So....my first question for ASK BK day:

What were your favorite Comic Book Villains?

I wasn't that in to comic books (except MAD), but I liked that one from Superman, the one with all the letters Mr. Mxyplyk or whatever it was.

For ask BK day:

BK, what is your opinion of the following 3 people as singers, and if they were available to appear in one of your shows what would you want them to sing?

Martha Tilton

Keith Andes

Yvonne De Carlo

I only recently discovered Martha Tilton, and I really like her vocal stylings and the film I saw her in (can't remember the title) - I bought a couple of CDs.  Love Keith Andes' voice in Wildcat, but that's all I really know of him.  Yvonne was always fun and, of course, I love her I'm Still Here.

Don't really know how to answer the rest of the question - I shall think on it.

DR Ginny - Sometimes New York City in the rain can a most wonderful thing.  It actually makes you go inside all those buildings you normally just admire from the outside.

Have a wonderful day!  -And if you can get back to Sarabeth's for Breakfast/Brunch... Highly recommended.  They have great oatmeal!

I hope no one minds my shilling for a friend, but just wanted to put in a plug for Dear Friend Milla's encore performance of her truly wonderful cabaret show.  Skip called it one of the best cabaret shows he's ever seen.  This is her press release - the press release a little suggestive (and has a few arguably "single-entendres" :)  ) but it's really a wonderful show.

CABARET COURTESAN SEDUCES IN ONE-NIGHT STAND

NIGHTLIFE AWARD FINALIST MILLA ILIEVA
BRINGS HER CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED NEW SHOW
"SO MANY NIGHTS, SO MANY MEN" TO DANNY'S ON VALENTINE'S DAY

Jazz/cabaret sensation Milla Ilieva, a 2006 Nightlife Award finalist (for best female vocalist), brings her critically acclaimed new show "So Many Nights, So Many Men" to Danny's Skylight Room Cabaret, 346 West 46th Street, for a special one-night stand on Valentine's Day, Tuesday February 14 at 7pm. A style-spanning romantic round robin of songs about love -- many rarely heard and some that will knock your clothes off -- "So Many Nights, So Many Men" mixes Broadway ballads, rediscovered theatre comic curios, and a bon bon sampler from the American popular songbook.

"So Many Nights, So Many Men," featuring musical director Paul Trueblood on piano, and directed by Margery Beddow, was called "a saucy new show… a particularly well-crafted act" by the Siegels of TheaterMania.com when it premiered at The Encore in October. Piling on were Peter Filichia (also of TheaterMania.com) who wrote "those planning cabaret acts should be given a conference with Milla Ilieva." Writing in America Oggi, Mario Fratti oozed that "the sexy Milla Ilieva delights us with impassioned and sometimes erotic songs." David Finkle, writing in Backstage.com, claimed that Ilieva "wins hands-down… with effortless effort."

A multifaceted vocalist, Ilieva is as comfortable performing standards as she is singing opera and country western. A five-time bride-to-be (and proud of it!), Ilieva's colorful upbringing includes her formative years as a country girl in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, stints learning the trade at the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins and the Académie Ravel in France, followed by more years of servitude in New York where she was further groomed at The Juilliard School's Professional Studies Program. She is proud of her Russian heritage, and counts among her ancestors a general in the Czar's Imperial Guards (who was not, in the interest of accuracy, a Cossack.)

In "So Many Nights, So Many Men" Ilieva lampoons her apparently insatiable appetite for love as she jumps from songs by composers as varied as Rimsky-Korsakov, Vernon Duke, Jule Styne, Ray Jessel, Harold Arlen, Sondheim, Kander & Ebb, Jacques Urbont, Lionel Bart and Arthur Schwartz. Singing of love's heartbreak, loss, excess, quixotic optimism, and out-and-out-decadence, she wraps the whole affair in dazzling packages that show off her vocal mastery, emotional range and urbane wit. Among the show's juicier musical morsels are songs from the cult classics "All in Love," "Lock Up Your Daughters," and "The Act."

Come to Mama on Valentine's Day -- Tuesday February 14 at 7pm, at Danny's Skylight Room Cabaret, 346 West 46th Street (between 8th & 9th Avenues). The music charge is $20, with a $12 food and drink minimum. A special prix fixe Valentine's Day menu is available for dinner before or after the show. All major credit cards accepted. For reservations call (212) 265-8133.

Hmmm... Questions....

BK, What has been your most rewarding experience in your long list of accomplishments?

What has been your funniest experience?

Writing the Kritzer books, I should think.  Even though I really loved writing Writer's Block and Rewind, the Kritzer books really were special to write and getting through them and then getting them out in the world was very very rewarding, as was the reaction to them.

Funniest experience - so many, too many.  One childhood experience I remember with great fondness (it's recounted in a very different way in the first Kritzer book, I believe - maybe the second, can't remember) is sitting in the Stadium movie theater watching a reissue of The Ten Commandments circa 1959.  I was with my best friend and we got the giggles over something early on in the film, and then we just couldn't stop, and for over three hours we sat there howling at every line and scene of The Ten Commandments, whilst the other members of the audience gave us dirty looks and shushed us - until they caught the giggles from us, and then it was just a communal laugh fest.

Yesterday, DR Matthew asked:

Quote
Dr Jose, be sure and let us West Coast Bay Area people know when you'll be here, perhaps we can have a mini get together.

Well, as of now, here's my schedule - in rough form...

Thursday, January 26:
6:00am (EST) - Leave from Dulles
10:30am (PST) - Arrive in San Francisco
8:00pm (PST) - See Lestat

Friday, January 27:
6:30am (PST) - Leave San Francisco
3:00pm (EST) - Arrive back at Dulles
8:00pm (EST) - Damn Yankees at Arena Stage

Truly a whirlwind trip, but I will have a whole "day" free in San Fran, so...  Any and all suggestions and gatherings would be appreciated.

*And I think the "secret" for the whole trip will be to not reset my watch so that I can keep my "head" on East Coast time.  -I'll just use my cell phone to keep track of the local time.

DR Jason, I believe you have lost some weight, too! You and Jose are going to be our poster boys.

We're planning on doing a calendar.

Well... We'll at least be the photographers... Shots of New York City, the Bronx Zoo, etc... Stuff like that.

Happy Birthday to that Rascally Rogue, Charles Pogue!!!!!!!!

Question for you Pogue, by the way. Are you able to pick up WMKV from Cincy over the airwaves where you live now? I guess you don't need to since they do the netcast, but it could come in handy in the automobile.

Yes, it's a twenty-minute "tab" version of stuff from her full two-act one-woman show - for bookers.  Every cabaret artist does it.

Was it DRFJL who was reading the Bennett book?

Yes, Lois Kibbee had just finished that book when she was contacted by France Farmer to work on her "autobiography" - Lois' (daughter of Roland, niece of Guy) account of their time together is VERY interesting.

Lois was great on THE EDGE OF NIGHT!!
