Glad to hear the positive news about your dad, Elmore. We'll keep him in our prayers for another good five years!

The young man at our church has a broken pelvis. I will go to see him this afternoon.

High and Low is my favorite Kurosawa film, and probably one of my top ten of all time.  It is perfection - it's long, but feels like it's an hour instead of two-and-a-half.  The Criterion is decent, but the Japanese disc, which is anamorphic, is the best (unfortunately, no subs), and the BFI from the UK is excellent (anamorphic and subs) - those are for multi-region players only, of course.

Let us know what you think.

I've been packaging orders all morning, and I'll venture over to the post office around three, I think.  Footlight has now reordered the STAGE CD six times in two-and-a-half weeks, and they've sold well over 100 copies online.

Are We Safe?

In a two-day period in March, alarming reports revealed that "dirty (radiation) bombs" easily entered the country in car trunks in tests, that one-third of U.S. civilian nuclear research reactors were insufficiently secure, and that concerns were heightened about the 2,000 shoulder-fired missiles said to be unaccounted for in the world's arsenals.

On the other hand, the Los Angeles Times reported that the fishing village of Dillingham, Alaska, at least, is secure, now that a $200,000 Homeland Security anti-terrorism grant has paid for 60 "downtown" surveillance cameras (with 20 more to come).

Dillingham (pop. 2,400) is about 300 miles from Anchorage, with no roads linking it to anywhere.

The Christian Diocese of Mizoram in northeast India, which was established by Welsh Presbyterian missionaries who worked the area from 1840 to around 1960, announced in March that it would send a missionary back to Wales because it was clear that the Welsh are in serious spiritual decline. "The Mizos," said Rev. Zosang Colney, "have a burden to do something for their Mother Church in Wales," since fewer than 1 in 10 Welsh regularly attend services. [Daily Telegraph (London), 3-6-06]

Outstanding Police Work:

(1) A 40-year-old man in Cedarburg, Wis., was arrested on suspicion of DUI when police noticed the severed hose of a gas station pump sticking out of his car's fuel door. (It belonged to a Kwik Trip station.)

(2) Daniel Nordell, 52, with a history of DUI, was arrested in March when police saw him driving through downtown Waupaca, Wis., in reverse (because he said the other gears wouldn't work).
[Post-Crescent (Appleton, Wis.), 3-3-06]

(3) A 44-year-old man was arrested for DUI in Australia's Northern Territory in March after he asked a police officer how to get to the hard-to-miss Uluru (Ayers Rock, the huge, 1,000-foot-high rock formation that appears red in sunlight), which was about 300 feet in front of him, illuminated in his headlights.   [Reuters, 3-29-06]

Brian Blair is now a Republican county commissioner in Tampa, Fla., but before that was a professional wrestler for 20 years.

He now says it wasn't the dropkicks, pile drivers or neck breakers that ended his career, but rather tripping over a tray of dirty dishes at a Carrabba's Italian Grill in Tampa in 2001, which he said injured his head, shoulder and knee, and his lawsuit is still pending.
(His previous lawyers resigned in March.)

Blair wrestled for four months after that injury, but said the matches were the less-strenuous "tag-team" contests.

Also, hospital records show a blood-alcohol reading of 0.089 90 minutes after the incident, though Blair told the Tampa Tribune he only had a sip. [Tampa Tribune, 3-9-06]

I bought ONE DR MBARNUM....the discussed HIGH AND LOW...and I almost bought another Samarai movie with Mr Mifune - but decided to opt for the HOFFMAN which I think some DR's here have praised.

I came close to buying THE TALES OF HOFFMAN, but I let it slide again. I bought more than I probably needed to as is. Besides, it's great to have some things to anticipate later.

I finished CAPOTE again today. It is very hard to watch the reenactment of the Clutter murders as Perry recounts them.

Next up was BLONDE VENUS. Hard for me to decide which of Dietrich's 30s movies I like the most, but this and SCARLET EMPRESS are probably neck and neck for me. Just love her songs in BLONDE VENUS, especially "I Couldn't Be Annoyed."

The transfer looks fine, and it's sharp enough that for the first time, I was able to see the runs in her stockings once things start to go bad for Helen Faraday.

The biggest disappointment of the afternoon was THE YELLOW ROLLS-ROYCE. I thought I'd watch about twenty minutes of it to see how the transfer looked.

Well, it looked just fine, nice and sharp and colorful until the crerdits were over, and then it reverted to a pan and scan monstrosity! I was very surprised as Turner doesn't usually show films pan and scan that are originally shot in Panavision, and I have every intention of going to the website and complaining about it.

So, I'll have to do without the film on DVD a while longer.

Mostly what I remember about THE YELLOW ROLLS ROYCE was a huge four page fold out ad in Life Magazine.....

It certainly made the movie look better than it was when I went to see it...but then I went to see it, so the ad served its purpose.

I almost bought two B/W Japanese movies, but decided to go with one HIGH AND LOW and a color spectacular TALES OF HOFFMAN.  I am sure I don't own either of those.

DRJRand55, the Offenbach TALES OF HOFFMANN looks spectaculat, and it's such a bizarre but wonderful film.  As a staging on the Offenbach opera, I prefer John Schlesinger's production from covent Garden with Domingo, but the visuals of the Powell film are really gorgeous.  I see that THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY, which I have on a Criterion disc, is now released on another label; if this means it's going out of print from Criterion, there might be some inexpensive remaindered DVDs available, and it's a wonderful film, a bit like a Cockney SOPRANOS.

Don't you hate that when you buy a DVD that you already have!

Which reminds me...JRand, you will be having a few things coming to you in the mail very soon! LOL!

How about buying a vinyl album for something that you forgot that you had on CD??  Talk about dumb! ;)
