THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, did you know, for example, that the pen is mightier than the sword. I found that out because I had a pen and I had a sword and I’ll be hornswoggled if the pen wasn’t mightier than the sword. The sword was a big ol’ wussburger, if you must know. The sword just sat there like so much fish, while the mighty pen wrote words, words, and more words. Of course, that’s not entirely true because I don’t write with a pen, but today’s pen is the computer keyboard, and in my world that’s a mighty pen, baby. What the HELL am I talking about? I am almost into the year 1998 and that’s a good thing. That was a rather big year for our recordings and the last year that would be big – a mere year later the Spotlight Series would end with about as small a whimper as it could. I had an enjoyable day on memory lane, remembering Jane Krakowski and our meeting, Christiane Noll and our meeting, Ira Levin and our meeting and all sorts of other fun stuff. I was pretty blessed to be able to do all those albums and work with all those people and if this book does nothing else but offer call outs to those incredible folks then it will have been worth writing. Certainly, like the first book, it’s a love letter to a time that can never be again.

I was up early, finessed, then meant to print out to page 310 put inadvertently only printed out to page 300, which means muse Margaret will be left mid-sentence. I finessed yesterday’s almost twenty-five pages, then Xeroxed the 140 that I was bringing to muse Margaret, then brought them to her. She was going to try and read them during the day, but I think her eyes get tired so maybe she didn’t finish them and maybe that’s why she didn’t call – at least I hope so. I always worry until I hear from her. I then ate some lunch, then came home and did about twelve pages. I’m hoping that by page four hundred of the manuscript that I’ll be through with the Varese days. And then, we’ll see how many pages I’ll have to devote to the rise and fall of the record label and those subsequent years to 2005. My goal will be to tell that entire story in 175 pages. I’m hoping that I can and that would be just the right length for the book – between 410 and 450 pages. But if it goes longer or feels to long at that length, I’ll just go into the middle of the book and make some cuts. Hopefully I won’t have to, though. After that, I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched another Maigret movie. I’m finding that the ones made between 1993 and 1995 are my least favorites. Some of the directors aren’t as good as the later directors, and the scripts aren’t as strong. And this movie was the second one out of the thirty I’ve seen that didn’t have a score by Laurent Petitgirard and I can only say that I missed his music and that the music in this film was not good. So, on to the next.

I then wrote another five or six pages, then got all the 1998 CDs organized. My friend Nick Redman suggested I do a discography at the end of the book, and I’m thinking that’s probably a really good idea, especially if I go back and make any edits to the middle of the book.

I’m back – I had to take a notes detour, because I wanted to finish something in the book and end the chapter. I was feeling it and I have to admit I got very weepy. But, that’s done now, and I think where I put it, even though it’s out of chronology and done as one of my “postscripts,” felt good to me. I’ll see how I feel in the morning but I’m glad I got that bit out of the way – even if I move it, it’s written.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I am now completely exhausted and must get my beauty sleep.

Today, I shall finesse, write new pages, eat, hopefully pick up some damn packages, write, write, and write.

Tomorrow will be more of the same, and I have a lunch to do, and in the evening I’m going to see a screening of The Artist, which I’m very much looking forward to. Friday will be writing and I think there’s something else going on, too.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora or the Hula, because today is the birthday of sporadic dear reader and new daddy, Noel. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to sporadic dear reader and new daddy, Noel. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO SPORADIC DEAR READER AND NEW DADDY, NOEL!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, finesse, write, eat, hopefully pick up some damn packages, write, write, and write. Today’s topic of discussion: If you had to choose five BK produced CDs to take to a dessert island, what would they be and why those five? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I shall undoubtedly dream of a mighty pen.
