Disney voice characters: It would be unusual for Mr François to get facts wrong about anything Disney. And yes correct again Mr François. And where is our French friend today?

DR Tom, I can't answer you about how the televised KISS ME KATE was put together, but I could have shot Michael Blakemore dead for ever taking the camera off Michael Berresse during his incredible "Bianca." To waste precious seconds on focusing the camera on the Lois character's who's just watching him at the expense of missing even a second of his masterful athleticism is SO WRONG. And Blakemore directed the thing for the stage, so he above ANYONE ELSE should have known what an incredible effort it was to accomplish. Thank God I saw it in NYC and got to experience that number (and the whole show) first hand.

It's time for a break, I guess.  Got a haircut this morning, then went to LensCrafters for new spectacles...regular glasses and sunglasses.  Stopped by Trader Joe's while waiting, then went to Burger King for "brunch", and lastly I went to Tower where the prices are way too high ($18.99 is now the normal CD price), but I did find some nicely priced ($13.99) CDs...Barbara Cook's Christmas CD on sale, along with "Matrix: Revolutions" at the same price, and I found Christopher Cross' greatest hits for $9.99.

All in all, a well-spent morning on a glorious, crisp day in the Bay Area!

It's beautiful here in the SOuth, too. Highs in the high 70s with cloudless blue skies (Irving Berlin reference).

Goodness notes are slow today.
I woke up at 9:30, checked HHW (as I always do first thing in the morning) then decided my couch looked rather comfy, and went back to sleep for an hour.
My dear friend Tiana and I had brunch at IHOP.  I had the pumpkin pancakes, which were delicious as always, and soft boiled eggs...which came to the table hardboiled instead.  I considered making a fuss, then decided against it.
Now I must get some work done on my paper which is due next week.
Clothing check - dark blue jeans, black sports bra, bare feet :)

Guess there weren't many tracks on the Chris Cross Cd Ron! $2 per track?

To all those who have said the business they would like to try is that of show, I offer this ditty from a Musical I wrote with my colleague, Mr. Roger Lee Leasor, when we were but wee sprigs of twigs of lads back in college, so if it falls lyrically short of Mr. Porter or Mr. Hart, we have a half-assed excuse...youth, innocent youth!  The muscial was a 1930's backstage epic called OH ME, OH MY!, a Musical Idyll.  The song was sung by Marvin, a stage manager with higher aspirations:

Backstage life
Is such a strife
It's always the worst of plights.
But my name could be in lights,
Mine could be fame and glory
Were it not for the same old story...

Why can't I tap like Fred Astaire?
The way he moves his feet ain't fair.
My feet have ten toes,
Why don't they know what his know.
Why can't I tap like Fred Astaire,
And make like dancing in the air.

And what if I could only sing
Just like that sexy warbler Bing?
My throat could croon too,
Soon as it learned Boo-boo-boo-boo...
O gee, if I could only sing,
Just like that golden-throated Bing.

And what if I could act
Just like John Barrymore?
My Hamlet, in fact,
Would be what the world
Waited for!
The house it would should,
Applause paramount,
The crowd would leap to its feet and cry!

(Spoken) And in the eight row of the balcony, young women, overcome by emotion, would faint and sigh!

Ovations and screams,
Bravos all supreme,
All the critics kowtowing to me,
But, alas, my "to be's" not to be...

Why must all talent pass me by
And leave me hanging high and dry?
Must Fred, Bing, and Jack
Have all the things that I lack?
Why must all talent pass me by
And leave me dreaming starry-eyed.

Music & Lyrics copyrighted by Roger Lee Leasor and Charles Edward Pogue

This musical actually won some contest from some New York "producer" who we sent the script and some of the songs to.  He contacted us a couple of times and then we never heard from him again....our first of many show-biz disillusionments.

Does Christopher Cross record/play dates any more? How can someone be the biggest name in pop music one year or two and then be a forgotten man within a few more years? Amazing.

I saw that Kristin Chenoweth missed this afternoon's matinee of WICKED but is slated to be in this evening's performance. I hope her illness has cleared up, and I'm sure there are a lot of ticket holders out there who agree.

