LOVE, SIDNEY.
I watched the tv show all the time as a kid and never knew the guy was gay until much later. I think they pretty much glossed over that fact.

Talk about great theme songs though!

"Please believe me, lately my whole world is changing..."

Actually maybe that should have clued me in right there.

I don't recall seeing anything in The Drowsy Chaperone that wasn't appropriate for a thirteen year old.

Have done some musical writing (including finishing a lyric), and have proofed and done corrections on one short story.

Slow day at work....

Sad to hear about Maureen Stapleton.  I always thought the WRONG person got the supporting actress Academy Award for AIRPORT.

Stapleton's turn as the put-upon wife of a man who turns out to have a bomb on the plane (Van Heflin) is real and moving...Helen Hayes....not so much.

The customers demand my attention.

We have had LOTS of rain in the past couple of nights.  Some very loud thunder and bright lightening.  It is still gloomy today, but the MOST severe weather seems to have by passed by little corner of the sky.

If I'm not mistaken (and I seldom is), the first totally out gay character on a sitcom was Nancy Walker's assistant on her self-titled show during the 70s.  All I remember about this show was that it was disappointingly unfunny but had a very catchy theme song.

Come to think of it, the first gay character that I can remember must have been the Lee Roy Reams character in APPLAUSE.  Margo Channing wanted to go out to where the gypsies hung out, and he said to Margo, "Margo, I have a date," and Margo said nonchalantly "Well, bring him along."

It wasn't so commonplace in those days to have an out charcater.  So there's the somewhat legendary story of (I believe) Dorothy Collins at North Shore doing the show and not getting her expected small laugh on "Bring him along" and starting to really punch up the joke as in "Well, bring HIIIIIIM along."

Good Afternoon!

I'm just back at my apartment for a very brief stop - I had to come back to fetch a piece of mail that might have come in today.  Alas, it did not come, so, hopefully it will arrive tomorrow.  -Along with some other important mail.  (DRs TPunk, Rodzinksi, Ben and Ant know what I'm talking about. ;))

In any case... It was nice seeing DR elmore in his element, and while we were there I was also able to catch with his office mate, Curtis, who was the composer for the show I did last summer up at Williamstown.

Or could the first gay character I'd seen have been the trite and gay as a daisy in May Nellie Forbush?

I see lots of people on the board just sitting there like so much fish.

I have paid a few bills, packed up some stuff to ship off today, and will now start proofing/fixing story number two.

DR Panni just emailed me and asked me to post this about Maureen Stapleton:

Wonderful woman - terrific actress. The "old" pic they used of her in the Playbill obit was from MISS ROSE WHITE. She was nominated for an Emmy for that (as was I - we both lost).

(MISS ROSE WHITE was DR Panni's screenplay based on the play A SHAYNA MAIDEL by Barbara Lebow.)

I love Dorothy Collins but as Margo Channing??? I'm having a hard time seeing that.

I do remember seeing Applause on television and hearing the line (IIRC or If I Recall Correctly) "well, bring him along" and being slightly shocked (in a good way).

bk, that's my office computer "sitting there like so much fish."  Right now, I'm answering phones and a lady just called to ask the origin of the song "Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive."  Anybody care to answer?

From Wikpedia

"The music was written by Harold Arlen, the lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The song was published in 1944.

Mercer also recorded the song (with The Pied Pipers and Paul Weston's orchestra), as well as the Artie Shaw Orchestra and Bing Crosby with The Andrews Sisters.

The Johnny Mercer recording was recorded on October 4, 1944, and released by Capitol Records as catalog number 180. The record first reached the Billboard magazine charts on January 4, 1945 and lasted 13 weeks on the chart, peaking at #2.

The Bing Crosby/Andrews Sisters recording was recorded on December 8, 1944, and released by Decca Records as catalog number 23379. The record first reached the Billboard magazine charts on January 25, 1945 and lasted 9 weeks on the chart, peaking at #2.

The Artie Shaw recording was released by RCA Victor Records as catalog number 20-1612. The record first reached the Billboard magazine charts on January 25, 1945 and lasted 5 weeks on the chart, peaking at #5.

Another version was recorded by Johnny Green in the United Kingdom on April 6, 1945, and released by Parlophone Records as catalog number F-2069. Soul Great Sam Cooke recorded it for his "Encore" album.

The song has twice been recorded by Perry Como: once on February 19, 1958 and later in July, 1980. Both were primarily made for albums. Neither version was released as a single in the United States, though the 1958 version was released in Germany by RCA as a 45rpm single (catalog number 47-9243-A)"

It was featured in Here Come the Waves with Bing Crosby and Betty Hutton. And of course, the venerable Sonny Tufts (a name to remember for Initials)

A question for Tom of Oz. I see by my calendar that it is Eight Hour Day in Tasmania. What is Eight Hour Day?

It's also Labour Day in Victoria and next Monday it will be Canberra Day.
