EVERYBODY SAYS DO

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, in breaking news I have discovered some rather surprising news, i.e. it is the very day of Christmas Eve. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, Christmas Eve has arrived and while not a creature is stirring not even a mouse, I shall be stirring spaghetti sauce all the livelong day until my annual Christmas Do begins at six. I have no idea who is coming, how many are coming or if anyone is coming, so I shall be surprised as I am every year. I shall be posting all the livelong day, telling you dear readers of my progress. And then, I shall be posting live from the actual Christmas Do. So, come one, come all – if you’re here at haineshisway.com, then it will be just like being at the Christmas Eve Do. I had a rather okay day yesterday – meeting up with Mr. Nick Redman to pick up his eBay item – the William Holden hat from The Wild Bunch. It’s pretty spiffy-looking, and I can only say that Mr. Nick Redman got the deal of the year. We then lunched at the Santa Monica branch of El Cholo, a very famous LA Mexican restaurant. I must say, I did not find the meal a patch on the butt cheeks of my beloved Casa Vega in nearby Sherman Oaks. I then headed back to the Valley – the traffic was horrendous everywhere – streets, freeways, you name it, it was horrendous. I did some things around the home environment, made several important telephonic calls, and then went off to rehearsals. I actually went a bit early so I could have a Dairy Queen soft vanilla cone, which was quite yummilicious. Some parts of rehearsal went very well, and some parts didn’t – but the actor I had to have a conversation with yesterday began finding his way last night, so that was heartening. We’ll see how much of the stuff that worked is retained. That’s the trick, of course – to retain the stuff that works. Otherwise, we’re in that difficult place where people are getting off book, and fumfering lines or doing wrong words in lines, and forgetting the acting part. Hopefully, that will pass quickly and they’ll get it all down so we can get back to the business of honing the performances. After rehearsal, I came home, sat on my couch like so much fish, and made some buttered popcorn to snack on.

I’m quite excited about my Christmas Do. I only cook my famous spaghetti once a year, and I’m quite looking forward to it. I’ll also be making my famous tuna pasta salad, and I have deliciously delicious fudge thanks to dear reader Jane, and I have some other goodies thanks to cousin Dee Dee. I still have to go buy the rolls, but I wanted them to be fresh, so I’ll be going over to Gelson’s first thing this morning. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

I do hope all you hainsies/kimlets will be around all the livelong day and night for our Christmas Eve do. It will be ever so cozy and toasty and we will have ever so much fun, rather like a gazelle in spandex pants and stiletto heels. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because shortly I must put on my chef’s hat and begin preparations for our lavishly lavish feast.

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring except BK, the louse. He is stirring and stirring to make his sauce great – and then he will eat it whilst staying up late.

I’m quite looking forward to Mr. Santa Claus coming down one of my two chimneys. I, of course, will be fast asleep in the bedroom environment when Mr. Claus pays his visit. I have tried to be a good boy all year – I’m afraid I’ve probably failed occasionally, but I do know that I’ve done some things that were positive, so there’s that.

Last night at rehearsal, we had a new assistant helping out until my regular assistant returns just after the first of the year. I was very heartened that she was quite taken with the play and its machinations. That gives me a bit of hope, which is nice, since I’m in that place where I don’t think much of anything about the play is working.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, chop garlic (and plenty of it), I must dice onions, I must slice mushrooms, I must prepare my secret ingredients for the sauce, which no human eye has ever seen, I must cook noodles for the tuna pasta salad, I must organize the house for the Christmas Eve Do, and it shall be quite a full day of doing this and doing that and also doing that and doing this. Today’s topic of discussion: Do you have a favorite Christmas Eve memory? Tell us your favorite Christmas Eve memories, both from childhood and adulthood. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst we sing Mr. Stephen Sondheim’s song that he wrote about my Christmas Do –

Everybody says Do
Everybody says Do
Everybody says that’s the place to be
When it’s Christmas Eve

Everybody says Do
Everybody says Do
Everybody says Santa will appear
That’s if you believe

And so forth and so on and also so on and so forth.