Speaking of something DR Jason was mentioning this morning about likely Tony winners. Of course, I haven't seen ANY of the potential nominees, but that business of splitting votes doesn't really run true for the Tonys as it does for the Oscars. Lots of people have won Tonys against people from their own show in the same category. Just last year, Jane Krakowski won for NINE while sharing the category with two other ladies from her show, one of whom was a Broadway legend (Chita Rivera). Nathan Lane beat out Matthew Broderick in THE PRODUCERS a couple of years ago as well. I think in the case of the Tonys, voters pick the PERSON they would like to see win regardless of the show. Now, I'm not saying Donna Murphy won't win (though I feel Julie Andrews would have won that Tony if she hadn't made such a big deal about not being considered), and Kristin already has a Tony which MIGHT keep people from voting for her (though it didn't hurt Audra McDonald her second and third time winning). But she got such rapturous reviews that I'd say she seems the likely front runner rather than Murphy. Of course, Murphy's show hasn't opened yet, and her reviews could be equally ecstatic. Should be an interesting contest this year.

Oh, if I had been smart I would have loved to be a surgeon; I have so much admiration for them!

Alas, I tend to faint -- YES, I'm chicken! -- when I need just a blood test!

Like DR Charles Pogue, I would have enjoyed being a lounge singer à la Michael Feisntein; I have the "hands" for piano. The only rub is that I can't stand... smoky rooms!

DR Matt H was right regarding Verna Felton:
she also was the voice of
--Colonel Hati's voice (Jungle Book: "Sure, dear, an elephant never forgets!")
-- another elephant in Dumbo.
-- a squaw in Peter Pan.

and she also voiced TWO Disney meanies:
-- the Queen of Hearts in ALICE? and
-- Aunt Sarah in Lady & The Tramp...

I agree with DR HHW God Ron:
Pat Carroll is an out standing Ursula in Little Mermaid; she could be a great Mama Morton too, imho.

SWW, I'm glad to see you're feeling better.  Don't give up!

Maya, sounds like your audition went very well!  At least you chose better songs than I did for my college audition.  Trust me, you don't even want to know.

The huz (a Kander & Ebb reference) and I received an unexpected windfall from Crate and Barrell today when we returned the three extra identical sets of silverware we received and a lamp we no longer have room for.  Which means I might make it through our LA trip without getting a job!  But if anyone in LA has a part-time job available for moi, especially as a studio singer, I'll be there December 22 through January 9.

Speaking of jobs, my alternate career would be a veterinarian.  I would raise, breed, and train horses at home, and my practice would focus on large animals.

Speaking of jobs, mine ends in just a couple more weeks, and then I'll be back pounding the pavement with DR Jason!  I can't wait!  I have SO much work to do, though, to get ready:

1.  Clean out audition book, learn or re-learn songs, polish, weed out the clunkers, add a few new ones to freshen it up;
2.  Take dance classes so I don't feel like so much of a loser at dance calls;
3.  Get back into voice lessons and coachings;
4.  Get headshots printed and reproduced.

When the picture posting function is back online, perhaps I could post some headshots and you DRs could offer your opinions?

Merci.

DR Francois has reminded me that I've been meaning to pull out my Masterpiece Edition laserdisc of ALICE IN WONDERLAND and watch it again, and I keep forgetting. I didn't buy Disney's first ALICE on DVD, and now I'm glad I didn't since Disney is giving it the same 2 disc special edition treatment that SLEEPING BEAUTY got this year. I suspect, like SLEEPING BEAUTY, all those wonderful special features from the laserdisc set will be ported over into this new 2 DVD set. I'll be sure to buy it.

Amazing that ALICE was such a flop on its initial release. I guess the story was just too fragmented for people back then. It's loads of fun to my eyes.

Good evening everyone!

Sorry for being e and t so far today but my older sister kidnapped me post our weekly Saturday breakfast to go shopping for suit sets.  We found not a one.  She has the same problems I do in finding clothes: we have broad shoulders which make us need larger sizes to fit across but then which do no fit at all any where else.  She was getting more and more depressed at finding nothing and especially at having to start looking at sizes as high up as 16 when she herself is normally no more than a 12-14.

