THE LATE SHOW

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry for it is the midnight hour and as everyone on the planet Earth knows, these here notes should be posted at midnight, and yet they are not because I have been sitting here like so much fish, watching some videos to do with unused Bernard Herrmann cues, which I found fascinating.  Therefore, I lost track of time and time lost track of me, not necessarily in that order. I also had to give my final little nitpicky note on one mix – we fixed that, and now it’s all gone to the mastering guy who will hopefully master it quickly.  So, these here notes will be like The Late Show, that wonderful late-night movie thing they had when I was but a wee bairn.

Yesterday was another day.  I was up at ten after seven hours of sleep, answered e-mails, and then got ready for the noon o’clock rehearsal.  I arrived, we got everything set up, and then I began with a solo, got that set, and then we tackled a huge and long medley.  I set that – took about an hour.  Then I placed all the other solos and did the remaining three group numbers.  And then we ran all the numbers from the day before. We’d been missing one cast member on Monday, but she’d watched the video we’d shot, so she knew most of the stuff, and then I just cleaned a few things and rehearsal was done.  The material really is very funny.  It feels a little long to me, at this point, and the writer already agreed to one song in the long medley going away in total, and two others will get cut down and that will really help.  There’s one other number I don’t think really works – the set-up is long because no one remembers the person being parodied and even if they do, we have a similar number right before it.  We’ll see how it plays tomorrow, but I suspect we’ll talk about letting it go.

After that, I ascertained that there was nothing to pick up at the mail place and instead went directly to the Taco Bell near me, where I got my usual things.  I came home and ate them all up and it was a good batch o’ food.  Then I did a bunch o’ stuff on the computer, had telephonic calls, and somehow the evening just zoomed by like a gazelle eating franks and beans.  I’d meant to finish the new Blu and Ray of 2001 and didn’t. I’d meant to maybe watch The Old Man and the Gun, which I can watch on my computer, but I didn’t.  Nor did I eat any franks and beans, for that or any other matter.

Today, I’ll be up by ten again, then we have a three-hour rehearsal.  I’ll spend the first hour assembling the show, just going from thing to thing, and then we’ll do a rough run of everything and I’ll start to give performance notes.  Then we don’t meet again until our Monday run-through.  After, I’m seriously thinking of going to Dino’s Pizza, my favorite pizza in all of the Valley – it’s only three blocks from our rehearsal place. Then I’ll come home and begin the nice Thanksgiving holidays.

Tomorrow I’m not sure what will be.  The possibilities are staying home and relaxing and eating something here, which I’d have to buy tonight, I suppose.  Or, if we’re feeling up to it, dear reader Jeanne and I might meet for an early meal.  We shall see. Friday is mine all mine and that’s all there is to it.  Saturday we’re back and we’re all hoping the cast has gone over stuff during the five days they’ll have been away.  We play a matinee and then an evening show.  Sunday we have a matinee – Richard and Elizabeth Sherman will be attending along with Disney friend Howard Green, so that should be fun and maybe we’ll go sup after, which would also be fun, especially as we have a favorite Eyetalian jernt nearby.  Monday we do a run-through of the revue, and then we have our first Kritzerland rehearsal. Tuesday is show time for the revue, so most of my day will be consumed with that.  We then have our second Kritzerland rehearsal, then it’s on to the stumble-through, sound check, and show.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora or the Barbra Streisand Twist, for today is the birthday of dear reader KevinH.  So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to dear readers KevinH.  On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO DEAR READER KEVINH!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have a rehearsal, perhaps have some Dino’s Pizza, hopefully pick up packages, and then I’ll relax, listen to music, and perhaps watch something. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like.  So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to finally present these here notes on The Late Show.
