February 20, 2006:

IN A STATE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am trying to work myself into a state. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I am trying to work myself into a state. You see, I’m feeling lethargic, and lethargy is not conducive to writing these here notes. So, I am trying to work myself into a state. First I tried working myself into Iowa. But, you know, there’s nothin’ halfway about the Iowa way they treat you when they treat you which they may not do at all. Then I tried working myself into Mississippi, but frankly there were two many S’s and P’s and I left immediately. So, I’m still trying to work myself into a state. By the way (BTW, in Internet lingo), if anyone has a clew as to what the HELL I’m going on about, please do let us all know, as we’re all agog, oh, yes, we are simply agog. Speaking of agog, I had a fine day yesterday. I woke up a bit earlier than I cared to, but I just relaxed and puttered around the home environment. I had a few telephonic conversations, then I showered and toddled off to the theater. We had a decent-sized crowd and they were a quiet but attentive audience, and the performance was fine. Our very own Pogue was in attendance, and after the show he and pal Larry Drake and I went to Marie Callendar’s and stuffed huge amounts of food down our gaping maws. As always, my salad with Ranch dressing was excellent, but the always-reliable bacon cheeseburger wasn’t up to par and, in fact, was quite ordinary, which I found upsetting. I ate most of it, but not until I pulled off all the undercooked bacon. However, we ordered their new macaroni and cheese dish for the three of us to share as an appetizer, and that was absolutely superb and I’ll be having that as my new regular dish there. Of course, we all had to have pie for dessert – they both had the coconut cream pie with whipped cream, while I had the cherry pie ala mode, which I only ate three-fourths of. Then I came home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I finally managed to watch a motion picture on DVD entitled Island in the Sun, starring Mr. James Mason, Miss Joan Fontaine, Mr. Harry Belafonte, Miss Dorothy Dandridge and lots of other folks. While it was a fairly daring picture for its day, it’s quite a turgid little melodrama, with too many subplots for its own good. You just jump from subplot to subplot and after a time it just becomes irritating. The actors are all good, it’s beautifully shot by Freddie Young, but, at 119 minutes, it’s really slow going. The transfer is quite luscious. I also watched the Biography on Dorothy Dandridge, which is included as an extra. It’s one of those facile quickies about a really interesting person. The prize for the most irritating person interviewed goes to Miss Halle Berry, who really is one of the most obnoxious people I’ve ever seen. I also watched three more Superman episodes, all of which were lots of fun. Before going on to discs three and four of season two, I’m going to backtrack to season one now.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because frankly I’ve worked myself into a state (California) and I must now strive to complete these here notes in fine fashion (toreador pants, stiletto heels, and a red blouse with fringe).

I had no plans whatsoever for today, but that has suddenly changed and I must go over the hill to listen to some tapes for a potential Kritzerland release. If I like what I hear, it’s going on the fast track for a late March release, along with Mr. Kevin Spirtas’ album. And if we go ahead with it, there will be three or four other albums in the series that will follow throughout the year. Stay tuned. After that, I shall come back home and do plenty o’ nuthin’. After I do plenty o’ nuthin’, I shall then sup with our very own Miss Tammy Minoff. We’ll be going to Genghis Cohen, our favorite Chinese restaurant.

Today is, of course, a holiday. So, I hope all of our hainsies/kimlets have an excellent holiday day, and that everyone here partakes of some delicious foodstuff or other.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, listen to some tapes, I must write, I must polish patter, I must get some exercise (something I haven’t done in about eight months), I must work myself into a state, and then I must sup. Today’s topic of discussion: What is the first “R” rated movie you remember seeing? What, if any, was the first “X” rated movie you remember seeing (and remember, Midnight Cowboy was “X” rated). And did you feel the “R” and “X” movies you saw deserved their ratings? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst we all work ourselves into various and sundried states.
