June 4, 2009:

MY OWN SWEET TIME

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I have two minutes in which to write the notes if they are to be posted on time. Therefore, I think it’s safe to say they will not be posted on time. Therefore I will take my own sweet time and no one can say boo about it. Did you know, for example, that boo spelled backwards is oob? Just asking. And did you know, for example that if you throw and extra “b” onto boo or oob you get boob? Just asking. You see – I am taking my own sweet time for I have time on my hands and time is on my side. First of all, how can time be on my hands and my side at the same time? Second of all, what in tarnation is time doing on my hands and my side? Just standing there like so much fish? Doing a jig? Eating a churro? Frankly, I wish I had time on my feet or knees, but time is only on my hands and my side because time is funny that way, which is more than you can say for this endless one-joke paragraph.

Rather than continue in that mode, I have started a new paragraph. We have recast the role that needed recasting and got a very good actor to do it, one who actually resembles Alan Abelew, who played the role in the film. So, just when we were breathing easy about that, we got word that one of our excellent female ensemble members is probably going to have to drop out thanks to that bad boy Rob Marshall, who’s in town re-shooting dance numbers from Nine. With all that time and all that many and all those cameras I’d like to know why he couldn’t get it right the first time. Since this gal is one of his favorites, I’m sure she’ll get the gig, which puts us in a bind – but since she’d be leaving us in the lurch, IF it happens, I’ve asked her to simply find a replacement who’s as good as she is. I feel that that’s the least she can do if she’s leaving us with only three days until rehearsal. And then there’s the endless madness of people asking if they can come three hours late one day, or miss this hour or that hour, and I have no time to deal with any of that sort of thing. We have a very short window of time to block (even perfunctorily) a very big show and we can’t keep changing the schedule every time someone wants a few hours off. I have to tell you, in my actor day it would never have occurred to me to be so bold as to commit to something and then ask everyone to make changes for me. But, that was then and now is now. Certainly, I don’t want to do a hastily thrown together reading – that’s not why I’m doing this, so I’m having to be as tough as possible (or Cason is – I only step in when absolutely necessary).

I’ve come up with a new section for the Perversion number, and it’s pretty amusing. The song works okay in the movie, but for the stage the music is very repetitious, and Adam Cates, our choreographer, asked if we could put a dance break in the middle, which I thought was a great way to break it up. Then, on the long jog two days ago, I got the idea of doing a fashion parade, you know the kind, like the Ziegfeld Follies, or the Loveland sequence of Follies, or the Beautiful Girl number from Singin’ In The Rain, where people parade while someone does a four-line verse about their clothing or jewelry or hair or whatever. I thought that could really be amusing to do with perversions and those accoutrements, so I came up with four verses – I sent them to David Wechter and Adam and they both loved the idea, so that’s going into the number.

I had a lovelier than lovely lunch with the lady from MGM, and booked a couple more projects whilst downing copious amounts of orange chicken (extra crispy), and garlic chicken. I now have enough releases to get us through September and maybe even October, and I’ve got other things pending, so I’m actually hoping to be good through the end of the year. It’s so much fun to actually have Kritzerland doing regular CD releases. I know a couple of the titles will please certain hainsies/kimlets. And we continue to proof and fix the new Kritzerland site. Today we’ll be working long and hard and also hard and long on the shopping cart and making sure all that gets put right.

At the end of the very long day, I finally sat on my couch like so much fish and watched a motion picture on Blu-Ray entitled Grease. It’s not my favorite movie or even a film I love, but it’s enjoyable in its own way, and Travolta and Olivia Newton-John are terrific together, and the cast is a lot of fun and, of course, I know many of them, including Mr. Barry Pearl, Miss Annette Cardona (Cha-Cha), and Miss Didi Conn. I also remembered that I knew Miss Stockard Channing briefly when I was doing Forget-Me-Not Lane at the Taper. She was in Two Gentlemen From Verona over at the Ahmanson, and we used to hang with the cast often. At the time, she was dating Conrad Janis and I remember we all went over to the Pacific Dining Car and had steaks between shows one day. I think Larry Kert was with us, too. Ah, memories, like the corners of my mind. Anyway, I watched the whole movie – I do like the choreography, but some of Allan Carr’s “improvements” are not so hot, and the pacing is very weird at times. The Blu-Ray looks pretty excellent most of the time – very colorful and pretty sharp and a big step up from the DVD, which didn’t look that good.

After the movie, I had a big chopped salad (salami, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes with Eyetalian dressing) at Palermo’s. I normally never eat two meals of that size in one day, but I’d done a very brisk long jog and I was hungry, so there you are.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because time is on both my hands and my side and it’s beginning to be irritating.

As mentioned, today I will be working with the designer on the shopping cart aspect of the new Kritzerland site. I suspect there will be lots of back and forth and even some forth and back and that we’ll be talking to paypal a lot. One of my goals is to make the International shipping a lot easier and friendlier than it is on the old site. So, I’m hoping it’s not going to be too difficult. I’m determined that the site go live next week, probably the end of next week. Other than that, it’s just prep work for Nudie, as there are still the little ditties that I have to get to the copyist – all that and all the fixes have to be done by Saturday so I can get them all copied for Monday’s rehearsal.

I’m giving a reminder that this Sunday is our annual Tony Awards Do here at haineshisway.com and you won’t want to miss one single minute of it.

I also have to get the new novel proofed and ready for design with Grant Geissman – it’s my intention to have everything to the publisher by the end of this month and to have books by the end of August. So, that will be consuming me for the next few weeks, on top of all the other things that are consuming me, but never fear, I have time on my hands and time on my side.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the long jog (after my two big meals of yesterday, I’ll do it briskly), I must attend to a shopping cart, I must do errands and whatnot and then I must watch a motion picture on either DVD or Blu-Ray. Today’s topic of discussion: What’s the biggest meal you’ve ever eaten? When was it, what was the occasion, and describe the entire meal from start to finish. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst my very weary bones hit the road to dreamland.
