I've just returned from having a sweet breakfast at Krispy Kreme (the store near my house has tables and chairs both inside the shop and outside on a terrace. Very nice to have a couple of morning doughnuts and watch the world go by.

My houseguest and I both drove our cars there since the shop is right on his way out of town going back home.

We had a nice visit, and it was a pleasure having him. He's doing a show next month calling WALKING ACROSS EGYPT (I think) or something similar to that, so I'll probably be heading up his way the weekend before Thanksgiving to see him emote.

My goodness! I'm alone!  :'(

I must watch NIGHT STALKER from Thursday night which I haven't gotten to yet, and then I'll have to make a DVD decision. Have no idea at this point what it will be.

And this week, the new large magazine version of TV GUIDE premieres. I am eager to see what changes this larger size will bring with it.

My subscription still has about 10 months to run, so its renewal will depend on whether I like what I see with this upcoming new format.

I have those KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER TV episodes I could watch, but I really feel like I want to see a movie.

I've got it: THE BAREFOOT CONTESSA.

Good Morning! Good Morning!

I'm up!  I'm up!

I'm cleaning!  I'm cleaning!

-Well, I'm not cleaning right now, but I do have a load of laundry in the dryer, and I cleaned the bathroom - mainly to clean up the mess from last night's drip, drip, drip.  The initial drips were full of soot, so I am thinking it is a leak from the roof since after a while the water was dripping clear.  Hmm...  No call back from the landlord yet.  Hmm...

Next up:  The floors.

Hello and goodbye! I'm off to a small town near here for a surprise birthday party. A friend rented an old renovated movie theater to show her boyfriend's favorite movie, Blazing Saddles, should be an interesting afternoon.

...I had no memory of that Angela Lansbury performance of "Everything's Coming Up Roses." Obviously done the year she won the Tony for GYPSY, she was in great voice (though she was lip-synching)....
Any clue as to the recording she was lip-synching to?  The LCR, perhaps, or some other recording?

Obviously, she wouldn't be synching to the Merman recording!   :o

Topic of the Day:

Elementary School - I did rather well in all subjects.  However, that seemed to change once I got to...

High School: My favorite subject was Band/Music/Choir (naturally), but I also liked my sophomore year Sociology (Fr. Luis Valdivieso) and English (Mr. Johnson) classes, and my Junior year Government (Sr. Maureen Christopher) class.  Oh, and my two years of French (Mme. Pereira and Mrs. Edmonson).

However, Physics and AP History (there was just way too much reading to do - and I was taking AP English at the same time) did me in.  -In fact, and I'm surprised I'm willing to admit this publicly, I failed AP History.  BUT, I did get an "A" when I made up the class during summer school.  So there!

College:  Again, I loved my music classes - with the possible exception of the Music History component of the core curriculum - the teacher was just sooooo dry and uninvolved - there was too much emphasis on memorizing dates and places, rather than concepts and ideas.  We truly just had to read the book (the classic Grout and Palisca), and show up and take the tests to pass the class.

My favorite class was Song Literature (Melanie Kohn-Day).  A truly wonderful class - a great teacher, a great curriculum, and it was interactive.  The class was geared toward Vocal Performance majors, and they would learn three or four songs each semester as "live" examples of what we were studying.  Since I was a pianist, Melanie coached me as a pianist - playing for my classmates every now and then.  However, there were a few times when I would also get to sing in the class.  I think I still remember Ives' "Ann Street".  And I also had one of those racy Campion songs - I remember not being able to keep a straight face while singing the refrain, "Cherry ripe."

:)

Alas, the bane of my college academic career was Calculus.  -Well, I had tested into that level Math class, so... And, heck, I just needed one math class to fulfill that requirement.  Well...  After two dubious attempts to complete and pass the class, I finally "regressed" and took the College Algebra class.  It was a lab, which meant that you could basically take the class at your own pace.  So... After getting the basic formulas back in my head, I finished the class in about three weeks!

Lesson learned:  Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

;)

Oh, and there was also a required Large Ensemble (choir, band, etc.) component.  I liked singing in the choir, but the extra time involved for rehearsals and the concerts really got to be a pain, especially towards the end of the Fall semesters with all the Christmas concerts (and final exams!).  So, since we were required to take five semesters of Large Ensembles, I took my final Choir "class" during summer session - four weeks, one concert. Easy peasy!

I once tried to row my boat ashore, but it sank before I could get there.
The whole song lyric is silly, if you ask me.  Boats row a lot easier when they're in the water.  Rowing your boat while it's still ashore just dings up the oars.

Worst subjects - math, science, geographpy.

Best - drama, choir, English

Topic of the Day:
Subjects I did well in and liked - English and Drama
Worst subject - Math. Enough said (although I did manage to squeak by with a C)

Mr. BK:
My favorite dessert--and one I eat in celebration of whatever--is a banana split. I use two bananas cut lengthwise down the middle and laid side by side in a special banana split dish, two scoops of Breyer's Checkerboard ice cream (vanilla and chocolate), some Hershey's chocolate sauce (from a can) drizzled on top, a mound of Cool Whip, more Hershey's, and some Maraschino cherries from a jar (I'm not nuts about nuts). Mmmmmm.....

