ONLY FRIDAYS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, is it really Friday already? Wasn’t it just Friday? And yet, here it is, Friday again. These Fridays are piling up like the traffic on the 405. Pretty soon, there won’t be any other days of the week – we’ll have all Fridays. Of course, having all Fridays might not be such a bad thing, since Fridays are the end of the work week. All right, then, enough about Fridays. Yesterday, for example, was Thursday, and what a Thursday it was – busy, busy, busy (that is three busys). I got up very early, prepared all the boxes for the big dealer shipments, and then the Topkapi CDs arrived. I got them all packaged, packaged up the dealer orders, and took everything to the post office. It’s rather daunting doing it all by oneself, but done it is, with all boxes save for five international boxes are now shipped, and the five internationals go out this morning. I then did the long jog, announced the new Kritzerland title (I was originally going to announce it at the same time these here notes went up, but everything was ready and we just did it). Orders started coming in immediately, which is always fun. I then toddled off to have a haircut with Teddy. Teddy was in a very silly mood and we had a blast. He removed quite a bit of gray from my hair and put some blonde in, so I now look younger than springtime, hair-wise, but older than fall every other-wise. The haircut and coloring took over two hours, and then I hurried back to the Valley, picked up one package, and then came home, but only briefly, since I was starving. I printed out about half the orders, then went over to Hugo’s and had some mac and cheese, then came home and printed out the other half of the orders. There was a little brouhaha happening over on the Film Score Monthly discussion board about our new release – as I’d predicted in a thread prior to the announcement, I felt there would be some people who would be less than thrilled that we were doing the CD, as it had been part of a pricey box set. The reaction was mostly wonderful, but there were indeed a few upset people, who felt their investment had been compromised. But, as an inveterate collector, I don’t really agree – the box set is the box set and as such will always retain its value, even if ALL the scores are eventually re-released. I explained that these licenses are only for three years and then all these titles are fair game for everyone. I also explained that because the box set was limited to 1200 copies and those sold out instantly at a very high price of $120 or something like that, that a lot of people who were only interested in one or two out of the twenty scores included were out of luck, as were people who couldn’t afford the high price tag and the people who couldn’t act quickly enough. Obviously, one wouldn’t want to re-release everything in the set, because eighty percent of the titles would barely sell the 1200 let alone another 1000. But I felt The Apartment is such an iconic and popular film, that we’d do fine and so far I have no complaints. I will be doing at least one more score from the set, but more than likely there will be a couple beyond that, and then that will be it.

After that, I sat on my couch like so much fish and watched two more episodes of Lost, both of which I thought were mediocre, with certain things beginning to be a real bore, like characters immediately blaming other characters for something, beating them up, only to find out they were not to blame. This same beat has happened in over a third of the shows and it’s really become predictable and tiresome and I do hope they stop doing it. These were episodes 20 and 21, and the fact that they were nowhere near as good as what preceded them is a little odd, considering the season is almost done – but I’m hoping the last few shows are up to the best. And then it will be on to season two.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because it’s late and I still have the next Kritzerland release to listen to (can you believe it).

Today, I shall ship the five international packages, I shall take a break from the long jog, and I shall finish proofing the book. Later this evening, I may have a meeting with our very own Miss Alet Taylor.

Tomorrow night, I’ll be seeing the new Harry Potter movie at the DGA, and Sunday night I may go see a screening of a 35mm print of Black Narcissus. Otherwise, I’m taking it easy, although I do hope to enter the fixes on the book so we can send it off to the publisher, but that will depend on Mr. Grant Geissman’s schedule.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, ship packages, take a break from the long and short jog, I must finish proofing a book, I must eat something fun, and I may have a late meeting. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player, and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – DVD (Blu-Ray), Lost and Nightmare Castle. CD, the next Kritzerland release (after The Apartment), plus the new CD releases of Star Trek II and Cain’s Hundred (a TV show scored by Jerry Goldsmith). Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I ponder a world with only Fridays.
