WORKING

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the holiday weekend is over and if it’s Tuesday it must be Tuesday and time to buckle down, Winsocki and get back to work. Of course, yesterday I worked plenty so at some point this week I’m going to need a little ME time. Yesterday certain didn’t seem like a holiday to me, that much I can tell you and therefore I told you that much. I mean, aren’t you supposed to be able to sleep in on a holiday? Not me. I was up at six in the morning to announce our new Kritzerland title and then the workers arrived at eight. They measured and looked and walked and did but mostly they prepared the living room for the work to be done. But the fact is, other than that prepping, no work was actually done yesterday, save for buying supplies and such for the work ahead.

I wanted to scan some photos into the computer, but the scan thing has been giving me error messages so I made the humungous error of calling Hewlett-Packard. Instead of having me go directly to system preferences and try scanning from “print and scan” there, he took me through every machination in the book only to have me go to “print and scan” where everything worked fine. That was literally three hours after I called. It was unbelievable. He had me uninstall everything, then methodically go through ever application and utility folder to nuke any reference to any HP product. Once that was done, he tried to do a firmware update. It failed trying to do it from the machine itself, so we went to the HP site and downloaded from there – it should have taken no more than two minutes, but forty minutes later it still hadn’t completed the download. He kept blaming my Internet connection and I kept telling him, no, every website I went to loaded quick as can be. But he kept blaming my Internet connection. We’d already restarted the computer about twelve times and he wanted me to do that again, and unplug the modem and the Time Machine and then re-plug. I flat-out refused. He then checked the HP site itself and guess what – it was THEIR site that was the problem. He apologized. But because we couldn’t do that, he then had to take me to the Apple site where I had to download all the printer drivers again because he’d nuked all of that. That took an hour. I was so annoyed by that point that I told him to call me back in one hour. I then went and did a three-mile jog.

When I returned the download was just completing. Without him, I installed the drivers, then printed and everything print-wise was fine. So, in essence I was back where I began before I called him. He then asked me to go to “print and scan” and from there I could indeed scan. So, I could have done that had that been the first thing he’d asked me to do. They still want to do the firmware thing and if we configure the machine at that point it will put a scan icon in my dock, which I’d like. So, they’ll be calling me at nine this morning.

I was starving by then so I had a turkey sandwich and no fries or onion rings, then came back home. The workers left around three-thirty and I printed out orders and scanned photographs, made a Kritzerland at Sterling’s Upstairs at The Federal page on Facebook (don’t know why I hadn’t done it before – so, go “like” it already), and then it was time for rehearsal. We didn’t have our full cast – two people are coming today at some point. But we began with young Sami Staitman, who ran through her song, Any Little Fish. She’s adorable and it will be great. Then we had Susan Watson, who ran through her one song, If Love Were All, which she does beautifully. After her it was Eileen Barnett. She ran her two solos, a put-together of Where Shall I Find Him? (from Sail Away) and A Room With a View, the ballad Something Very Strange (Sail Away), and the very young Oliviana Marie came and joined Eileen in The Young Persons’ ABC, also from Sail Away. That’s going to be very amusing.

After that it was John Sloman, who ran his three numbers, Don’t Put Your Daughter on the Stage, Mrs. Worthington, How Do You Do, Middle Age (from The Girl Who Came to Supper), and a put-together of I’ll Remember Her (from Supper) and I’ll See You Again. Finally, we had Robert Yacko, who ran Mad Dogs and Englishmen, Sail Away, and When You Want Me (from Sail Away). For a first rehearsal it was surprisingly smooth sailing. After that, I was ready to faint from hunger so I went to Subway and got a foot-long Subway Club – more food than I’ve been eating in a day, but it’s not horrendous, calorie-wise, and my lunch sandwich was not so big and I jogged so I’m sure I netted out at about 1300 or 1400 calories tops.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get as much beauty sleep as possible.

Today, I shall be up at eight to greet the workers, I shall talk to Hewlett-Packard at nine and they will have exactly fifteen minutes of my time. After that, it’s a full day of website stuff – going over everything that needs doing – I was very patient last week but days went by without any of the fixes I’ve been asking for being done (one wonders what they would have done if I hadn’t actually figured out most of the fixes for the discussion board) – I want action now and I want to be completely finished by Friday at the absolute latest. We have our two other female cast members coming to rehearse somewhere around noon, I’ll do a jog, hopefully I’ll pick up some packages, I’ll eat, and then at some point the day will be done and perhaps I’ll actually get to watch a motion picture.

The rest of the week is the same – meetings, meals, keeping my eye on the workers, rehearsals, stumble-through, sound check and show.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora or the mambo because today is the birthday of our very own dear reader Arnold M. Brockman. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to our very own dear reader Arnold M. Brockman. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO OUR VERY OWN DEAR READER ARNOLD M. BROCKMAN!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, get up early, do a jog, have a rehearsal, eat, hopefully pick up some packages and keep my eye on the workers. Today’s topic of discussion: Who are your favorite twentieth century artists and which of their paintings are your favorites? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which I shall be back to working and a lot of it.
