CELL PHONE COLD TURKEY LURKEY DAY

Well, you've read the notes, you know that we must get our cell phones off our backs, and now it is time for you to post until the cold turkey cows come home - they're all abstaining from using their cow phones for eight hours.

I am so sorry to hear about Derek. I just have no other words. Someday, Tom, I'd like to hear the story of how you two met.

The office phone is a cell phone, so I'm afraid I'll have to answer it. But I shan't talk longer than necessary.

Oh, my. I am so sad to hear about Derek. Even though we never met him, I think we all felt as if we knew him in some way. His funny and charming style will be missed.

I won't be around much this weekend. I have a half day at work. At 11:30 I'm leaving for Penn Station to go to Long Island for a relaxing Labor Day weekend. I will miss the extemporaneous chat but I will catch up (ketchup) on all posts on Monday, September 5 when we return to the city.

We will most likely finish up with Six Feet Under. We don't have HBO in the city but Ant's mother has taped all the current episodes. We had a marathon viewing in July when Anthony came back from Virginia and we will finish the viewing this weekend. We may also watch the film version of Forum. We listened to the soundtrack recently. I have it only because it's a Sondheim soundtrack. I find it to be dreadful. Anthony has never seen the movie and his library has a copy. We shall try to soldier through this bad stage to screen transfer. Hmmm, considering my comments about The Fantasticks earlier this week, I'm entering curmudgeon territory again.

I'll probably pop in once or twice before I leave.

I love all you people out there in the dark. We will raise a toast to Derek on October 5th at our grand HHW dinner.

I was so sorry to hear about Derek.  I've only been posting here for a short time, but I'd lurked on and off prior to that and feel like I'd come to know him.

I have no cell phone and we have no plans to get one. I saw how they DIDN'T come in so handily during the blackout 2 years ago. We have a land line and an old fashioned phone so we were able to make a receive calls without problem. Many people with cell phones found out how long the batteries lasted during the blackout. I live in a neighborhood that was one of the last to recover power so we were out for longer than most. People with cell phones and portable phones were without service for much of the time. I know that they can certainly be convienent and I've even called my friends on their cell phones to finalize plans, etc. but as BK said, we got along just fine without them for eons.

I don't understand the need to be connected every minute of your waking day. I appreciate the technology and realize the benefits but come on. Whatever happened to books or plain face to face conversation or taking a walk with a friend (leaving your cell phone at home). Those of us who haven't joined the cell phone revolution are now deigned by many to be curmudgeons because we don't want to stand in an elevator and hear about weekend plans. Or WE are told to lower our voices because WE are intruding on a phone conversation in a PUBLIC PLACE!!! I have to stop now or my rant will go on and on.

It is 8:01 and I am off to work.

As to cell phones, I don't normally use mine except when I go out of the city, and this morning I have to attend a bris outside of the city.  But I haven't used the cell phone in weeks except to check messages, so I hope I deserve a pass on today's cell phone ban.

Happy birthday to Ron P.

Without your encouragement and example, I might never have made the push to become a Senior Member by the end of August, and I thank you for that.

I haven't been as errant and truant as I've appeared.  For some reaon, I was having trouble getting to the posts.  I was able to read the notes, but the rest would not download properly.  :P

So a belated happy Birthday to Hisaka.
Happy Birthday to Bruce Moss in New Zealand.
Happy Birthday to Ron Pulliam.

I am sad to hear of Derek's passing.  That was a lovely tribute, Hisaka.   I thank you, Bruce, for letting us know.

I'm sending good vibes to everyone here at HHW and to Russ who is stuck in New Orleans after some business trip and is now running out of insulin and heart medication. I hope my friend Don is doing well and got out of the City.

It's nice that the computer gods let me back in.

I am very sad to hear that DR OzDerek is gone.  With his recent appearances I was hoping that his health was improving some.

He was a truly wonderful, loving and loony guy.

Dear Tomovoz  My deepest condolences on the passing of Derek.  I too feel that I have lost a friend.  He shall be sorely missed on this boeard.  Is there a charity or service or fund that he would like to have contributions made to in his honor?

Please tell his sister that his passinghas been felt worldwide.

Happy B'Day, Ron!

This weekend I shall be sharing some fine old Westerns with a couple of fine old friends, Ride the High Country and Ride Lonesome.

The Lovely Wife and I are listening to Light the Piazza.  Not my sort of thing though she's loving it.  I need to find a CD of a country group called Nickel Creek...saw a video of theirs the other day.  Wow!

I was E&T yesterday, and have to dash off to work without reading the posts, but from the above I sense I'll be feeling sad for most of the day.

And also privileged to have met OzDerek over the 'net.

I think Derek's wish would be that we all register as organ donors. He was given the gift of four extra years of life. I spoke to Derek's sister Maureen this evening. I've not met his other siblings - Judith and Jamie. I will be sure to pass on the feelings of the DRs here and to let the family know how Derek appreciated the goodness and support he found from this worldwide network of friends.
