THE LOVELIER THAN LOVELY DAY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I had a lovelier than lovely day yesterday, mostly thank to the quickest sellout of any title Kritzerland has done. Even though it was announced at midnight, most people didn’t see it until early morning, whatever time zone they were in. By nine-fifteen we were done. I was expecting a one-day sellout, but nothing this quick. The fact is, my dealers ordered really heavy on this title, and I didn’t have many to sell on the Kritzerland site – in fact, on our site, it did pretty normal business. And money-wise, I won’t really see the dough from this for probably eight weeks, but it will really help, because doing the releases as quickly as we’ve been doing them, the bills really pile up, one after another. But what a turnaround this label has done in the last ten months, and a completely unexpected turnaround doing titles I could never have imagined last year at this time. And we’ve got more great stuff coming in the next six months, so stay tuned. So, that was a great way to start off the morning, and then I did a two-mile jog, after which I had to hurry to record the demo tracks. We convened at eleven in Encino and it took until about two-thirty, a little longer than I’d have thought, but it all came out fine. I did a little arrangement work on a couple of the tunes, just little things to make them feel more show-like. Then I had a wonderful lunch at Islands, where I ate my beloved Big Wave burger with bacon and cheese, plus Islands’ yummilicious fries. There weren’t that many in the basket with the burger, but, of course, they’re “endless” fries, so they did bring more and more we ate – way too many, in fact, but boy were they good and just what the doctor ordered. The doctor is always ordering exactly what I order – no imagination at all. I then went to the mail place and picked up two packages, one of them from the wonderful Lanny Meyers, who’s been doing a little personal jazz project that we may end up releasing if I think we can sell it. I then came home, answered lots o’ e-mails, had a couple of telephonic calls, and then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Then I watched an episode of Mad Men, which I found completely irritating – really bad writing in a couple of scenes and really repellent behavior by one of the leading characters, who then at least paid for his repellent behavior. I continue to be very impressed by Elizabeth Moss as Peggy, and I was VERY impressed to find out that the weight gain was completely artificial, with prosthetics and fat suits – fooled me, and incredible work by the make-up and wardrobe departments.

I then took a drive to Reseda and delivered a big box o’ CDs to a dealer. Then I came home and watched another episode of Mad Men, this one a little better, and now I have two left. Is season two out on Blu-Ray?

I then listened to the new re-recording of Ernest Gold’s Exodus – I’ve wanted the complete score for close to fifty years, and it’s great to finally have it. One wishes it were conducted with a little more passion and with tempos that weren’t quite so lethargic, but that’s nitpicking, and I’ve been having a grand time listening.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button because I have a touch of a headache, which is probably because I need a touch of sleep.

Today will be a light day. I do have to do the long jog, I have to pick up some tapes, I have to do some errands and whatnot, but I can do all of it at my leisure, which will be nice. The evening is mine all mine.

Tomorrow, we’ll be putting the vocals on the tracks we did yesterday. I think it will be a longer day – probably won’t finish until four or five. Not sure what’s happening in the evening yet, but hope to be at least eating something amusing.

Saturday is, of course, my book signing, and I really hope to see some of you West Coast hainsies/kimlets in attendance – we will have cake, I’ll read a little, and it will be ever so much fun. So, come and say hey.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the long jog, pick up tapes, do errands and whatnot, and eat something amusing. Today’s topic of discussion: What is your favorite movie poster art? And your favorite theater poster art? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I say thanks to all who made Taras Bulba the quickest sellout in Kritzerland history.
