I know that I mentioned I watched "Dune" the other day. I am a big fan of the Frank Herbert "Dune" books. I liked some of the first "Dune" (1984) film, and the made-for-TV version (2000) was quite spectacular but didn't light any fires of admiration. I respected it.
I was somewhat puzzled by the newer (2021) version's opening reviews and wondered if my low expectations had somehow been thwarted. It didn't help to learn that Hans Zimmer not only scored it but that it was a dream project for him. He was the prohibitive favorite to win the Oscar and did so. Well, I thought, maybe I'll love it, as well.
I can say this much: I loved the film and its performances by a very talented cast. The director captured the very essence of Herbert's first novel, but I was a bit put out that it was "Part 1". That said, they did Herbert's story up very well, and did not skimp on anything.
As for the score: I am not a fan of Hans Zimmer. In truth, I think his score served the film very nicely but not memorably. Then again, it may not be necessary to remember the music if it did, indeed, serves the film. I am on the fence over that, but I will say that I thought his music "good". From me, re: Zimmer, that is a gush.
