BREEZIN' ALONG WITH THE BREEZE
« on: November 22, 2003, 12:14:04 AM »

Weren't today's notes scintillatingly scintillating?  If you don't know the answer to that question, you know what to do.  In the meantime, post away, my pretties.  Did you know that certain smilies were butt cheeks?

Good morning!

As for other professions...

I'd like to be a restauranteur.  Someplace small, but kind of ritzy.  I know it would be hard work, but it would fun to give it a try sometime.

And a part of me would still like to be an astronomer.  I was quite the amateur one when I was a child around the ages of 9 and 10.  The night sky still wonders me.  -AH, a Plain & Fancy reference.

And, now, Goodnight.

First thing that comes to mind would be going the Jason/Joy/other-DR's-as-well route and try to make my living as a performer.  Not that there isn't plenty of performance involved in teaching, but... you know what I mean!

hmmm...alternate professions.  Slightly difficult question when I haven't even picked a primary one yet.
But some of my dream ones...
Animator...I've always loved computer art, and I'd LOVE to work somewhere like Pixar.
Performer...yeah, that's only a dream
hmm...I'll post more if I think of them tomorrow.  Right now my brain is begging for sleep.  'night everyone!

Plenty of time for me to look back and think about what I could have done had I not chosen the more secure option of teaching. I would have enjoyed being a programmer for radio and possible working in the legal system behind the scenes. With the wisdom and hindsight of age I suspect I would still have been best suited to the caring professions - a nurse with specialist interest in pediatrics or geriatrics. I would love to have the gift of song but I have no desire to be a performer, although as Jed has discovered, every day of teaching is one hell of a performance and not much of it is scripted.

Those are good vibes to MayaMark'sPapaya for her audition this morning.  ;D

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]``~~~~````~~~~````~~~~````~~~~`````~~~~~````~~~[/move]

And those are vibes for DR SWW because it is Saturday and he is in a new place and in a NEW place.  :D

DR JOSE thanks so much for the photos yesterday.  Everyone must go see the dessert tour of the world, Stephen Sondheim w/Jose, Tom from OZ and friend and Jose, and Jose + niece, nephew, and legs.  :-*

And Mr BK posted some very nice pictures last night as well.  It was just a jolly time.

I think if I could do something else, I would like to be a musician.  I can play AT the piano, but I would like to be able to play for shows, accompany vocalists, and sometimes play just for myself.  Right now the thing I play best is my CD player!

My, but today's scintillating notes are certainly scintillatingly short and scintillatingly early.

I would love to be a filmmaker if I could just operate in a vacuum minus all the crapola that surrounds this business called show.  I satisfy myself by watching, talking, reading, thinking eating and breathing film.

I would like to be able to sing and dance really well.   To be able to sing as well as our dear Jason or Guy Haines or our own td would be a thrill.

I have to go to work early this morning.  The Golden Retriever Connection (a rescue and foster group) is doing Hanukah and Christmas photos today at the store.  I need to let Santa in , so he can change.  It will be a very busy day, but it'll also be fun to see all the dogs.

I never took Mazal down for Hanukah photos because we just had a family portrait taken with her, but DRMusicGuy is coming down with Sugar today so we can all have our photo taken with Santa.

Yesterday, I played an audio cassette by a very talented performer, Michael Byers.   I think he quit the business which is quite unfortunate.  DrMusicGuy did all the backings on this album, and I thought Lyn did a great job.   Hadn't heard it in years.  Michael was great too.

I am up very early this morning, Dear Readers, and I have a very full day, indeed, in front of me!

First, I must clean my house, before the Pasadena Department of Health condemns it.  Then off to a haircut.  Isn't that too too?  On a dear reader's suggestion from two weeks ago, I shall have all of my hairs cut this time.

I shall then travel to the southern tip of L.A. for a walking tour of historic San Pedro.  The Los Angeles area is filled with all kinds of historic sites and outstanding architectural points of interest, and I rather enjoy these walking tour explorations.

