NOTES IN A TRICE
« on: November 18, 2003, 12:15:17 AM »

Okay, you people, you know what you have to do.  You've read the notes, so go to it.  Even though we had a fine number of posts yesterday it was down from what we've been doing (actually, posts were down on every website I looked at - weird), so let's just make up for it today with frenzied posting.  That's what we need - frenzied posting.

Because I HAVE read the notes, I'll start:

Now I know what people mean - yesterday I had twenty-five karmas, today I have twenty-four.  I shall now pout in the corner until someone rectifies their horrid mistake.

Thanks to all the Dear Readers for 20 months or so of wonderful smiles. If I listed all the posts and posters that had made me smile it would indeed be an epic. I have no need of (and let's face it probably can't even do) the cartoon smiley faces but I know so many of you enjoy them. Have fun.
Mr Simon's work: Love "The Goodbye Girl" a perfect film. I can see why the musical did not work yet I find much to enjoy in both Cd versions. I also love the Dame Maggie Smith segment of "California Suite".(the rest I can do without). My least favourite film of Mr Simon's work was "The Out-Of-Towners".

I will have to do some studying on the smilies before I post one.  ;D

Mr Neil Simon....

My favorite plays have been mentioned but will be mentioned again:

The Odd Couple and Barefoot in the Park.  I would also like to add The Prisoner of Second Avenue, which I have done and which is very good.

As movies:  The Goodbye Girl, The Odd Couple, Barefoot in the Park, Murder by Death (I think he wrote that), and California Suite.

I'm on the fly once again but want to say Good Morning and have a good day.

I don't have time to look for many smiles right now but this one is my favorite--I don't know why but iI like it the best.

And of even if she isn't a smile, I love the karma fairy.

Be happy and safe!

I have to agree with Tom that The Visitors From London (California Suite) is perhaps the finest bit of overall writing that Neil Simon had ever done. With the exception of his Brighton Beach Trilogy The Visitors From London are the only other characters (I believe) that he revisited in another play. Sir Michael Caine and Dame Maggie Smith were brilliant together in the film version.

I also enjoyed the film adaptation of The Sunshine Boys (never saw it on stage) and if memory serves me After the Fox with Peter Sellers was a very funny film.

The other films that I've seen (originals written for the screen) which were spoofs (which are always hits and misses with the jokes) The Cheap Detective and Murder By Death were not bad. Peter Falk was sublime in both.

Although I enjoyed The Goodbye Girl,  and the Richard II set piece is perhaps the funniest thing he ever wrote, the film is not a favorite of mine as I never really saw the characters as real. The seemed to me just spouting out Neil Simon dialogue.

And I don't know why but they are doing a tv remake of the film next year

I don't know anything about this company, but I got an email for an import version of Song of the South that some DR might be interested in.  Here is a link to the site.

Sweet Charity is my favorite Simon.  It never fails to move me.  While I think Lost In Yonkers deserved the Pulitzer Prize, I found the BB trio of plays about Eugene Jerome rather forced, for the most part.

When I was growing up, Simon got no respect.  He was seen as a spouter of one-liners.  Now, comedy writers revere him.

His first volume of autobiography (Rewrites) is a book very dear to DW Joy and I.  And thereby hangs a tail...

But I must leave it hanging.  Have to get to work.

Well, I am about to feel like Jed who said never go away for 4 days. I'm about to go to Cleveland for business and I will miss the sparkling chatter and come back to find a plethora of posts. Friday will be my return date and I look forward to trying to catch up with all posts. Work was why I missed chat last night. I'm too dedicated for my own good.

I will eschew (gazoontite) the smileys today since I have to get crackin' on rehearsin' my presentations for Cleveland but I will mention some Neil Simon that I like.

I'm a big fan of The Good Doctor, his take on Checkov short stories and plays. I also like the movie version of Gingerbread Lady, Only When I Laugh. Like BK, I also enjoy the book for Promises, Promises (which was the very first Broadway show I ever saw in April of 1971 at the Shubert Theatre with Tony Roberts playing the lead). I do think that Lost in Yonkers is a wonderful piece. Biloxi Blues didn't click for me but Brighton Beach Memoirs is one of my favorites.

That's it for now. I'll try to post at least once more before AirTran whisks me away to Akron with connections to Cleveland.

Oh, I'm so close to 350, I have to do this.

Anyway, I also agree w/DR Noel. Sweet Charity is great Simon. What a combo, Neil Simon and Gwen Verdon. Wish I could have seen the original, but I was just a tyke back then.

Michael, I like the band. Cute smileys.

Who will win this contest? Only time will tell.

I am now officially off until further notice.

Send vibes for my work in Cleveland. Thanks all.

I also have no idea how to post a smiley face on this here site (except in chat).  I don't think I can even <B>bold</B>, __underline__ or <I>italic</I> like I could on the old board.  Is any of this explained on the Technical Posts board?

I like Neil Simon's original book for LITTLE ME.  It's probably closest to the Dennis (Tanner) book on which it is based.  I've always felt that Simon writes great dialogue in mediocre plots.  That said, I already have tickets to his next show but not because it is Simon.  It stars Mary Tyler Moore, John Cullum and David Aaron Baker and I would see that cast in just about anything.

I see I am no longer considered a "newbie"... how ironic since I have been reading and posting since Day 1 over two years ago.

BK - Are we still getting a lot of interlopers reading this here site but who aren't registered to post?

Good morning esteemed and Grand Poobah....and all the lovely and erudite dear readers --

I have to have an early start today, so I wanted to answer the Q.O.T.D. (after of course reading the notes).

My 3 favorite Neil Simon scripts are:  the Brighton Beach Trilogy,  California Suite (mainly Maggie Smith), and, yes, The Sunshine Boys.  Problem is, after 30 years it is sometimes hard for Kerry and I to figure out which one is Willy and which one is Al....of us, that is.

This is my only smiley....sorry.   8)

Let's wish a big HHW Happy Birthday today to Mickey and Minnie Mouse who are 75 years old but don't look a day older than when they first appeared on the big screen on 11/18/28.  Lots of cheese for them please.

It's unfortunate that yesterday, on the eve of their birthday, it was announced that the latest wave of Disney Treasures DVDs (including Part 2 of "Mickey Mouse in Color" along with a Donald Duck anthology, Disney in Space and Disney at War) have been delayed from December until May.

WEL: It is so much easier to bold italics and underline on this here board - all you have to do is hit "reply" (not quick reply) - there you will see a whole series of easy to use icons, just like in Word.  So simply highlight the word you wish to bold, for example, click on the "B" and it will insert the tags automatically.  Same thing with the "I" for italics and the "U" for underscore.  There are also a host of smilies for your mental delectation right under all the icons.  Click on any one of them and they will appear in your post.
