DR MattH - Glad to hear you enjoyed Hairspray.  That company starts at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday.

They really did a nice job with the touring production.  From what I could when I saw it in LA, they really didn't make that many changes to the physical production from the original Broadway version.  I think the only thing I noticed that was missing, was the walkway around the orchestra pit.  -I know there's a technical term for that, but I can't think of what it is right now.  Anyone...??

If it weren't for "Being in Love" instead of "My White Knight," would THE MUSIC MAN rank as the most faithful film version of a Broadway musical ever? Even MY FAIR LADY added that extra verse to "You Did It," and the Rodgers and Hammerstein movies of their musicals always omitted numbers.

The section in "You Did It" was not added, it was always in the song.  I believe it was removed in tryouts when Rex Harrison screwed it up.  Perhaps Alan Lerner wanted it back and Mr Harrison was finally confident enough to perform it?

For those of you HHWers in NYC...

Are there any parades, festivals, sporting events this Friday or Saturday that I should be aware of?  -At least in regards to possible traffic tie-ups at the Lincoln Tunnel or GW Bridge?

And does anyone have plans for Saturday night?

In direct opposition to Ben's story, I am sloppy and disorganized because I grew up in a house that was more like a museum than a home. Nothing could be out of place - no footprints on the carpets, even - so now I just let things go in secret defiance against my mom and her obsession with cleanliness. Of course, the only person I'm really hurting is myself that way, but it gives me some sort of personal satisfaction. :D

Back from errands - bank, post office (DR TCB, watch for a package!), and grocery store.  I just made a batch of Peanut Crisp Bars, my version of Rice Krispy treats that are thin, sticky, and frosted with a penuche-type icing.  After sampling the icing, I need now to have a cup of black coffee to get rid of the sweetness.

When Richard and Rob return from school, I'll fix a nice dinner of baked tilapia, Spanish rice, green beans, sourdough bread, and, for dessert, Peanut Crisp Bars.

'til they get here, back to Six Feet Under, season 3.

DR Jane - to answer your question from yesterday about my opinion of Susan Vreeland's The Forest Lover, I can use the word of the day - LUGUBRIOUS.  I loved Girl in Hyacinth Blue (which I've read twice) and The Passion of Artemisia, but this latest one seemed forced and didn't really sing to me.  It did, however, make me want to visit British Columbia.

Have you, or any other DR's, heard from Danise since Hurricane Dennis went past her part of Florida?

Another option is to not latch the door.

:D

Well, yes, but the tape is for those all-too-likely memory lapses where we latch it out of habit!

I think that it was important for John Waters to keep HAIRSPRAY, even the musical version to which he contributed nothing but his own original idea/film/script, a bit subversive, even though it was at the time his most mainstream film. Keeping that character played by a male would keep it from being only another feel good musical comedy, though it certainly IS that in spades.

DR Ron, I am very, very content with the DVD of '1776' as it now stands. "Cool Men" is back where it should be and the beautiful beginning strains of "He Plays the Violin" are also there with Blythe Danner at her loveliest and most beguiling. I DO wish they had used all of "Piddle, Twiddle, and Resolve" but otherwise, it practically perfect in every way (a MARY POPPINS reference).

Speaking of MARY POPPINS, my friends went to see it while in London, and while they greatly enjoyed it, they were not bowled over by it. In fact, my friend's wife said she actually enjoyed CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (from their last trip over two years ago) more than MARY POPPINS.

So I'm guessing that Elmore casts his vote for MY FAIR LADY as the most faithful of all film versions of Broadway musicals. It even contained preview lyrics not heard after the show officially opened.

Thanks, I will pass on the book then.

I heard from Danise yesterday, early evening her time.  She said they are fine and the weather was settling down.  There had been problems with the power going in and out.

TCM is showing THE OPPOSITE SEX tonight at 6 p.m. I want to make a DVD of it since at the Warner chat, it was revealed that Warners is presently doing no DVD mastering on that title. Hopefully, the print Turner airs tonight will be a bit more colorful than the somewhat faded EastmanColor print used for the laserdisc.

Frances Langford, another name from the musical past, has passed away

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050711/ap_on_en_mu/obit_langford;_ylt=AsOlYZ3Fv3S0n7ZoFYPi77dI2ocA;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUl

That's bizarre because I watched my first Frances Langford movie this weekend, Career Girl.

She had the biggest hairdo in that movie.

Me, too!  In the edited version on the DVD, you can hear a little click where they cut the section, but on the complete laserdisc, it's aurally seamless.

Hi all!!!  We're back in the USA.  I'll get into more detail about the trip later, I promise.  We were in London on July 7, but we arrived after the initial explosions.  London was in havoc, needless to say and we had no clue what was going on until we stopped into a pub for lunch and watched the TV.  Then we got out soon after that.  As it turns out, the show (Mary Poppins) was cancelled that afternoon.  I did, however, get to Dress Circle.  Everything else, later - it's nice to be back!  :)

I upgraded my Windows Media Player, but it keeps saying I don't have a CD burner on my computer!!?? So, alas, I have not been able to burn any CDs.

Everytime I try to use my RecordNow software (which is what I normally used for making copies of CDs), it keeps trying to reinstall itself and then gets and error message....I know not why.

Oddly enough, when ever I try to run my AOL adware/spyware buster software it also causes RecordNow to start running a reinstall...I don't know...maybe there is a connection.

DR GEORGE - if your friend is familiar with Kabuki, ballet, or pantomime - the idea of a traditional role-sex reversal is common.

Peter Pan is almost always played by a woman/girl.
Stepsisters in Cinderella in ballet played by men.
All roles played by men in Kabuki theatre.

It's tradition!
That's true!

And that's a very good reason, too.

Thanks Jack and Matt! ;D
