I'll watch another couple of episodes of KOLCHAK before watching INVASION and NIGHT STALKER off the DVR tonight. With Friday night TV not offering me much to watch, I have to program an evening of entertainment myself!

I thought this would be interesting to those of us interested in aspect ratios. It's a comparison of a scene from the first DVD release of BEN-HUR and its more recent second release.

As you can see, the new release does contain more picture information on each side and on the bottom, too. Not that what's there is all THAT important, but one always wants as much of the frame as is possible to see.

Forgive the ratty scan. My scanner isn't the greatest in the world.

RE:  PERT KELTON

Many years ago, when the Internet was younger than it is today (and so was I) I had a text-only connection at work which I could access from home with a snail-modem veeeeery slowly.

One of the channels was airing "The Honeymooners, the Lost Episodes" with Pert Kelton as Alice.  When I searched on Yahoo (Google was not yet abirthin'.) I found a site put up by her family in her memory.  I thought at the time that was a wonderful thing to do.  You see, such sites were a rarity then.

I see that it still exists, albeit much spiffier.

WFO I enjoyed your story and the link for Pert.  I didn’t realize she died so young.  I noticed one of the sources was the company Keith worked for in Michigan.

Re:  Night Stalker.  The new version co-stars Cotter Smith (is that right, MattH?--it's something like that), who lives in Milwaukee, WI (he "commutes" to LA believe it or not) and runs a theater company that just produced my father-in-law's play "Family Tea."  Betsy just got back from WI to see it and she was quite fond of Mr. Smith and has been eager to see the show, which, unfortunately (or maybe fortunately, LOL), we haven't been able to catch yet (I have a gig on Thursday nights and we usually tape Survivor to watch when I get back).

Well, the hits to my Farmer article today are truly staggering (at least relatively speaking, LOL).  It's in the hundreds already today, when on a typical day I get maybe 10-20 hits.  I'm starting to wonder if NPR sent out press releases on the upcoming lobotomy program.  Their press packet was supposed to include a link to my article.  The weird thing is according to my hit counter it's people searching for "Frances Farmer" with various search engines.  If they just entered the URL (which they would do, I assume, if it were printed in a press release) the hits would show up as "no referring link."  Maybe the Biography ran again.  ???

Yes, Cotter Smith is in NIGHT STALKER. That was interesting information about his commuting.

The show is pulling a slightly larger audience than the show it replaced (LIFE AS WE KNOW IT) opposite CSI, but I'd be surprised if it runs more than one season.

I have not ordered the Val Lewton boxed set of films yet. I keep hoping to find one used for less than the internet asking price of a new set ($41). I guess I'll have to wait a month or two more to find it reduced substantially.

DR Ben,
So glad you enjoyed Sweeny Todd. I found the scaled down production compelling but I've only seen the PBS version and wasn't sure what a true fan of the show would think.  I agree about the tuba, but did get a kick out of it

I'm sleepy. We did the office outing today.  I had to be there at 7:30 am to turn off the alarm and let people in.  We did computer training, CPR/Difibulator training, ate pizza, played the trivia game I dreamed up - which was a hit - then did our "actvities" together.  I went bowling with 3 others. We were all really bad, but bowled 2 games and had a great time.

I don't think so, JR--the hits are coming from all over the country.  I'm thinking at this point that the Biography must have aired and it's just an unusually large segment of the population that was interested in learning more.  I always get a *little* spike after it airs, but this one really kind of blows my mind.  I'm going to be really curious to see what happens after the NPR thing airs.

Jeff, I just got an e-mail from A&E announcing that all of their VHS tapes are on sale...up to 75% off!  Maybe people are looking at what's actually on sale and finding the video!  Then, they probably want to find out more about Frances and are led to your article.
