OOH!  OOH!

Guilty Pleasure!

I've been watching "Battle of the Network Reality Stars" on BRAVO!

Such fun.

Such laughs.

Such absurdities.

My favorite "reality star" to hate on the show is Mike Boogie, who is more pathetic here than he was when on Big Brother 2.

DR Vixmom, I received the CD that you sent me.  Thanks!  I'm listening to it here at work.  I was going to send you a PM, but I got the message:  Error: The recipient does not have any room left in their inbox. Try sending the message later.  So, I'm letting you know here.  Again, thanks! ;D

DR RonP, I do think it would be funny to see the Big Brother cast on Survivor.

I am also really looking forward to the newest Survivor. And I want to know what these "surprises" are. Although i think i will be very careful of reading spoilers this year. Cause to me, they usually have too much info, and if i know how everything will play out, it gets sort of boring (like in all stars, i had read everything).

DR Michael S I hope you feel better.

I became too thoroughly entrenched in TCM during the last year to get involved with any TV series.  Aside from EVERYBODY LOVE RAYMOND, SCRUBS and the one arc of THE AMAZING RACE, I didn't watch anything on network TV.  And nothing that's due this fall has captured me thus far, based on the preview commercials.

The Richard Altman making of Fiddler on the Roof book is sort of the granddad of these, and is still one of the most thorough and one of the best.  Also, there's a wonderful book on the making of Any Wednesday, by its author Muriel Resnick.  I got lots of details for Writer's Block from both books.

Dear Friend BK, there's one before the Altman FIDDLER book:  BUT HE DOESN'T KNOW THE TERRITORY by Meredith Willson about the making of THE MUSIC MAN, one of my favorites.

LOL.   We've often wanted something like Survivor:  Harlem, where a bunch of uptight rich white people are plopped down in the inner city (I know Harlem is gentrified now, but you get my drift).

There was something on yesterday's posts I needed to respond to.  Back in a mo.

Well, after watching all the moronic parents and their obnoxious selfish offspring on the Upper West Side, I'm looking forward to Angie Harmon's new show INCONCEIVABLE as much as I look forward to a hernia.  I want to see a series called ABORT!!

I've read and thoroughly enjoyed the books "Not Since Carrie" and "Sondheim & Co."  Another theater book (but not Broadway) that I read and loved was Beverly Sills' autobiography, called "Beverly : An Autobiography."  Reading it was like you were just sitting there in front of her having a chat about her life.  Quite entertaining!

I think I'll have to track this one down and give it a read.  I quite enjoyed the (or one of the) making of A CHORUS LINE, and found the one for THE FANTASTICKS enjoyable, too.

And speaking of the Topic of the Day, I just read on Playbill.com, "Ethel Merman: The Biggest Star on Broadway" to Hit Stores in September.

According to the article, The new biography of the late Broadway star offers an "in-depth portrait [which] details her career, marriages, affairs and her children. It includes a complete glossary of all of Merman's appearances."

I heard something so upsetting on CNN re: Katrina.  They were saying that a lot of people had to leave their pets behind.  I can't even imagine having to do that.

Evacuating with a pet is made more difficult because neither emergency shelters nor public transportation welcome pets.

The Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana has set up an emrgency shelter:

Quote
Our shelter for pets evacuated due to Hurricane Katrina is up and running at Louisiana State University in Shreveport. We are located in large tents in the grassy quadrangle adjacent to the Red Cross shelter. We are still accepting evacuated pets, and as always we need donations of money or supplies.

There is a very special group, NOAH"S WISH was is set up strictly for disater assistance to pets:

Quote
Noah's Wish is a not-for-profit, animal welfare organization, with a straightforward mission.  We exist to keep animals alive during disasters.  That's it.

We are not involved in any other animal welfare issues.   It's not that we are not concerned about all the ways animals are abused and exploited.  Noah's Wish would like nothing more than to see all suffering stop.  Fortunately, there are a multitude of national and local animal welfare organizations who are tackling the issues that adversely affect animals.  No other organization has made the commitment though to just focus on disaster relief work for animals.  That's the void we are filling.

Noah's Wish came into existence in March 2002, not to duplicate existing efforts to help animals during earthquakes, fires, floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes, but rather to expand on what's already in place.  Too often, efforts to help animals during these life threatening situations have been gravely inadequate.  It would be unacceptable if relief efforts for people were as fragmented.

Noah's Wish recognizes that animals need and deserve an organized, consistent, and professionally managed national disaster relief program.  Otherwise, they will continue to pay for human indifference with their lives.   What will raise the standards for how animals are managed during disasters is to implement well thought out, field tested, policies and procedures that are practiced in all disasters.  Relief efforts for people are managed this way and we feel they should be for animals too.

Noah's Wish Katrina update:

Quote
Noah's Wish has been extremely busy today responding to a variety of phone calls and e-mails, in addition to gearing up to send our initial team to Louisiana.  This team will be traveling tomorrow, followed by additional volunteers from all different parts of the United States and Canada.   We expect to have a team of at least 100 people in Louisiana by Friday to respond to the needs of the animals affected by Hurricane Katrina.  More of our trained Volunteers will follow to provided additional support.

If you are so inclined, you can information about how to help at Help Noah!

I never realized how truly dreadful the 2004-05 TV season was until they began re-runs.

ENOUGH already.

Let's just "call the hour of death" and move on.

Well, it wasn't all bad!

I enjoyed: House, Medium, Veronica Mars, and The Closer.

Watching CNN is very upsetting today, I actually started crying.  They have incredible footage of rescues being performed.  There are many people on roofs waving/screaming for help.  They are also talking about all the people in need of medical attention.

It looks like in some parts of NO that the water is almost to the rooftop level.

What a Way to Go!

Mr Dick Van Dyke owned Hopper's Dept Store and became a busy, busy mogul, much to wife Shirley MacClaine's displeasure.  His favorite phrase was "A little hard work never killed anybody" which he said many times - most memorably just before....he....dropped...dead!   ;D

NOT SINCE CARRIE - oh my!
ALL HIS JAZZ - a Bob Fosse bio
THE ABOMINABLE SHOWMAN - David Merrick bio

Books I don't think have been mentioned:
THE GIRL WHO FELL DOWN - a bio of Joan McCracken

DAZZLER - biography of Hart
THE GIFT HORSE - Hildegarde Knef's account of the creation of Silk Stockings is priceless
OPENING NIGHTS ON BROADWAY Volume One & Two - Excerpts from reviews of musicals.

And so many more that occupy my shelves!

I read that the French Quarter came through Katrina very well. There's a tiny bit of solace in that, I suppose.

Unfortuately, that good news has been overtaken by current events. New Orleans, as a city, is closed for ocupancy. A general evaucation order is in place, the levees have been breached, the water is still rising, the drinking water supply has been contaminated, there is no electricty, schools are expected to not open until November, major egresses are impasassable. We are looking at weeks, if not months, before people can return to the city.
