January 5, 2007:

A LITANY OF THINGS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, here it is, the first Friday of the New Year and I must say this week has flown by like a gazelle with herpes. It doesn’t even seem like a Friday and yet it is a Friday, so there you are. Nothing like jumping into the New Year whole hog – this has been an incredibly busy week, and it’s not over, as I have to work both tomorrow and Sunday for a few hours. But, basically it was a good start to the year, and I’m much happier being busy than not busy. I started a new book, I began rehearsals for the interactive kids show (The Party Animals – Live!), I recorded the Brain vocals, and I began mixing the Brain CD. I also began writing the liner notes for the Brain CD, as well as the liner notes for The Creature Wasn’t Nice soundtrack CD (my fault – I should have written them weeks and weeks ago, but kept putting it off). Not only that, I had to put titles to all the Creature music cues. I’m still not finished gathering material, and I’ll be doing some of that this very day. Speaking of this very day, yesterday was a very day. For example, I woke up early and had to deal with an emergency situation involving our payroll service in New York, who, after sitting on our paperwork (for a Rupert Holmes project that I’m processing through Kritzerland as a favor to Rupert) for two days informed us that they cannot do this job. The reason the woman gave was that their service is not a signator to AFTRA, which is a bald-faced lie since they processed the payroll for the After The Ball cast album – which was an AFTRA gig. In any case, I spent the next two hours trying to find a new payroll service, which I did here in LA (and they’re almost five percent cheaper), the paperwork was overnighted to them and they should have it this morning. They’ve promised me they’ll turn it around by the afternoon, which is great. I then spent the next hour packaging up CDs, then going first to Fed Ex and then to the postal office to ship them. By that time, it was too late to jog, and I toddled off to visit rehearsal, and then toddled off to finesse mixes.

The first three mixes I heard were a little problematic in terms of the blends, but we worked on them and got them right and they sounded great. Because they took a little more work than usual, I’m sure I’ll still finesse them a bit more after I’ve heard them. But, by the fourth song, Vinnie had gotten up to speed and I had to do very little on the subsequent three songs – the mixes were very close and all I did was a little thisa and a little thata, with an emphasis on the latter. It’s going to be a fine-sounding CD and the performances are all coming through really well. I left Vinnie’s at six and then grabbed a bite to eat, then finally came home, where I sat in front of my laptop like so much fish.

After catching up with posts on this here site, I finished writing the liner notes for The Creature Wasn’t Nice (I’ll polish them tomorrow morning, and then I gave track titles to all the music cues, and got that out of the way. I was way too tired to even attempt watching a motion picture on DVD.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’ve got a lot of stuff to do today and I must get my beauty sleep so I can greet the day with a smile and a laugh and a song, not necessarily in that order.

This morning I’ll be going to the Colony Theatre to check out the space again – I’ll be joined by our choreographer and our producers. Directly after that, I’ll go to rehearsal, and we’ll do a read-through of the script, after which I’ll turn the rehearsal over to the choreographer, and I’ll be on my way to Vinnie’s to finesse however many mixes he’s finished. We also have to replace yet another synth part I’m not happy with – most of the synth stuff sounds great, but a couple of patches and the playing of a couple of things just wasn’t smooth and we’ve been fixing those as we go along. After the mix, I have to have dinner with the boys who are producing the Creature CD, so I can turn over the notes, track titles, some art, and other stuff they’ll need. They’re putting this on the fast track and I’ll keep you posted as to when it will be out and how you can purchase it (it will be a limited edition). And then I shall come home and sit on my couch like so much fish and watch a DVD.

Tomorrow I have our first blocking rehearsal, and Sunday I’m working with Miss Joan Ryan – but I have plenty of hours free and I should be able to get some other things done and even get some writing in.

These here notes have turned into a litany of things, haven’t they? A laundry list, that’s what we’ve got here. Speaking of a laundry list, I’ve got to take some clothes to the dry cleaners, post haste. I’m just too tired to do any other kind of notes – but tomorrow, tomorrow you’ll get another kind of notes – an invigorated and breezy notes, filled with invigoration and breeziness. Yes, tomorrow is another day, just in case you didn’t know.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, arise, jog (I hope), visit the Colony Theatre, do a read-through, mix, meet, and eat. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player, and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, I’m working my way through all the Academy promo soundtrack CDs I’ve accumulated – I must say, it’s a sorry bunch of music, each score more boring than the last. DVD, both players have Hammer Noirs in them, and after that it will be Powell and Pressburger’s I Know Where I’m Going. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we?