I shall then meet up with a good friend for dinner, and we shall together take in a local production of Terrence McNally's Master Class.  I saw the play in New York, with Miss Patti LuPone, and enjoyed it, opera buff that I am, and am looking forward to seeing it once again.

So what am I doing typing out a lengthy post while all these wonderful activities await?  Beside doing my duty as a HHW regular, when it comes to house cleaning, I redefine the whole notion of procrastination, that's what I'm doing.

I, too, think architecture would have been a fine profession to go into, if a little bit hard to spell.

So, in my box at the college yesterday were forms for students to write evaluations of me.   :o

Nobody told me there'd be such a thing.  But, the total lack of feedback on this new job was a little off-putting.  It says I should make up three questions, but, oddly, they have to have answers like very, not much or not at all.  So I can't really ask what I want.  It also says they'll need number 2 pencils.

So, at the end of class, I told the class to bring number 2 pencils next session.  And they said, "Oh, pencils are usually given out with the evaluations."

I'll bet!  Anything attached to these pencils?  Like little Nestle Crackl bars, or dollar bills?  Hmmm?  Hmmm?  ::)

So much to talk about this morning.

DR JRand, you have been working out! Your new picture shows much buffer, studlier you, and I like the new you. Please stay the same always!  :)

Like DR Jed, I would like to have tried earning a living on the stage. As he said, there's a lot of performance art in being a good teacher (at least the way I did it), and I don't regret that profession for a second, but I know how much I've always loved "showing off" in front of people on stage, and that's definitely the job I would like to have attempted.

Noel: You'll love evaluations time.  Simple adore it.  A friend of mine once memorized his little gem (at this particular university they pass the comments on to the teacher, anonymously, of course):

"He to hard on us.  We not graduat students."

Try not to take any bad comments personally; take any good comments as proof of your godlike status! ;)

Jrand: Believe it or not...NO.  I still have yet to see Miss Farmer in a film.  Which one do you recommend as my first?

Now, on to a subject from yesterday, Disney villainess character voices.

No, DR td, Verna Felton was not the voice of the stepmother in CINDERELLA or Malificent in SLEEPING BEAUTY. Eleanor Audley was indeed the actress who voiced those memorable villainesses.

Verna was in both movies, however. She was the Fairy Godmother in CINDERELLA (sang the Oscar-nominated "Bibbidi-Boobidi-Boo") and played good fairy Flora (the one who was partial to pink) in SLEEPING BEAUTY.

I loved seeing Eleanor pop up in 60s sitcoms. She was also the scheming neighbor Mrs. Billings who could always talk Rob Petrie into directing the local talent show on THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW.

This one is easy...if I could do anything else, I would be a cabaret/musical theatre actress.  Ever since I was a little girl,  I knew what I wanted to be, except for one little problem--I don't sing all that well!

Happy Saturdy!   :P  ;D  ;)

Wow! Two more Broadway shows are throwing in the towel after getting panned.  Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks (Polly Bergen & Mark Hammil) closes Sunday after a four week run and 30 performances.

The musical Laughing Room Only (Jackie Mason) is throwing in the towel November 30th after 14 perfromances. I guess producers are getting smarter?

The show will surely be remembered as the musical that contained the immortal lyric, "Boy, can that Jew sing!"

But it remains to be seem that these two shows did not get good reviews to begin with. Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks opened at the Coconut Grove Playhose in Miami with Rue McClahan in the Bergen role. She felt that change were needed and when they wouldn't make them she left. It looks like she was right. As for Jackie Mason's show basically the pans said the only bright spot was Mason's routines.

But Mason has had diminishing staying power on Broadway when he made his comeback in The World According to Me!  that ran for 373 performances. Each show after that ran shorter. Brand New ran 216, Politically Incorrect ran 348, Love Thy Neighbor--234, Much Ado About Everything ran 186--- and his last standup show ran only 36 performances.

