Wow DR RonP that sounds horrible!  Hope you're feeling better.

And good health vibes to DRs Cillaliz and Vixmom!

DR MATTH - I always have the same reaction to the Dunne-Harrison ANNA AND THE KING.  I love the R/H score, but the story is just as well told without it, particularly in the hands of those in the 1946 version.

Instead of applause, the audience stands up and raises their hands in the air, then sits down again.  They usually do this starting from the right hand side of the auditorium, and heading left, but on occasion they do it from left to right.  It's particularly spectacular when it happend at theater in the round.

Seriously,Ron,  you should get that looked at right away, now I am going to be sitting over here worrying about what you are breathing in.

Do you have asthma as well as severe allergies?

Do you have plans for a move soon that I missed?
(You mentioned your landlady needing to fix something after you move out)

I Googled this and found part of a discussion.  Someone named Brian Lemming added this:

" Here in L.A. we call it 'Equity Waiver' theater. The union Actors Equity allows its members to participate in plays in 99-seat theaters for token payments--gas money, basically, for each performance.

"This system has resulted in a hell of a lot of great theater. (And a play I co-wrote, 'Bat Boy: The Musical', came out of this system--and resulted in high-paying New York performances for two Equity members of the original cast.)

"The Equity Waiver system has also created many more opportunities for actors to practice their craft in front of audiences than would otherwise have existed. It's a great system--and it would be a great disservice to their members if Actors Equity were not to have it. It's good for everybody--playwrights, directors, theaters, audiences."

Thank you that was very helpful.. Is an Equity Showcase the same thing FJL or do Equity rules apply?

I just popped in before going to work to say:

And Vixmom, a few times, I've mentioned The Barra MacNeils since seeing a tape of them on New Year's Eve.  If you haven't checked out their website yet (they have full-length songs to listen to), you should!  I think you'll like them. ;D

DR Jennifer:  Yes, thank you, I'm feeling much better.

DR Vixmom:  Well, I am using the Combivent inhaler.  Have been doing so for a year.  My doctor told me it is not uncommon for adults to acquire a touch of asthma, especially when they have allergy issues.  So...I have a touch, I suppose.

I am not planning on moving any time within the next two years.  Unless I'm forced to for health reasons.

I'm not going to worry about repairing the ceiling, but I may take corrective measures regarding removal of some of the afflicted textured portions of same.

Thanks!  Yes it looks like a group we would enjoy.    Looking at their tour info  I see that they were in my SIL & MIL's town in November & December and will be in my niece's town in March... (her birthday is in April  I wonder if I should get her tickets.)  I am going to see if my SIL can pick up a copy of the latest CD for me locally.

I got my new/used DVD of THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO! yesterday.  And while the extras don't have a lot of information, it was nice to hear Sylvia Anderson talk about the production.

The director also explained Technirama in this way (and it was demonstrated).

Technirama exposed the scene on only the bottom half of the 35mm film....then in the lab it was stretched to fill the frame and squeezed - then a lens was used to stretch it to widescreen when it was projected.

Something I didn't know....hmmmm...interesting.

Question for Ask Bk Day -

Is "waiver" theater in L.A. (or anywhere else for that matter) different from the "Equity showcase" code in New York?

As someone has already posted, waiver theater is an Equity thing in LA that allows actors to participate in a play for no remuneration as long as the theater seats ninety-nine or less.  They receive seven dollars a day as a stipend (this only recently).  In terms of rehearsal time and breaks, Equity rules apply, although few follow them (we do).

Waiver theater, of course, started out as one thing and has mostly evolved into something else.  It used to be that one could produce waiver theater for almost no money -- that's what it was supposed to be about.  Then certain theaters and producers began to realize they could do productions with stars or known people for a fraction of the cost in a regular theater, and so these fairly grandiose waiver theater productions began happening.  They, of course, made other waiver theater productions look poor, so the bar got raised and suddenly everyone had to spend more to not look cheap.  And up it went until waiver theater's costs of production are outrageous, what with sets, ads, publicity, and most of all, theater rental.

One of the prime offenders was the Tiffany Theater, a beautiful two-theater waiver space that was as expensive as any small above 99 seat theater (like the 300 seat Coronet).  They charged more than anyone for theater rental, you had a prime Sunset Blvd. marquee, and we had plays like Bermuda Avenue Triangle with Bea Arthur in a 99 seat theater.

So, the media mis-reported about the mine deaths, did they?  What exactly is the story on this?  Who did the mis-reporting?

According to the news what happened is that as they were going into the mine, someone yelled out that they had found them and they needed to check vital signs. Someone overheard this, presumed they were alive and word spread like wildfire.

In other words, just like the movie Fury.  Someone hears something, passes it on, it's mis-heard, mis-interpreted, and ends up completely opposite from what it began.  Nothing changes.

I don't think it was the media's fault.

The thing that is making everyone furious is that it took them over 3 hours to tell the families the truth (when they seemingly knew well before then).

It seems that it is the coal mine company that the families are mad at.

They either had a bad radio connection or someone misunderstood that the miners were alive.  But the thing I don't get is why spread the word until they were sure.

Many of the families went to bed thinking their loved one was alive, only to be shocked in the morning.

Thunderbirds was good, but my favorite was Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons.

And here is a photo of Captain Blue and Captain Scarlet:
