Best birthday wishes to DR Ron Pulliam, who is enjoying a 4-day weekend!

Friday media report:  CD (car) - I'm well into the audio version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.  Jim Dale continues to astonish me with his talent for creating unique and identifiable voices for all those characters and for his consistency throughout 6 books.  He has even captured, in a flashback, the youthful incarnation of a beloved elderly character.

DVD - DS Rob and I will continue Deadwood, Season 1.

VCR - ?

I did finally get around to this week's RENO 911! last night, and DR George was right; hilarious as usual. I really love the gay rollerblader Terry. He's always a hoot!

Re: last night's Big Brother.

I was happy that Howie won. And happy not to have to watch another Q&A comp.  I was a bit surprised that Howie nominated beau and ivette since i thought it would be maggie/ivette. I don't really get the need to get out the pairs.  I mean if they are going to win, why not give them $1Million.

I was disgusted by Jennifer's behavior. Really dislike her even more than before (which is saying a lot).

One interesting thing they showed (that i did not know) was that james had made up the whole pinky swear thing (he told ivette that janelle had pinky swore that she would vote for him).  When he said this on the live feeds, we were not given his diary room comments (saying he made it up).   So now ivette/april/mag believe it is true and they are going to try to convinve howie that janelle was going to vote against him. I hope he doesn't believe it (and i don't think he will) but it was interesting.

And it looks like weather-wise, we're in for a glorious (if hot) weekend. At least the nights are cool.

I got to the part of Wakefield Poole's autobiography where he talks about being in the company of TENDERLOIN. He was NOT impressed with Mr. George Abbott.

The book is very simply written. He is not one to try to get fancy with his writing; reminds me a lot of Jerry Herman's autobiography SHOWTUNE.

But I'm reading about some famous folks and seeing another side of them. Very interesting reading.

So sad to hear about Derek.  I will miss him.

Happy Birthday, Ron.

And, on a hopefully lighter note:

There, now I feel better.  (If you carefully read today's notes, you'll figure it out).

I have been super busy lately preparing my house for our remodel and getting ready for the long trip.  I must admit not minding these activities have given me little time to follow the sad news in New Orleans & elsewhere in the world, preventing me from becoming emotionally involved.  Yet this morning sad news hit me like a rock.

It is amazing to briefly know someone only through the internet, and to feel as I do now because they were taken from this world. I am deeply pained to learn Derek has left us.  He was obviously a very special person and I feel my life is richer for having known him.

Good Morning!

So sad to hear about the passing of DR ozderek.  Thank You DR Tomovoz for keeping us up to date on his condition and his activities, and for passing on our Vibes to him.

As for cellphones...

Yes, I use one.  And, yes, there are times when I find myself just using it for the sake of using it.  BUT at least I know I'm doing that.  Otherwise, it's mainly my "business" line.  It's "helped" me to get gigs - especially those "last minute" deals where someone is calling down a list of people to see who can come in "NOW".

In Memoriam correction:  I'm catching up with posts from the past few days.  BK, there (sadly) was one more death you forgot:  occasional poster (and other Portlander) Dennis Clancy (ILuvNY), who passed a year or so ago (maybe longer, it's hard to remember, though I know I mentioned it here when I found out).  Dennis, like Derek, was a very sweet and wickedly funny man.  Longtimers here will hopefully remember him.

As for New York real estate...

I've been noticing a bunch of closed store fronts in midtown lately during my walks.  Who knew that that electronics store that was advertising "Closing Soon" was really closing?  And I noticed that the Manhattan Chili Co. off of Times Square has shuttered.  And a little further down the island, The Big Cup in Chelsea has closed.  -And it's not like that place was not doing any business.  Apparently, the rent on that building has tripled over the past couple of years, and I'm pretty sure making the rent by primarily selling lattes and iced coffees to the bois was next to impossible.

My new recliner has arrived, so I guess I need to do some furniture rearranging. It will be nice to have a decent chair now to zombie out in front of the TV.

The gasoline situation is no better and promises to get worse over the weekend and into next week. We're being told don't use the car unless you have to. Lots of gas stations have only the highest (most expensive) grade of gas left at their pumps.

And back to cellphones for a sec...

Well, if I had not picked up my cell phone this morning - and I happened to be receiving a call from a cell phone - I would not have been able to have been offered and to accept(!) an amazing job!  Let's just say my Spring is now set, and that it will be spent here in New York City in the pit of a Broadway show!

Needless to say, I am VERY happy right now.

DRStuart, is it possible that you, too, are thinking about a trek to the City in October?  That would be fantastic!

Now, about October:  call me Gladhand, but I have the feeling I'm turning into the social director for the week.  If you are 80-100% certain you will be in the City the week of Oct 1, would you please PM me with your plans beyond the Food Tour avec M Josespiano?  I would like to get some sort of blueprint laid out so that folk can plan visits, sightseeing, theatre, tete-a-tetes, assignations, rendezvous, etc.   Phone numbers and places you are all staying might be helpful as well.

Oy!