My preferred career would have to be as a cultural attaché (preferably in the Canadian diplomatic corps, but I'm not picky).  My aunt's best friend was one in NYC and her job consisted on going to cocktail parties and openings whenever a Canadian artist was showing his/her work in the city as a representative of the Canadian Government.  Not only did she get a swanky apartment paid for by the gov't but she also had a monthly WARDROBE BUDGET.  The best thing is that they had the attachés divided by what area of "culture" they knew best.  She was the fine arts specialist, but there was also one for literature, music and theatre.  What wouldn't I give for that...

Although I do like Charles' idea of being a wealthy dilletante.  That would also be enjoyable.

Hi everybody.

OK, here's my English assignment. I have to give a ten minute presentation on this poem:

Disillusionment of Ten O'Clock

The houses are haunted
By white night-gowns.
None are green,
Or purple with green rings,
Or green with yellow rings,
Or yellow with blue rings.
None of them are strange,
With socks of lace
And beaded ceintures.
People are not going
To dream of baboons and periwinkles.
Only, here and there, an old sailor,
Drunk and asleep in his boots,
Catches tigers
In red weather.

Not full out help, but helpful suggestions.

Start with Rhyme schemes.. if none, explain how this lack reflects the theme of the poem. Repetition, use of imagery. Why tigers? What do they mean? Why the “red weather”? Does this suggest hell? Or is it just a reference to the sun set? Lace? What does lace mean? How does it relate back to the idea of haunted houses? Is it significant? Why aren’t the people dreaming? Is it cause they aren’t there? Why does he pick disillusionment for use in the title? What is he being disillusioned about?

Hey everyone. Hope you all had good Saturdays. I had the most delicious japonese/chinese lunch.  I went with my aunt to some craft fairs, and I was going to drive her back to my place. But I asked if she minded stopping off to pick up some buns. Anyway when I got back to the car, we both smelled the most delicious aroma. And we were both hungry. So she said, "let's have lunch at Kim Shing" (a newish Japonese/chinese restaurant). We had tempura and it was so good. But then when we were done, my uncle came to pick her up. And he wanted fried rice and chicken soo guy. So they brought it to the table. And it was huge and looked so good. So we ate that too :)

Apparently the table behind us had General Taos chicken and left half of it over and did not take it home.  How can someone do that to General Taos?

And Two. I completely agree with DR Matt. Having 2 actors from the same show does not nessarily cancel them both out. The examples he gave above show that.

Ok... recap of the Ball last night...

It was interesting to say the least. I stayed at the hotel for over 12 hours which is a very long, long time. I got there at 2:15 and left at 4:30 am.
Let's see.. how shall I recap this? How about going hour by hour (more or less)?

2:15-3:00: I get to the hotel, and hop into the debutante suite (very swank, but my god it filled up with large white dresses quickly!) I took a quick shower and then did my hair (left it down curly with lots of products to keep it nice the whole evening). Then I put on my evening gown with my tartan sash, did my makeup and rushed down to the lobby to talk to the conceirge. Yes.. I was in a downtown hotel at 3 pm in the afternoon in full formal wear. I will try to put up a picture of me and cygopp sunday when we get access to his scanner.

3:00-4:30:Got the corsages and began to help the girls to dress. This involves scotch guard, white wedding gowns, crinlonines, white gloves ( we had eight pairs of white gloves.. of course they got mixed up) and tartan sashes. Not to mention the constant pleading for cigerette breaks. I put on nine tartan sashes that night.... I never want to see plaid again. One escort arives with a flask. He proceeded to get drunk even before they went on to do their dance.. oy.

