Good Evening!

Back from Chicago starring Ms. Brooke Shields...

I have to say that as much as I do like the show, this version is still not the show.  It's still the glorified concert version it started off as.  Minimal set, minimal costumes, etc.  *And I still remember hoping that when the show "transferred" from City Center to the Richard Rodgers (wasn't that where it was originally?), that they were going to expand the playing/dancing area - Oh! how I would love to see the "Cell Block Tango" take place on a full stage!  However, I will say that this version of the show has developed over the years - the actors and actresses don't mug and pose as much as they originally did, and the producers and director(s) have allowed for the individual cast members to show more of their own personality.  With that disclaimer out the way...

It was a good show.  Luba Mason as Velma Kelly acquits herself nicely.  -And it's nice to see that she escaped from the cultural dessert that was The Ten Commandments.  Clarke Peters' Billy Flynn seemed a little vocally strained tonight, and I missed the innate sexuality that James Naughton brought to the role.  Debra Monk is a wonderful Mama Morton, although I found myself feeling that she is sort of wasted in this production - but I think that's just the way the production is fashioned.  And R. Lowe is one of the best Mary Sunshine's I've ever heard.  The high notes and the quality of those notes were actually quite beautiful at times.

As for the Roxie of Brooke Shields...  Dance-wise, she really holds her own.  -Unlike Melanie Griffith who basically did none of the choreography when she stepped into the show (and then got raves from the critics).  Vocally, unfortunately, she just seemed not right for the role.  I'm still wondering if it's the Chicago accent she's trying to adopt, or whether she was holding back tonight.  I just kept wishing that she would open her mouth more - everything seemed clenched.  Maybe the role is too low for her?  And I also noticed that the tempos for her numbers were a few ticks faster than what I'm used to hearing.  Hmmm...

In any case, she really does her own, and the audience ate her up.

And on a purely "hormonal" note... The men in the ensemble...  -I'd like to thank whoever invented that black mesh fabric that most of the men's shirts are made out of.  ;)

*And my only general quibble about the whole evening was the sound.  Those horns carry well enough without being mic'd...  I found myself straining to hear lyrics more than I would have liked too.  Luba Mason, in particular, seemed overwhelmed too much of the time - especially at the top of the second act.  I thought for a second she had forgotten the words, and had just started singing gibberish.  Well... she was just not balanced well against the orchestra, and her words just got lost in the mix.

BK has another connection to Popeye's besides enjoying their chicken and inspiring his readers to do the same.

The guy who sang their old jingle, "Love that Chicken from Popeye's," is, I would wager, the very same guy who sings BK's song "Sittin' Pretty" in the film THE RATINGS GAME.

Trivia you can get nowhere else.

Anyone remember the ill-named, ill-conceived restaurant chain SAMBO'S? I think it disappeared in the early 80s.

OH!

And the collective sigh - a surprised and happy one - that went up from the audience when they opened the exit doors at the end of the show...

The rain had stopped...

-In fact, I decided to take a bit of a walk after the show just because I could.  And without opening my umbrella too!

And it's still not raining right now.

I remember Sambo's.  And the controversy too.  -Now I'm trying to remember if I ever ate there.

-And I always wondered about that now-defunct buffet chain: Po' Folks.

Bulgarian music is quite sensational because it is an odd combination of Eastern and Western styles and harmonics.
There was a popular album in the 80s, Les Mystere Voix Des Bulgares, that is a real treat.

I'm so pleased that folks seem to be enjoying the book!  That makes me very happy indeed.  Please, in discussing it, remember that it really IS a work of fiction.  One always uses thing in one's life as fodder, but one has to make them work, story-wise and character-wise.  One obvious bit of fiction - I have never written a hit song, nor am I sixty, nor did I begin producing CDs in the early 80s.

Po Folks was one of my all-time favorites when I first moved to Atlanta. They weren't buffets in Georgia, but they would have incredible all-you-can-eat chicken and country fried steak deals on friday nights. That was when I could just eat like a bottomless pit and it had no effect on me.

They were made to look like country shacks on the outside. Then the inevitable marketing strategy switch, the name change to just FOLKS (lame!), and then they were gone. :(

On a vacation once, I got sick in a Sambo's in Kentucky. The next day my sisters had written a song to sing in the car commemorating the event.

I'm thinkin' 300 posts.

Surprised to find a review on barnesandnoble.com.  Don't know if it's someone from here or not, but here it is:

Tom, a musical theatre fan, October 14, 2005, 5 out of 5 stars
GET AWAY TO THE BAHAMAS
I've read Mr. Kimmel's other books - I especially liked the Kritzer books, and I thought Writer's Block was a strange and fun read. So, I picked this up last week and I have to say I read it in one sitting and could not put it down. I love the milieu of the book, a milieu that Kimmel really writes expertly. Like his other books, this has some very funny things in it, but it's also got lots of murder, keeps you guessing, but somehow the tone of the book is suffused with melancholy. I don't know if I'd call it a traditional mystery, but if you like that genre you'll like this book. Or, if you just like a good yarn really well told (I loved the gimmick of the book, which I won't give away), then give this a try.

Popeye's yes. I stopped by there on the way home, the one in Jose's neighborhood (which keeps its employees behind a wall of bulletproof glass). I just got a big box of chicken and some fries and settled in to cheer on the White Sox.

Great chicken, and now I have some in the fridge for later in the weekend. Have I told you I love cold chicken as much as warm chicken?

Ah, yes, the bulletproof glass... with the really big windows/openings in it.  Hmm...

However, the KFC in Southwest DC near Arena Stage has bullet proof glass too.  As well as the "carousel" you put your money on, spin, then they put your order on it, and spin it back to you.

HOWEVER, there's a place in Richmond near my old apartment that also has bulletproof glass.  Alas, they have no carousel thingy.  So, when one orders ribs from them - and they have some darn good ribs - they have to slip them one or two at a time through/under the slot in the glass.  Individual sandwiches and side orders usually fit comfortably through the slot.  Drinks are provided by the vending machine on the porch.

Finish my Bollywood movie...it was strange, but fun. So many Gods and Goddesses in the movie I needed a scorecard to keep track.

And the special effects reminded me of those in a George Melies silent film.

Will Matt H and JRand be trying to journey to NYC that week as well?

Hey, my credit cards will be totally paid off by then! ::) Just sayin'....

The post office near where I work, you can't just hand a package to the postal person. You have to open this garage-door-like window that only opens if their garage-door-like window is closed. When you close it, then they can open theirs and take your package. It's damn ridiculous.
