THE SAVAGE BREAST

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, did you know that music has charms to sooth a savage breast? First of all, what the HELL is a savage breast? I’ve seen a few breasts in my time and none of them have been savage, nor has music soothed said breasts. Certainly music has never soothed my boobs, savage or otherwise. Did you also know that that quote is often MIS-quoted as the savage beast? Frankly, if I have a choice between a savage breast and a savage beast, I’ll take the breast any day of the week, even Wednesdays, which, of course, is today. What the HELL am I talking about? Why am I going on about music soothing savage boobs anyway? Oh, yes, I remember – I was listening to Johnny Mandel’s fabulously fabulous score to The Americanization of Emily and the music was so gorgeous it was actually soothing my savage breast. Score one for Mandel. Speaking of Mandel, yesterday was a very tiring day. I spent a somewhat sleepless night wrestling with a problem I was going to have to deal with, which had to do with some shocking revelations. But, I had no time to dwell on such things because I got up, did my morning ablutions, had hot EmergenC, sucked a couple of Coldeez and headed over to Mr. Grant Geissman’s home environment at noon. I was feeling a bit better, but my voice was fairly trashed – why is anyone’s guess – I hadn’t been doing a lot of talking or anything. I spent four hours laying down the piano tracks for the Nudie Musical demo. As we were doing so, I decided that I didn’t need to do two songs – one we can take from our previous demo, as nothing has changed, and one, Honey, Whatcha Doin’ Tonight I’ll use from the soundtrack, since I don’t really want to have to sing that particular song. Grant was patient and I think everything came out all right. I’m an okay piano player for my own stuff, but I get very ham-fisted when I know it’s being recorded. After we finished, I went and picked up a few packages, and then came home. I had a couple of pieces of toast, and printed out a lot of orders for the new Kritzerland CD. If any of our lurkers missed the announcement, our latest title is up for preorder at www.kritzerland.com and it’s moving pretty quickly. I then picked up the Nudie Musical scripts and then had the conversation I needed to have, which did what I needed it to do. I then finally got something to eat and I ate it all up. It was, of course, too late to sit on my couch like so much fish, and I wasn’t really in the mood to watch a motion picture anyway, so I just played Johnny Mandel’s Emily (the original soundtrack just released on CD as part of a Mandel box set), which soothed both the savage breast and the savage beast and also the savage nostril.

I also heard some of the new upcoming Kritzerland soundtrack CD release – it’s going to be a challenge putting it together as there is a LOT of music to go through (twelve reels of tape in all). At the time the film came out, an album master was prepared but never released. That’s the first thing I listened to – it’s a little peculiar, some in mono, some in stereo, but the music is wonderful, but not well sequenced. Then I listened to about thirty tracks of outtakes – stuff I guess they considered using but didn’t. Some of those tracks are too short and pointless to use, but several of them are really good and I’ll watch the film again this weekend and I think I’m going to put the CD in film order as much as possible, with whatever’s left over used as bonus tracks. There’s a lot more coming that I’ll have to listen to, but the music is so good it’s total pleasure.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because my savage breast is heaving and needs to be soothed by some beautiful Johnny Mandel music.

Today I’ll decide whether to highlight or not to highlight the Nudie scripts. I’ll also practice the piano and not use my voice too much. And then around seven, our actors will start arriving – we have a grand bunch of folks coming – Matt Ashford, Heather Lee, Alet Taylor, and about ten others. I don’t really have enough chairs, but we’ll make it work. I’m really looking forward to hearing the show in its new version and seeing how all the new stuff plays, and how all the reworked stuff plays and lands.

Tomorrow, I think I still have the day free, and then I’m having dinner with a book dealer friend who’s in town. I’m looking forward to that very much. Friday, we’ll be recording all the vocal tracks for the Nudie demo. Cason will be there, as will Jenna Romano, Alet Taylor, and Lauren Rubin. I’m singing everything else.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the long jog (if possible and weather permitting), I must highlight or not, I must prepare the living room for the reading, we must have the reading, and then I may go out for a bite to eat with our very own Cason and Miss Karen. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I put on some more charming music to sooth the savage breast. My breast is so savage it regularly beats those who come near it about the face and neck.
