FAREWELL 2022, WELCOME 2023!

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I have breaking bombshell news for you – it is the final day of 2022 and the final day of December and the day of our Annual New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Bash right here at haineshisway.com. And tomorrow brings us a brand New Year called 2023 and a brand new month called January, and it is my fervent hope and prayer that 2023 and January will be a year and month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful. As for now, it is still 2022 as I write these here notes, and I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to Miles Davis + 19. That is because I just finished watching a two-hour PBS American Masters documentary about Miles Davis. It was very well done, no shots of leaves or bushes or trees or streets or cars going nowhere, no reenactments, no stretching it out to six hours. Just great music, great clips, and interesting interviews, all done with simplicity so that you never have a “director” who’s basically saying LOOK AT ME! It’s not about you, bucko. Prior to that, I watched another PBS two-part documentary, a Queer history of Los Angeles. Again, very well done and very interesting, with amazing clips. A lot of what this documentary covers was covered in the long monologue Doug Haverty wrote for L.A. Now and Then. The interviews are wonderful and I really enjoyed it. And last night, after posting the notes, I watched a PBS American Masters program about the friendship between Groucho Marx and Dick Cavett – very sweet, very funny, and very touching. I had to get the PBS app on the Firestick, but it was easy and now I can watch all the PBS I want. All three of these documentaries come highly recommended by the likes of me.

Yesterday was almost a quiet day until an annoying text woke me up from a short nap. I ignored it. I got about seven hours of sleep, got up, answered e-mails, had telephonic conversations, continued making research lists, found out that the January Kritzerland show is sold out, so we’ll most likely add a Saturday night performance. The cast is all here anyway for the stumble-through, so we’ll go directly from there to the club. If reservations are too light, we can always cancel the show. But nice to know we’re sold out.

I had an Eyetalian sandwich from Fat Sal’s and it was okay. I got fries with it, but they arrived ice cold – I heated ‘em up in the microwave and ate about half, but they weren’t very good, I’m afraid. I dozed off for about forty minutes after eating.

Then I went to Gelson’s and got everything for the handful of folks who’ll come by on New Year’s Day – I know I’ll be making Wacky Noodles with chicken, but I may also whip up one batch of tuna pasta salad, too, just because. I came home and put everything away, the began my viewing. And now, Miles is still playing with the 19.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll mosey on over to the mail place and hopefully pick up some packages and, more importantly, two important envelopes, one of which arrived yesterday, but that one wasn’t THE important envelope. Then I’ll either stop and get something to take home and eat or I’ll have something delivered, perhaps from Stanley’s. Then I’ll hang out until our Annual New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Bash begins, and I’m hoping at least some of you dear readers will come and be festive and partake in the merriment and mirth and laughter and legs. At nine, we on the Coast of West will watch you Easterners’ balls drop, and then at midnight us Westerners will watch our own balls drop and shout Happy New Year and I will take my one sip of champagne that I do every year. Prior to midnight, I will, of course, do my yearly contemplation thing.

Tomorrow, I’ll be up by ten and as soon as I’m coherent I will begin writing a new book. I’ve already written, in very loose form that needs organizing, about eighteen pages – I think that’s the most I’ve ever written in advance, but I needed to, to get the style and rhythm and lead character voice to my liking. I’ll write on and off until three, then I’ll get ready for the handful of folks who’ll be here at four. After they’re gone, I’ll perhaps write a bit more, and then I can watch, listen, and relax. Then next week is all writing, doing the Kritzerland show schedule, having a work session with our musical director, and praying for a 2023 major miracle right away.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, I’ll hopefully pick up packages and two important envelopes, I’ll eat something fun, I’ll attend our Annual New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Bash and ring in the New Year with our Easterners and then with us on the West Coast. Today’s topic of discussion: No discussion – instead, let’s all send out the most positive light we can muster for a wonderful 2023. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as we say a fond Farewell 2022 and a welcoming Hello 2023!