Though it should be noted that his last attempt at an original show was in 1969 when he co-wrote and starred in the play A TEaspoon Evert Four Hours which opened and closed on opening night after running for 97 previews, But it did have a some notable Bernie West, Marilyn Cooper, & Lee Meredith.

Most of the PBS stations should be broadcasting Oklahoma starring the fellow above. It is the London production of the less successful NY revival the recently ran on Broadway.

Well DR Lulu, I would recommend Come and Get It which is available on VHS and DVD and should be at any BIG rental outlet.  Also, Son of Fury which costars Tyrone Power.  These are the ones that are easiest to find.

The upcoming Broadway revival of Larry Gelbart's comedy Sly Fox, set to open at Broadway's Barrymore Theatre on April 1, 2004, has added three more stars to an already seasoned cast.

Joining the previously announced Richard Dreyfuss, Elizabeth Berkley, Bob Dishy, René Auberjonois, Bronson Pinchot and Irwin Corey are Peter Scolari as the Chief of Police, Rachel York as Miss Fancy and Nicholas Wyman as Captain Crouch

Let's hope that the play doesn't fold before it reaches Broadway. Although they are going to have to find some power house actors to replace Dreyfus if he leaves. The original starred  George C Scott and he was replaced by Robert Preston, Vincent Gardinia and Jackie Gleason!!

The Singular Sensations series, in which host Glen Roven speaks with legendary musical theater stars about their careers, will close on Sunday evening after 24 performances at the Village Theater due to disappointing ticket sales.

This week's guest, Florence Henderson, is the third star to appear for one week of performances, discussing her achievements and offering musical highlights of her career. The series opened with Carol Channing and continued with Donna McKechnie. Kitty Carlisle Hart was scheduled to appear next week, and future guests were to have included Lainie Kazan, Elaine Paige, James Naughton, Shirley Jones, Betty Buckley, Mickey Rooney, Jane Powell, and Cy Coleman.

From the NY POST

DOROTHY Loudon was as funny off-stage as she was on.

At her memorial service yesterday, her longtime agent, Lionel Larner, offered the following example:

During the Boston tryout of the flop musical "Lolita, My Love," writer Alan Jay Lerner came running down the aisle with some policemen and told the cast to get out of the theater because there was a bomb in the building.

Deadpanned Loudon: "Another one?"

Loudon won the Tony in 1977 for her hilarious portrayal of Miss Hannigan in "Annie."

Yesterday, Andrea McArdle, who played the title character, recalled the first thing Loudon ever said to her: "Kid, if you ever move while I'm getting a laugh, you won't make it to the curtain call."

As long as their are recordings and videos Miss Loudon won't be forgotten......(From me)

I remember an interview Andrea McArdle gave several years ago in either THEATER WEEK or IN THEATER in which she was still bitter about losing the Tony to Dorothy. She insisted Dorothy should have been in the supporting category leaving her to take the award for playing the title role.

What Andrea didn't understand, of course, was that the Tonys often place people in categories based on their billing, not on the size of the role. In addition, undoubtedly Annie is a larger role than Miss Hannigan, but the size of Dorothy's talent and her ability to steal scenes effortlessly made the number of lines or amount of time on stage immaterial. When I think of ANNIE, I tend to think of Miss Hannigan rather than of Annie. Odd but true.

Hi everybody.

OK, here's my English assignment. I have to give a ten minute presentation on this poem:

Disillusionment of Ten O'Clock

The houses are haunted
By white night-gowns.
None are green,
Or purple with green rings,
Or green with yellow rings,
Or yellow with blue rings.
None of them are strange,
With socks of lace
And beaded ceintures.
People are not going
To dream of baboons and periwinkles.
Only, here and there, an old sailor,
Drunk and asleep in his boots,
Catches tigers
In red weather.

Does anyone know what I could possibly use to fill up ten whole minutes?