OH!  And then there were the two semesters of French I took in college during summer session.  It turned into an immersion course.  Each semester was compressed into five weeks: five days a week, four hours a day.  I loved it!  There was simply no time for anything to leave the mind.  And Mssr. Beck was a great teacher.  He even taught us the cuss words!

DR Elmore, is it possible that "great" just means "large"?

It's possible; I'm large.

In the case of Mozart and Schubert, I don't think so, primarily because we're dealing with a classical orchestra of (usually) 8 winds, 4 horns, 2 trumpets. 2 trombones, timpani and strings, around 40 players, as opposed to a Wagnerian or late romantic orchestra of 12 winds, 4-8 horns, 2-4 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, 1-2 harps,  2-3 percussion, timpani, and strings.  I think Strauss' SALOME calls for 105 players!

I think the "Great" is a nomenclature from some 19th-Century critic like Hanslick.

Extra prize for worst subject: Gym

If people have two of the three Nudie connections in The Girl Most Likely To... I've already warned that the third will be near impossible and require a keen memory of one particular scene or, more likely, a VIEWING of that particular scene, and then you'll have to have a keen memory of one particular scene in Nudie to make the connection, and that will only happen if you're feeling particularly keen.

I was very lucky that there was no P.E. requirement in our school system when I went through school. I was in marching band, which might have substituted for it anyway (ROTC substituted for it in college), but I did not want to take any kind of gym class back then - way too skinny and underweight, would have felt humilated even in a t-shirt.

I wish this bug bite on my right arm would go away.  It doesn't itch today, but it's at the point where it's starting to spread out and dissapate.  So, when I glance at my arm, it sometimes looks like my bicep has started to shift.  Just an annoyance.

Mr. BK --
Les did forward the email to me but I was unavailable (I apologize for not responding). If Les didn't come, there was a good reason. I did, however, give Mr. Kimmel some ink in the Cabaret West Member Newsletter. Here it is verbatim:

BRUCE KIMMEL has just issued two of his musicals from the late '70s/early '80s on his new recording label called Kritzerland. Both musicals--Stages and Together Again--are available on one CD. Purchase it at www.kritzerland.com. Bruce, with over 103 albums to his credit, is one of the leading producers of theater music on CD. He created the critically acclaimed Lost in Boston and Unsung Musicals series, solo albums by many of today's theatre performers, as well as numerous off-Broadway and Broadway cast albums. Yesterday, der B and I spent my day off taking care of the grandlads.  The out-of-stepdaughter and her husband had a party to attend that night, so der B and I had plenty of time to corrupt the young minds.

We started with a ride up to the Borders in Newark, DE.  Nice thing about DE, there's no sales tax, which helped with the final bill.  While I found a couple of cooking-centric books (a bio of Careme and Best Food Writing 2005), der B took the lads to the children's section.  There's this whole series of books that Alex likes called "The Magic Treehouse," which operates like a TARDIS and whisks the kid heros to all sorts of places of historical interest.  William needed to be escorted to the boys room, and by the time he and der Grampa got back Alex had already picked out nearly a dozen books that he wanted.  What was interesting was that Alex had not picked out the stories themselves; he wanted the study guides that go with the stories, non-fiction for kids.  It's a direction der G's been wanting to take him, and the lad started in that direction all on his own.

(William, meanwhile, found one of the original Frog and Toad books, and was quite happy.)

Then we were off to the movies.  Alex was not interested in seeing Corpse Bride, declaring it "creepy" (but I think he picked that up from his mother, who habitually condemns all sorts of things from the scantest information).  Instead, we saw Wallace and Gromitt: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.  We all laughed ourselves silly.  This is not a kid's film - it's an everyone's film.

Finally, we had dinner at a pizza parlor.  We all took books with us, and the waitress was thrilled to see us all reading (I'd located a copy of Cinefex for der B).  And after eating, we headed back home, put the lads to bed (it was way past their bedtime), and waited for the OOS and her hubby to return.

All and all, a better day than I had expected.

And speaking of "annoyances"...

DR Jason mentioned that suspected date of the suspected terrorist attack is supposed to be tomorrow.  I've been trying to track down more news about it over the past couple of minutes, but most of the news sites are concentrating on the horrible earthquake - and subsequent death toll - in Pakistan (which is understandable), and the Yankees in the playoffs (which is only sort of understandable, but not really).  So...

DR SWW - After my own viewing of "Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride", I'd say you made a better choice with "Wallace and Gromit".   I suspect the grandlads would have gotten very restless during "Corpse Bride" - the pacing is just plain slow at times.

Worst subjects: Spanish (in Jr. High) and French (in High).  Just couldn't get the hang of them.

Best times in High School: with the Associated Student Body, working on the Publicity committee, and with the school newspaper.

Gym class was actually sort of fun at the Yeshivah of Flatbush High School.  My friend Joe and I would basically hang out in the weights and supplies room, talking about theater and movies, all the while lifting VERY light weights in a lackadaisical (sp?) fashion, intensifying our light weight workout whenever the gym teacher (Mr. Glazer) would come into the room.  Once in a while, Mr. Glazer would insist that we needed to do a little more active work, so we'd get out into the gym proper and play a pathetic game or two of handball (no jokes, please) and then back to Musical Theater Discussions and weight training.

Luckily, gym was Pass/Fail, and the only way to fail was by not showing up and changing into your gym clothes, so no grades to worry about.
