WELCOMING JUNE WITH OPEN ARMS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, may I just point out that it is June, June, June (that is three Junes)? Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, it is June, and I, for one, welcome June with open arms. Have you ever welcomed June with open arms? I have, and it’s quite pleasant. Certainly more pleasant than welcoming June with closed arms. In any case, I welcome June with open arms and I will hold June close to my bosom, which is no mean feat considering the size of June’s bosom. June has a large bosom, in fact, and it’s what makes the month stand out. I no longer have a clew as to what the HELL I’m going on about, but why should that stop me? June heralds the beginning of summer. June is never a bummer. June is a comer, so hire a drummer and a guitar strummer and maybe a plumber, because June is a time of merriment and mirth and laughter and legs, not necessarily in that order. Here’s hoping we all have a wonderfully healthy and happy and successful June, filled with wondrous surprises and positive goings-on. But, before I get to June, perhaps I’ll tell you about the last day of May. I got a few things done in the morning, then had a working lunch with Miss Tammy Minoff, then went to Vinnie’s to implement one major change on the Guy Haines album (about which more in a minute), then came home, then had to run out to a late supper and conversation, both of which turned out to be more pleasant than I thought they’d be. The major change in the Guy album had to do with reverb. I’ve been living with our mix for some weeks now, and something about it has just been bugging me every time I listen to it. It wasn’t the actual mixes, which I thought were great. When we did the After the Ball recording in New York, New York, Vinnie used a reverb box that we used to use all the time, and the settings were the same he’d used for mostly all our albums (the reverb is just for monitoring purposes when recording – everything actually records flat with no reverb – we then add it back when we mix). The minute I heard that reverb I said, “That’s what’s been bugging me – this ‘verb is what I love and remember. Much more open and real-sounding.” So, I had him rent the reverb unit for the After the Ball mix. Then, we did a test, and put it on one of the Guy Haines numbers, and boy did I love it. So, yesterday, we changed the vocal reverb on all the tracks but two, and I am so much happier now – it sounds just the way I like now. We tweaked three little things on the After the Ball mix, and now both albums are done and ready to be mastered. Hoo and ray.

As I’ve already stated, June will be a very busy and interesting month around these here parts. Lots of potential things in the ether, all of which we hope will come to fruition, oh, yes, we hope they will all come to fruition. Have you ever come to fruition? Was fruition happy about it? Frankly, fruition is just a little uppity sometimes and needs to be knocked down a peg or two or even a gertrude or two.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because June is already on its merry way and we must not fall behind, oh, no, we must not fall behind.

I have been having an affair, dear readers. Yes, Virginia, you heard that right – I have been having an affair and I say so defiantly and proudly, not necessarily in that order. I have been having an affair with fruit bars – you know, fruit-flavored popsicle-type thingees. My current favorite is the cantaloupe flavor fruit bar. I just can’t get enough of them. First of all, there is virtually no fat grams, and second of all, they are only fifty calories per fruit bar. In fact, I have become quite addicted to the cantaloupe-flavored fruit bar. I think it’s safe to say that I have a cantaloupe-flavored fruit bar on my back. I may have to have one right this very minute.

Ah, I am now having a cantaloupe-flavored fruit bar – my fix. Have you ever had an affair with a fruit bar? It’s quite lovely, really. I think Noel Coward wrote a song about it once.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must write, I must organize, I must do proposals, I must look into things, I must pick up my final proof copies of the Guy Haines and After the Ball CDs from Vinnie, and I must eat nothing but cantaloupe-flavored fruit bars. Today’s topic of discussion: When you were a mere sprig of a twig of a tad of a lad of a youth, what were your favorite ice cream treats – the ones you’d get from the Good Humor Man or that you’d make your mother buy. I used to love Fudgesicles, and I also loved those ice cream cones with the nuts and chocolate over vanilla (I never remember the name of them), also loved Creamsicles, and, at the movies, Bon Bons. Your turn. And when you talk about your favorite ice cream treats – and you will – let’s have lots of detail and description, please. Let’s also have loads of lovely postings as we welcome June with open arms.
