Ron, actually I have a greater tolerance for cold weather in cold weather climates.  It has never bothered me when The Lovely Wife and I go to England...usually in the dead of winter.  And I'm finding it right tolerable here so far.  I was greeted with snow when I drove into the state, shoveling ice off my walk my third day here, and still having heater problems with the car, but I take long walks with Tewkes out in the cold and find it rather invirogating (as does he...he seems to love the cold weather)

Oddly enough, I couldn't stand it when it got cold in California, which was probably rarely ever as cold as it gets here.  I guess it's all what one expects.  But cold in a warm weather climate always bothered me worse than it does here.

I just got this list from Alex Rybeck who got it from Craig Renshaw, who got it from Andrew Peterson who got it from Sarah Fletcher.  God knows who started it, but since it's the TOD:

Christmas songs for the psychiatrically challenged:

Schizophrenia - Do you hear what I hear?

Multiple Personality Disorder - We three kings disoriented are

Amnesia - I don't know if I'll be home for Christmas

Narcissistic - Hark, the herald angels sing about me

Manic - Deck the halls and walls and house and lawn and streets and stores and office and town and cars and buses and trucks and trees and fire hydrants and . . .

Paranoid - Santa Claus is coming to get me

Borderline Personality Disorder - Thoughts of roasting on an open fire

Personality Disorder - You better watch out, I'm gonna cry, I'm gonna pout, maybe I'll tell you why

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells . .

Agoraphobia - I heard the bells on Christmas Day but wouldn't leave my house

Autistic - Jingle Bell Rock and rock and rock and rock . . .

Senile Dementia - Walking in a winter wonderland miles from my house in my slippers and robe

Oppositional Defiant Disorder - I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus so I burned down the house

Social Anxiety Disorder - Have yourself a merry little Christmas while I sit here and hyperventilate

Quote
The union said the latest MTA offer included annual raises of 3 percent, 4 percent and 3.5 percent; the previous proposal included 3 percent raises each year. MTA workers typically earn from $35,000 as a starting salary to about $55,000 annually.

Toussaint said the union wanted a better offer from the MTA, especially when the agency has a $1 billion surplus this year.

"With a $1 billion surplus, this contract between the MTA and the Transport Workers Union should have been a no-brainer," Toussaint said. "Sadly, that has not been the case."

A key issue was the MTA's proposal to raise the age at which new employees become eligible for a full pension from 55 to 62, which the union says is unfair. The MTA later agreed to allow pension eligibility at 55 for new employees, but asked that they contribute 6 percent of their salaries for their first 10 years of employment.

Why did I bother going to college and getting a paralegal degree?  I could be making more money and getting much better benefits sitting in a subway station being rude to people trying to buy subway tokens or getting advice on train schedules.

I sure am not going to get a pension at 55 or 62 or any other time... I contribute 20% of my salary to my 401K which is saying I throw it down the toliet and have to contribute another couple of hundred a month for health care and I have no job security unlike these union workers

I also like A CHRISTMAS STORY, especially because it takes place in the area where I grew up.

vixmom, I'm with you.  These people, both sides, are just reprehensible.  And the fact that there is a LAW prohibiting these people from doing what they're doing and that they are breaking that law is just pathetic.  What will the consequences of this lawbreaking be?  A ten dollar fine?  They put people in jail for breaking laws much less inconsequential than this - this particular lawbreaking is causing loss of income and/or grief to millions of people.

Meringue
3 egg whites, at room temperature
6 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
Beat the egg whites at high speed with an electric mixer until soft peaks form. With mixer running, add the cream of tartar, then gradually add the sugar, a tablespoon at a time, and beat until stiff peaks form. Beat in the vanilla.

Mayor Bloomberg was on the radio this morning saying that the Taylor law imposes a fine of two days pay for each strike day against each and every striker.  I don't blame the workers themselves because the majority of them are just puppets that are being forced into a strike that they can ill afford by the union leaders who are just trying to be big shots.  The union leaders of course are living large on the the double moeny they get as salaried employees of the MTA while also collecting salaries as union officials and of course they have all the pension and health benefits
of the rank and file

These peopel should trying living in the real world wher people don't have safety nets like pension plans

What about the wrongful death suit filed by its relatives?

THANKS!!  I was using Martha Stewart's recipe for Swiss Meringue, I had to cook it first.  If I get brave, I'll try yours.  It's actually a recipe for Chocolate Meringue cookies.

Just got off the phone with a friend of mine, another future social worker.  She's also concerned about getting to her internship tomorrow.  She works with recovering drug and alcohol addicts... tis already the season to relapse, so what is going to happen if they are stranded at home unable to work or get to treatment.

I never like situations where the needs/wants of one group of people are put ahead and are at the expense of the needs of many, many others.

I also hate not being able to work.  I almost never take sick days and when I do I usually feel guilty and end up doing housework so that I can feel useful.

I went to the gym this morning and that made me feel better, but only for a little while.  Now I'm eating christmas cookies to see if that helps.

So, instead of the chocolate meringue cookies, I have two other thoughts... Chocolate-Black Pepper Cookies, or Chocolate Orange EspressonThins.  These are all out of Martha's Holiday Cookie magazine

By the way it looks in the picture, it's rather large granuals of sugar.  Coarse Sanding Sugar, it says... leave it to Martha to think we all know what some of these ingredients are!

Actually. I believe it is that colored sugar that you get in the baking aisle that you use to sprinkle on top of cookies and cakes and cupcakes and such for decoration
