PARCHEESI

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this week is flying by, like a gazelle playing Parcheesi. Does anyone still play Parcheesi? Frankly, I never played Parcheesi and I don’t even have a clew what the game is about. Parcheesi always sounded like some kind of pizza to me. Has Parcheesi gone the way of the dodo bird? Certainly the dodo bird has gone the way of the dodo bird. These here notes seem to be going the way of the dodo bird, so perhaps if I actually write some notes we’ll save ourselves from extinction.

Yesterday was kind of a day. It’s a little hazy for reasons I don’t really know. I do know I got up around nine, and I do know I answered some e-mails and printed out some orders. I do know the helper came by. I do know that then I went to the editing room, where we watched the cut. I’d asked for one shot to be put in, a little explanatory shot and we’d recorded a line to be put over it, but when I saw it I knew immediately it was completely unnecessary and, in fact, interrupted the flow. And one can never interrupt the flow. So out the shot and the line went and we locked the cut. Then our assistant editor made two Quick Time files – one compressed for You Tube, and one uncompressed for use in hi-def situations. Then he burned the hi-def version onto a DVD for us to use at next Sunday’s Kritzerland show. All that took about two hours, and then we all moseyed on over to the Coral CafĂ©, where I had their big boy breakfast – three eggs, toast, two pancakes, two sausage links, two pieces of bacon, and one piece of ham. The boys each had a bite of the pancakes (two) and I only ate one and a half of them, and only one piece of toast. We all had a very good time.

Then I picked up no packages, did some errands and whatnot, then came home and listened to about half of an upcoming master – the other half will show up soon, I’m sure. Then I caught up on all our posts here at haineshisway.com and many thanks to our East Coast dear readers for the levelheaded non-hyperbolic posts. Then I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Suddenly, starring Frank Sinatra. At least I thought I was watching a Blu and Ray – I really couldn’t believe it because it looked more like a DVD. And then I realized it WAS a DVD because once again the idiots who do the Blu-ray DVD combo packs put the DVD on the right so that it’s the ONLY disc you see when you open the case. The Blu-ray disc is on the LEFT under a piece of paper. How stupid are these people. Well, the fact that the Blu-ray wasn’t all that much better may just tell you how stupid this public domain company is. It’s a better copy than most PD copies floating around, I suppose. The movie is a very short taut little thriller about a presidential assassination attempt, with Sinatra as a cold-blooded killer. He’s quite good, as are the other actors, but Lewis Allen’s direction never really rises above ordinary. Still, it’s seventy-six minutes long and never overstays its welcome.

After that, Juliana Hansen came over and we went to my engineer’s house and fixed the one lyric she flubbed in her show – it took all of two minutes. Then she went on her merry way (she’s off to Japan for three months) and I did a two-mile jog. Then I just relaxed and played on the computer. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get as much beauty sleep as possible.

Today, I shall be up by eight, to the DMV by ten, and hopefully that won’t take too long. I can’t really remember how specific appointments work, but hopefully I won’t be there for more than a half-hour. Then I have to do some errands and whatnot, hopefully pick up some packages (although they’re all coming via Ontrac so that means late in the day, which is a real problem, as always), do a jog (time permitting) and then we have our first Kritzerland rehearsal, which I’m looking forward to very much. After that, young Jenna Rosen and family are coming by and we’ll work on a song she’s doing at a big singing contest and then she’s interviewing me for a class project. After that, we’ll be going out to a birthday dinner for Jenna, who just turned fourteen.

Tomorrow, lots o’ stuff to do, including the Halloween show for the retirement home where Jason Graae’s mommy lives. Jason and I are doing I Remember It Well. Then, of course, I’ll come right home to hand out a LOT of Halloween candies to the Halloween kiddies. That usually takes three solid hours, so probably no movie watching will happen. Thursday is our second Kritzerland rehearsal, Friday is busy, then we have our stumble-through on Saturday and our sound check and show on Sunday.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, go to the DMV to renew my license, do errands and whatnot, jog, hopefully pick up some packages, have a rehearsal, work on a song, be interviewed and then have a birthday dinner. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your all-time favorite Sinatra recordings, and what are your all-time favorite Sinatra film performances? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, wondering if I shall ever know what the HELL Parcheesi is all about.
