While my nephew was at his house he helped put out two fires.  It is scary and this fire is 0 percent contained.

Keith reminded me of the time he was on the cross trainer at the Ashland Y and saw a fire near the area I was hiking.  Worried he called to see if I was ok and then told me to get out of there.  Fortunately I was almost at the end of the trail.  When I emerged was the wooded trail I was shocked to see a major fire across the road from my car.

It also explained why I didn't pass any hikers heading into the trail.

The somewhat quiet street was busy with people rushing to their homes.

I called friends to see if they needed to come to our house.  They were already on their way to her brother's home.

For Hurricane Irma, my Mom (then 89) and Dad (then 97) were in a shelter at a nearby school, North Miami Beach High - and they were interviewed about it in the Financial Times, at the beginning of the article, then the end of the article.

(I think this link should work.)
"In face of Irma Floridians prepare for familiar foe
Locals are stoic but braced for the worst as hurricane approaches US mainland"
https://www.ft.com/content/afdb89be-946d-11e7-a9e6-11d2f0ebb7f0

From the article:

"Naftali Landau was hoping to celebrate his 97th birthday on Thursday with his 89-year-old wife Rosalie at their home in North Miami Beach. But with hurricane Irma expected to hit southern Florida this weekend, the holocaust survivor was grateful just to find a safe spot at a high school shelter.

“We could have stayed home but here we get a lot of assistance,” says Mr Landau, who moved to the US in 1949 after being tortured by the Nazis in Poland during the second world war. “We don’t have to worry about running out of water or electricity.”

Then at the end of the article:

"At North Miami Beach High, as more and more people made their way to the improvised front desk, Denise Woncisz, a Red Cross volunteer, had some good news for Mr Landau: “I’ve found you two cots.”

That was a nice article about your parents.

Thank you, Jane.

Or possibly find out your father was a holocaust survivor.

That's another possibility.

Or maybe even that he was 97.

Anita Bryant has died, according to a story dated today. I thought she had died long ago.

TOD:

I was in San Diego when the Laguna Canyon Fire broke out in 1993 and devastated areas including Malibu.  I wasn't in it, per se, but we got smoke and ash as far south as San Diego.  My car was covered with ash one morning.

This past September, I survived Hurricane Helene which devastated much of Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee.  I, personally, suffered no more indignity than a power outage for three days.  Some didn't get power back for weeks, so rural are some of the folks in my county,

FEMA was font and center within hours and has done nothing but help, help, help.  This despite the evil one's lies.

Also, the evil one has spewed unconscionable lies about the current fire that devasted Pacific Palisades and other parts of the Los Angeles environs.  They are now worried about Mount Wilson as the fire is moving up that mountain.  There are major televison and telecommunications facilities there,

More for him than for me as I was ignorant of the fire. I was glad he warned me before I walked out of the trail.  Even with a warning it was shocking.  I was more hesitant than scared and quickly saw it was across the street vs in the little parking area.

Too often we have had to deal with smoke and ash making it difficult to breathe.

I have not read about Mount Wilson yet.

This has been a "week".

I had an appointment this week to begin a sleep study.  My first appointment was to get the device, instructions on how to use it and to return it the next day.

I had the dates of my appointments clear in my mind, but did not have the dates of each day in my mind.  I went early Tuesday only to learn my appointment was for Wednesday.  Ah...Tuesdays wasn't the 8th!!!  The rest of that day was a blur as I felt I was coming down with something, and I really needed sleep.

So, I returned yesterday morning, happily feeling much better, got a good briefing on how to use their device and came home.  Last night, I was all rigged out with a sensor just at my breastbrone, a sensor on my little finger, and a device strapped to my right wrist to collect all the data.  I was told I should tape all the cords and cables to my body so nothing would accidentally come loose.

I also could not use my CPAP since the purpose of the study was to determine whether I truly have sleep apnea.  It was one of the worst nights in a long time.  I woke up every two hours thinking I had slept through the night.  But, no.  I needed to wear everything for six hours.

Into bed at 11:15 p.m. and out of bed at 5:35 a.m.  I removed all the stuff, put it back on the container it came in, and then put myself back into bed with my CPAP where I finally got a good 3 1/2 hours of sleep.

Drove to Aiken SC for a third time in three days and turned the device in.  Afterward, it was off to Sam's Club for some much-needed New Year's shopping.

I anticipate the call to return for the results in a week or so.

I know your pain, Ron. Sleep tests are the worst. Here's hoping you get the treatment you need.

DR Ron I hope the tests show that you need your CPAP and can get a new, improved one to use.

I've never had to evacuate. If we had to do that for fire here, it would be even crazier than what's happening now in LA. But one I time I was singing the Verdi Requiem and just before the Rex Tremendae, we had an earthquake and you could see the chandeliers swaying overhead. Fortunately it was a small one so everyone kept right on going.

Thursday evening greetings!  We went out to eat today and then shopped in person at Kroger.  We are now hunkered down - again - in anticipation of more snow tomorrow into Saturday.  Ugh!

So, the guy whose picture of the fire that I posted last night also posted these...again, I don't know specifically where they were taken:

That is the Pacific Palisades Gelson's was destroyed in the fire.

Is BK anywhere near that??

Good for Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest for donating $1 Million for a fire relief fund.
