Last night I watched a documentary on Amazon Prime, The Many Lovers of Jane Austen, which covered the growth of Austen fans since her death, focusing on a Texas conference of the American Jane Austen Society, with everyone dressed in Regency costumes. Several historians and literary critics were interviewed as well. I really enjoyed it. The beginnings of interest in Austen began in the 1840s, following the growth of rail service in England and the WH Smith train station bookstores selling inexpensive copies of her novels after the expiration of copyright.
