OUT OF TOUCH

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, there are times when I feel so isolated from the world in which I live. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, there are times when I, BK, feel so isolated from the world in which I live, at least for certain parts of the entertainment world. I attended a partay thrown by the LA Festival of New Musicals. It was very nice to be invited and it was held in the very pretty home of Eric Vetro, vocal coach to the stars. I didn’t really know all that many people – actually, I may have known more but I sort of found a seat and sat and never moved. I did see my old pal Amanda McBroom – hadn’t seen her in quite some time and I really like her a lot. It was also nice to see her occasional writing partner, Michelle Brourman. I chatted with lyricist David Zippel, saw several pianists I’ve worked with, including Brad Ellis, Michael Orland, and Gerald Sternbach. There was food aplenty (I did not partake), and they had entertainment scheduled. And that is where I instantly felt completely isolated from that part of the entertainment world. The first singer was Kristen Bell – her I worked with when she was a teen – she sang two David Zippel songs. But then there were a succession of singers singing songs by writers that everyone seemed aware of – I had no clew. They listed like ten hits of writer Diane Warren – hadn’t heard of one of them. They had performers from current TV shows – didn’t know who any of them were, nor had I heard of their shows. I just sat there like so much fish. The lovely Kim Huber was there as was the lovely David Burnham – both have done the Gardenia show, but after an hour of entertainment I had to leave for dinner. I was told later that the show went on for another hour and a half. That’s too long by an hour and a half. Give people a solid hour of greatness and they will be grateful and happy for the brevity. I don’t care who’s performing – two and a half hours in someone’s yard is too much. And, as always, I feel there has to be a point. It’s always amazing to me when there is no point, and I suppose most don’t care about it, but I cannot invest or enjoy without a point. And a point is easy. But it was a swell partay and I was happy to be there.

After the partay, I joined Melody and her family for dinner at nearby Mo’s. I ate like a pig, but I felt I deserved a splurge meal – I had a bacon cheeseburger (with a lot of thousand island slathered on it), a tiny bit of pasta salad, potato salad, and cole slaw, plus a really small Caesar salad. Had I stopped there I would have been fine and I’m sure I’m fine anyway, but I also had a piece of chocolate chip cake – I didn’t finish it, though, so there’s that. We all had a really good time. I then came home and finished liner notes and listened to the second version of a new master.

Prior to all that, I’d gotten up early, done the four-mile jog early (it was very overcast yesterday morning). Then I did some errands and whatnot – and we had very odd weather – thunder, and then about two minutes of light rain in completely sunny skies. Elsewhere, in the northwest Valley they had hail. I never got to the mail place today, so have no idea if the important envelope came or not. I’ll check today.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below and maybe when I arise from my beauty sleep I won’t feel so out of touch with the world in which I live.

Today, I shall hopefully arise after a long and good night’s sleep. Then I have some writing to do, I’ll see if the important envelope has arrived, I’ll eat something light but amusing, and maybe, just maybe, I’ll actually get some relaxing in.

Tomorrow, I’ll be up at six in the morning to announce our new title, then I’ll hopefully be printing out a LOT of orders. I think I have a meeting at some point, and I know I have a conference call in the late afternoon. Tuesday I think we may be doing the Melody fixes for her CD and I’ll be recording a little dialogue for our web series. I’ll be seeing the second cut of the first episodes, and then later in the week the editor and I will sit and fine cut them, add the front and end titles and those will be done except for adding the title music, which is being written by Grant Geisssman. So, a busy week, but hopefully a fun one.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the four-mile jog, hopefully pick up an important envelope, write, eat, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland and try not to be out of touch.
