CATCHING THE WORM

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am writing these here notes very early and I am going to post them very early so that I can go to bed very early and hopefully get a really good and long sleep. My goodness, that was quite an informative opening sentence, wasn’t it? There is no mistaking what I’m doing from reading that sentence. For example, from reading that sentence you could not possibly think I was changing a tire. You could not possibly think I was wondering why they have to call oatmeal stone cut oatmeal these days. You could not possibly think I was doing the Lamabda (The Forbidden Dance). No, the only thing you can possibly come away with is that I’m writing these here notes very early and I am going to post them very early so that I can go to bed very early and hopefully get a really good and really long sleep. I feel that today’s notes should be very informative with no humor whatsoever. Certainly we’ve achieved that goal so far. Speaking of so far, yesterday was just a day like any other. I managed to sleep until nine-thirty. I then decided not to do the long jog, the first jog I have missed in over four months. And I must say, silly as it may seem, I felt very guilty about it and twice during the day I thought about doing it – but my saner head prevailed. About ten-thirty I got back in bed and stayed there until just before noon. Around noon, I went to Jerry’s Deli and got a bowl of chicken soup and two pieces of rye bread to go. I brought them back to the home environment and ate the soup and the rye bread all up, after which I had the last two little eighty-calorie macaroons. Picking up the soup was the only time I went outside. Otherwise, I did some organizational work so I can begin writing the notes for the upcoming Kritzerland CD booklet, but mostly I sat on my couch like so much fish and rested.

Yesterday, I watched old TV shows all the livelong day and into the evening. I watched Richard Diamond, Private Detective (does not hold up at all), a weird show called Miami Undercover from the late 1950s – it was notable only for the appearance of a very young Larry King playing a disc jockey. I watched Racket Squad, which was enjoyable. But mostly I watched many episodes of Dragnet, a couple of which were surprisingly bold for their day and a couple of which were surprisingly touching, not something I ever associated with Dragnet. After Barney Phillips left the show as Jack Webb’s partner, they had someone named Herb Ellis playing Frank Smith, his new partner. I don’t know how many episodes he did, but Ben Alexander took over the role and Jack Webb finally found an actor who was just perfect – the other two fellows who played his partner were fine actors, but very serious, and there was no contrast with Mr. Webb. Mr. Alexander is likable and funny, something that would continue with Harry Morgan when the series was revived in the late 1960s. One sees many of the same faces coming back over and over and over again, always playing different roles. Ralph Moody and Virginia Christine and a few others are the most recognizable. And in the last episode I watched I couldn’t believe that a teenage Leonard Nimoy was in the cast. Dragnet was unique – others tried to copy it, but no one came close to doing it as well.

At some point, I made two eggs and an English Muffin for my evening meal, and I had a couple of pieces of chocolate licorice. I could not have taken it more easy, and yet I was still suffering from the same damn symptoms – which come and go, randomly. One minute you have the chills, the next minute you don’t.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below so I can post these very early notes and get to bed very early, because, as we all know, the early bird catches the worm. I wonder if the late bird ever caught the worm?

Today – well, today I will jog, that’s all there is to it. I will not push myself too much, and I may choose to not do the four miles, but I shall do some sort of jog. I’m in that mode, because I did my weekly weigh yesterday and I was more than thrilled to have lost three-and-a-half pounds this past week. I am now in my 160s and have lost a total of 31 ½ pounds. Hoo and ray.

Other than the jog, however, I only have one short errand to do, and other than that I will take it easy and rest – I canceled the rehearsal that was supposed to take place today. I’ll probably rest tomorrow, as well, but then Wednesday the Kevin and Sean rehearsals start and then it’s working every day.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, sleep as late as possible, do some sort of jog, rest, do one short errand, and eat some fun food. I have grown very fond of doing the haineshisway.com discussion board suggested snack of tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onion in vinegar. No calories and very tasty indeed. Today’s topic of discussion: I think we’ll do our favorite song lyric quotes – from any kind of song – show, pop, whatever. Give us your favorite lines, the ones you find clever, amazingly clever, brilliantly rhymed, touching, funny – all of it. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I get my beauty sleep and perhaps catch a worm in the bargain.