4:30-6:30: Debutante dance practice and photo session. I gave my speech:
"You will listen to me, cause when I'm talking to you, it's cause I've got something that you absolutely have to do to tell you about. No one cares about you in the end, but I'm the one that gets in trouble when you misbehave". They actually listened and treated me nicely (yeah!). Then at 5:15 we preceed to the photos with the guests of honour (goh), the earl and countess of Hopetoun. In between there was a very serious debutante and escort spat. Military tried to take care of it, it didn't work, it went so loud that hotel security came. I led crying debutante to washroom and convinced her the show must go on while my mother tried to convince escort that he would not leave. But they resolved and were charming the rest of the night.. just a little misunderstanding ( and they stopped shouting when the earl and countess walked in). Photos went well, and then I ruled a 15 minute break for everyone to cool off. Then on to another dance practice... oy...

6:30-8:00: Champagne reception. CYGOPP looked dashing in his tux, I mingled and got a break from the debs and let them run around. Shook hands with a lot of really rich people. Lots and lots of check kisses. Meet up with old friends and endured curious stares from hotel guests who popped up to see what was going on.

8:00-9:30: Dinner: rabbit, haggis, neeps and tatties, duck and some pototoe dish. Quite tasty. Tricked jewish CYGOPP into eating Haggis. Dealt with sobering up escort, listened to toast to the queen and queen mother; Haggis party was awesome- groaned when the wee beastie was killed, much to the confusion of the people who had never seen the Haggis party before. Calmed another debutante who was having problems with escort.

Here's the worst part of the evening: Ended up in tears myself when one of my debs came to get me to tell me that they were talking my dad to the hosptial. He was having chest pains and didn't have his nitro-glycerin with him, so the hotel called the ambulance. It's not fun to have your dad rolled away and all strapped up. My mom and brother went with him and left me behind cause I still had to take care of the debs. Thankfully not everyone was in the hallway because they were eating although by the end of the evening most everyone knew. The earl and countess were apparently " quite concerned". My dad is fine-- he has heart problems, but they still don't know what was wrong. We went to visit him at 5 in the morning (still in evening gowns) and he's back home now. Ambulance men thought it was a lark to be called to the ball.

9:30-11:00: Showtime for me and the girls. I get the page and flower girl organized with their little basket of flowers as we run way behind schedule. The debutantes and escorts marched out nicely behind the GOH and head table and bagpipers. We had about half an hour originally till presented.. so I let them go on their bathroom breaks and cigerette breaks. Apparently I'm too strict-- I don't care... they enjoy it more when there is actually rules to follow. The ball chairman told me I could leave if I need too, but I stayed with the girls, my mom was back for the hosptial, cause there was nothing we could do with my father when he's sick.... I kept having to tell the debs ten more minutes, ten more minutes. as everyone was running late.

Then, the cadet pipe band was coming out of the ballroom to pipe them in. It was at this moment that one of the boyfriends decides to break up with his deb. More tears, I rush to the bathroom to bring her back, saying, you absolutely have to go on, yell at him later! I get them organized, they march into the ballroom, stop at the end of the ballroom floor and as escorts move to their spots to prepare for the dance, the girls wait for their names to be called. The dance teacher walked to each of them telling them to have fun, I walk behind her telling them, if they screw up, I'll kill them :D One very nice man asked which one was mine.. I politely told him, all of them-- he was confused.

The dance went wonderfully, no clothing feel off, so I can't complain. They performed beautifully.

11:00-4:30: Scottish Country dancing! It would have been a bit more enjoyable if my dad had been there, because I know how much my mom enjoyed dancing, but we managed to get her to dance a bit. The hosptial phoned and told us that my dad was stable and was fine. CYGOPP joked he only did it to get out of country dancing. So we danced, walked around, took an elevator ride with the earl and countess (which was interesting-- she was wearing a really big tiara ) and then eventually cleared out to go to the hosptial. All in all, if my dad hadn't been ill, it would have been an awesome evening, despite all the tears and all that. I thrive on organizing things.

So yup.. that was my evening and my explanation for why I've been E and T.

I have 2 points.

One. How do we even know that Idina and Kristin will be nominated in the same category? I've read a couple of places that mentioned maybe Kristin would be nominated for Supporting. <SNIP>

If I remember the Tony rules correctly, if the peformer's name is above the title, and I don't know if either Idina's or Kristin's is, then she (or he) automatically has to be considered in the lead actress/actor catagory...unless the producers of the show ask the Tony committee to make an exception (but, of course, that doesn't mean that someone can't be considered for lead role award if their name isn't above the title).  If Kristin's name is above the title, then the producers have to ask for an exception.

