The weekend was a Sweeney Todd festival. On Saturday afternoon I listened to the broadcast of the Theatre du Chatelet production with my friends Rodney Gilfry and Caroline O'Connor as Sweeney and Mrs Lovett. Yesterday I listened to the BBC broadcast of the 1993 National Theatre of Great Britain production, which was broadcast at the end of its run. Curiously, my friend Denis Quilley, who played Sweeney in the original 1980 London production, played the role again in the broadcast, although during the run at the National Theatre he played Judge Turpin.
It was very interesting to hear Jonathan Tunick's fantastic original orchestration played by 46 musicians in Paris one day and then to hear the small (9 musicians) orchestration he wrote for the 1993 production.
