What do you say to an angry 300-pound baked potato?

Anything, just butter him up.

Why wouldn't the reporter leave the mashed potatoes alone?

He desperately wanted a scoop.

When I was in England some years ago, they kept running a vacuum cleaner commercial on the TV which had me in hysterics the first time I heard it:

"Nothing sucks like an Electrolux!!"

Too funny!

Now I do remember an old Civil War song

Sitting by the roadside on a summer's day
Chatting with my mess-mates, passing time away
Lying in the shadows underneath the trees
Goodness, how delicious, eating goober peas.

Peas, peas, peas, peas
Eating goober peas
Goodness, how delicious,
Eating goober peas.

When a horse-man passes, the soldiers have a rule
To cry out their loudest, "Mister, here's your mule!"
But another custom, enchanting-er than these
Is wearing out your grinders, eating goober peas.

Peas, peas, peas, peas
Eating goober peas
Goodness, how delicious,
Eating goober peas.

Just before the battle, the General hears a row
He says "The Yanks are coming, I hear their rifles now."
He looks down the roadway, and what d'ya think he sees?
The Georgia Militia cracking goober peas.

Peas, peas, peas, peas
Eating goober peas
Goodness, how delicious,
Eating goober peas.

I think my song has lasted just about enough.
The subject is interesting, but the rhymes are mighty rough.
I wish the war was over, so free from rags and fleas
We'd kiss our wives and sweethearts, say good-bye to goober peas.

Peas, peas, peas, peas
Eating goober peas
Goodness, how delicious,
Eating goober peas.

I am playing Gene Pitney in honour of one of the great voices of Rock and Roll.  Question to all:  What's your favourite Pitney song...?  Mine is Every Breath I Take.

Re: last week's episode of "Smallville"

I watched this episode Monday evening...and....

SPOILER, possibly...

...it wasn't among my favorites.   While the show is always watchable, this story arc seemed too convoluted just to get to a point at which Clark could break off his strange relationship with Lana.

And good for Lana...may she live long and prosper.

As I wrote last Thursday after I saw the episode, Clark and Lana have broken up "for good" three or four times during the show's years on the air. I hope this time it's for keeps. I'm certainly all for it, and knowing the Superman legend, we know he doesn't end up with her as an adult, so it makes sense that this is happening since Tom Welling is rapidly getting to the place where it's going to be ludicrous for him to be playing a teenager.

I love Pitney's Only Love Can Break A Heart by Bacharach and David, and the above-mentioned Town Without Pity and Liberty Valance.

I'm feeling a bit less blue, more of a light purple now.  However, I'm so tired I can't even see straight, which is what happens when you sleep one hour.

I remember my brother had some Gene Pitney 45s, and I thought he was very sexy looking on the cover of his albums. I've heard "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" and "Town Without Pity," but they not the one my brother played all the time. I can't remember which song it was he'd repeat over and again.

Back from lunch...at Milano's a local Italian ristorante.

My lunch special:

Grilled lamb, onions, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes cooked in a fused garlic-olive oil and served over orzo.

Absolutely TDF!

Naturally because I was anticipating it, the mail was very late today, so I began the afternoon viewing with a MURDER SHE WROTE episode I hadn't seen before. One with Arthur Hill playing the same role that he played in the pilot episode (Jessica's publisher) and also featuring Michael McKean, Lois Chiles, and Gordon Thomson, among other guests.

Next came two ANGEL episodes to finish out disc 4 in the Season 3 set. Both very enjoyable as Angel and Wesley both wrestle with jealousy over not having the girls of their dreams. And, of course, Wesley's alligning himself with Angel's adversary in order to save the child Connor is also happening now.

Well, at least he's out of high school, even though he's dropped out of college for the time being.

With Martha serving Jonathan's senate term, I guess Clark plans on keeping the farm going for a while until such time as they can afford to hire someone to work it.

The legend is really getting a bit strained with Chloe working at the Planet...and Lois doing gosh only knows what.  I'm never quite sure what her status is.

They have a nice competitive chemistry working between Clark and Lois, but there doesn't seem to be any kind of romantic spark in the offing.

I'm excited about the upcoming "Dynasty" reunion show....not the least because Pamela Sue Martin** will be back as Fallon and Al Corley will be back as Steven.

I understand John Forsythe is on board as Blake, but he's not doing interviews.

Finally the mail came, and I plucked BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN out of its case and put it on.

When I saw the film in the theater, the theater had a very used and dirty print; it even had some places where a frame or two were missing. So, watching it on DVD is the first time I've gotten to see it in a prisitine copy.

The cinematography is as breathtaking as I imagined it would be, and the disc is very sharp. However, the night scene where Ennis and Jack "discover" each other for the first time is way too dark to watch in a room with any ambient light, so I shut off the player and will pick back up with the film tonight when there won't be any light coming into the den.

And with Chloe knowing the secret, well, I just don't know where all of that is going. I still keep thinking Chloe will take Lois' name as her by-line and that SHE is the Lois Lane that Clark flips for as an adult. Of course, Lois in the comics wasn't blonde.

I started watching ANGEL on the WB about four or five episodes from the end of its fourth season, so I still have the rest of Season 3 and about 18 episodes of Season 4 that will be new to me. Can't wait to see how these storylines play out, especially with Connor aging so quickly in the subsequent seasons.

Question for BK (and all):

What's your favorite advertising jingle?

The Manhattan Transfer singing the diet Coke song.  I must admit that I do prefer diet Pepsi, but I love TMT, so I loved the commercial. ;D

I see that BATTLESTAR GALACTICA has won a George Foster Peabody Award for excellence in television. I know that will make you happy, DR Ron.

Or are there other sci-fi shows that you champion more? STARGATE, right?

That reminds me of the fun I had with last week's episode of "Supernatural"....those two nerds who ran the website in that possessed house bickering about "WWBD" -- "what would Buffy do?"