I first heard about this when the revival of Chicago first opened on Broadway.  Joel Grey's name was above the title so he automatically had to be considered for LEAD actor, even though the role of Amos is most definitely a supporting role.  The producers of the show FORGOT to send a letter (I guess a very simple procedure) asking the Tony committee to consider him for FEATURED (supporting) actor instead of lead actor.  Since the role wasn't LEAD actor worthy, he wasn't nominated.

Unless I'm totally wrong.

I see lurkers, but I don't see posts.  I need to see posts as well as lurkers.  We must not reach a new all-time low.

That said, there ain't nothin' wrong with eighty-plus posts.

That said, we need more.

That said

Once upon a time there was a pair of socks made of lace.

A young girl name Penelope was given the pair of lace socks as a present.  The minute she tried them on something strange happened...

What am I, Spaulding Gray?  What am I, doing a monologue?  We're telling a story here, peoples.

Meanwhile, Mark has removed some of the images from very early on and we can now post pix again.  Just know that we will occasionally do this image housecleaning from time to time.

Meanwhile, here's a hard-to-see photo of one of the first pieces of art I purchased on eBay - a wonderful watercolor by the great Raphael Soyer.

Good evening all.

I'm home from a day long shopping spree.  I was good to myself.  I think I could even go so far as to say I was VERY good to myself.    :)

All in all, a well-spent morning on a glorious, crisp day in the Bay Area!
So it was cold there too, huh?

I have to make an observation.  I never could get the highlight the word to change it to bold, italic, etc –I had to hand type what I wanted using the brackets (you know mean [] where the<> is) but I was using Netscape.  Now that I switched back to Internet Explorer, everything seems to work find.   I LOVE the fact I can now highlight, point, click and whamo, jammo it's done!  In fact, I just used it!   :)

I can also now see the red X box where the graphics I tried to post didn’t work.  I should point out, however, that with Netscape, I still can see everything fine.  I don’t know if that’s of any help to the webmaster but thought you might like to know.  It seems the boards don’t like Netscape.  I have problems with I use it (Netscape)on other boards as well.

As far as another job–I also have several.  I like the voice over idea but in the past I wanted to be an interpreter for the deaf.  When I was very little, don’t laugh, I wanted to be a nun.   Not because of any great religious feelings (in fact I have to laugh at  myself because I am so anti-church now) but because of the outfit.  I LOVED the look of the habit and thought it would be neat to get to wear a veil all of the time.  I should also point out that thoughts of  this career choice usually surfaced after watching something like The Bells Of St. Marys or A Nuns Story or some such.  I never really gave thought to what all it really entailed.

I saw where ya’ll were talking about old Christmas shows the other night.  You missed some of my all time favorites–in fact I bought a DVD with three of them on it today.  The Year Without A Santa Claus, Rudolphs Shiny New Year (my least favorite of the three–( I would not have bought it alone) and Nestor, The Long-Eared Christmas Donkey.  I couldn’t find one of my other very favorites–The Little Drummer Boy and the sequel (can’t think of the name) or I would have got them as well.

Well, there’s to many subjects to try to catch up on so I’m going to quit for now or I’ll never get this thing posted.

Penelope was surprised to find herself walking toward the front door.  The bell hadn't rung, it must be the socks.  But by the time she got to the other side of the room - lo and behold, someone was at the door.  It was the Fed Ex man with Penny's delivery from Amazon.  At last, her new Britany Spears CD had arrived.

Penelope walked toward the Cd player, but suddenly found herself heading in the direction of the telephone.  And...yes...before she quite arrived there....the phone RANG!!!

My God - thought Penelope - I have come into the possession of the Fabulous Fortune Telling Socks of Our Lady of Fatima.   The only item of clothing more blessed was, of course, Our Lady of Fatima's Hat!

Penelope answered the ringing phone, but before she could share her good fortune and voice said.....
