My mom was a Holocaust refugee who came over on a boat at about eight years old, but her parents and sister were not able to get on the boat.  Just as my Dad wanted every detail of his experience with the Nazis known, Mom preferred not to talk about it.

My mom chose to go with the feeling that, as far as her life in America was concerned , the family (by birth, her aunt and uncle) that took her in and accepted her as their daughter, whose son (by birth, her first cousin) accepted her as his sister - were her parents and brother.  And their families always treated us as Mom being their daughter and sister, respectively.

Your mother was very fortunate to have a loving family.  Was she on the boat with them?

The relatives that she joined were already in the U.S.

Who supervised her on the ship?

Freddie, thank you for sharing your father's memoirs.

Have you or your family tried contacting the US Holocaust Memorial Museum about it? They have memoirs from one of my 2nd cousins once removed who survived the Holocaust by passing as a Catholic girl, and another relative who survived the camps.

By coincidence, I had contact with a researcher at USHMM whose father was in my Dad's army battalion! I wanted to look him up when I visited Washington DC last year, but sadly he had died a few years before.

My father met a cousin in France who survived after being adopted by a family.  I never got her name.  I only know she was an actress.  At the time he thought she was the only survivor until we found family in Israel, but sadly too late for my father to communicate with his cousin.

I'm up, I'm up - nine hours of good sleep with very weird dreams, one of which was doing a book signing in New York in a store I never heard of on the upper west side, although no one seemed to know WHERE on the upper west side and when I looked at the street signs it said 17th and Third. For some reason I'd just settled into a hotel and gone there, but no one knew about it - elmore was the only one there and I asked him to call everyone we knew but he held out his flip phone and said it had died. I do think some people showed up at noon.

That's a good idea.  I'll check if there's a way on their site to send it to them to put online.  Thanks!

Mom preferred not to talk about any of the details of this. I'm sure for my Mom, there was a real element of survivor's guilt that she got to escape but her sister and parents didn't.

Towards the last years, Dad was very open about every aspect of his life, but Mom stayed as evasive as she did, in part because she was so young when she got here.

Mom and Dad were shocked when they realized (it was around spring 2013) that the money they'd built up, expecting to make life easier for the next generation, had caused the family to be ripped apart by the greed of our family's version of the Macbeths.

Maybe he's acting out walking to the privy in the rain and is worried about wetting his feet?

This morning I listened to Hedre We Are, the last Sondheim show. Jonathan Tunick had sorta warned me it might be a hard go, and maybe because of that warning, I was surprised that I didn't think so. I just kept thinking I wish I liked it more. Now I'm curious to see the two Bunuel movies.

I also listened to Evening Primrose, which I love, and Stages/Together Again, two Kimmel shows I also love. The CD happily arrived in yesterday's mail and made my morning.

Leaving shortly for a choral concert at the Episcopal cathedral in Minneapolis. The concert is later, but we are going to dinner beforehand at a restaurant in the Walker Art Museum, which is nearby.

I must listen to those two Kimmels, too! All of that Kritzer stuff is in a neat stack on the table in the Music Room, waiting for me. I had meant to do it while reading the last two books, and the listening got away from me.

I'm glad to hear that about the score to Here We Are, and I'm sorry I let the world premiere get away from me.

But I'm surprised that DR Elmore hasn't seen the two movies. (Did I understand that right?) I'm more familiar with the second, and I will take them both out again soon. But these are classics with a capital C, and you know what that rhymes with.
