Starting a movie new to me, The Grass Is Greener. Cary Grant, Deborah Kerr, Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons. Stanley Donen directing. Songs by Noel Coward. Can’t wait to hear Mitchum sing Coward.

The Grass Is Greener is dull. No wonder I had never heard of it.

Got Ann-Margaret’s new album from the library today. She sings Bye Bye Love with Pete Townshend, Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You with Cliff Richard, Teach Me Tonight with Pat Boone, Splish Splash with Mickey Gilley and Linda Gail Lewis (Jerry Lee’s sister)

And sadly, Robert Mitchum didn’t sing.

And sadly, Robert Mitchum didn’t sing.

But the title was apt, was it not!   The grass is definitely greener in other film choices.

I watched two things on Max today:

First, I watched the "Friends Reunion" show that was aired on HBO. I had never seen it, and I was curious.

It was a lot of fun, except for the cloying James Corden segments.

And after that, I treated myself to my first viewing of "The Batman".  Thumbs up on this one for two main reasons:  Robert Pattinson's Batman/Bruce Wayne and Michael Giacchino's score.  I thought everyone did very well, although it was very dark and the opening 10 minutes or so almost had me reaching for my remote.  I am glad I stuck with it.

I know that I mentioned I watched "Dune" the other day.  I am a big fan of the Frank Herbert "Dune" books.  I liked some of the first "Dune" (1984) film, and the made-for-TV version (2000) was quite spectacular but didn't light any fires of admiration.  I respected it.

I was somewhat puzzled by the newer (2021) version's opening reviews and wondered if my low expectations had somehow been thwarted.  It didn't help to learn that Hans Zimmer not only scored it but that it was a dream project for him.  He was the prohibitive favorite to win the Oscar and did so.   Well, I thought, maybe I'll love it, as well.

I can say this much:  I loved the film and its performances by a very talented cast.  The director captured the very essence of Herbert's first novel, but I was a bit put out that it was "Part 1".  That said, they did Herbert's story up very well, and did not skimp on anything.

As for the score:  I am not a fan of Hans Zimmer.  In truth, I think his score served the film very nicely but not memorably.  Then again, it may not be necessary to remember the music if it did, indeed, serves the film.  I am on the fence over that, but I will say that I thought his music "good".  From me, re: Zimmer, that is a gush.

We took a ferry from the other side of Vancouver to a place called Bowen Island to visit with Mrs R’s brother. A pleasant day.

Hi Ron.
I don’t know the work of Zimmer enough to have an opinion worth a damn.

Hi Ron.
I don’t know the work of Zimmer enough to have an opinion worth a damn.

Next to John Williams, and possibly despite John Williams, Zimmer is the most sought-after composer over the past 15 years.

I love only one Zimmer score, and that score was for a film called "Interstellar".

You may recall he scored "Gladiator".

And now, I must return to those thrilling days of yesteryear and write more pages. I did six or seven before I left, but also did a lot of adding to what I'd done the day before. My goal today was to do fourteen pages, but I'll have done that if I write five more.
