WRITING UP A STORM

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is late and I must write these here notes in a hurry because I must get a good night’s beauty sleep.  And besides, I’ve been writing up a storm for most of the day and evening and I just want to stop typing for the next eight hours or so, so that my brain and fingers are rested for a new day and evening of writing and typing and also typing and writing.

I woke up around ten-thirty after about eight hours of sleep.  I futzed and finessed for a little over an hour, then struggled to get even three paragraphs written.  The reason was simple – I wasn’t writing it the right way.  If I’m on that path it’s like I choke on every word and nothing flows.  I get frustrated until I realize I’m just not doing it correctly.  Once I realize that, I just nuke it and figure it out, which I did.  Once I’d done that, I wrote three pages very quickly because they were right.

Then I went to Jerry’s Deli to get a meal.  Saturdays are never a problem at Jerry’s but for whatever stupid reason, yesterday there were twenty people waiting for tables when I arrived.  Disgusted, I turned right around and went to Du-Par’s.  In hindsight, I should just gone to Subway or Gelson’s, but I am always hoping that Du-Par’s will get their damn act together and go back to the way it was.  I ordered eggs benedict and a short stack.  They both arrived at the same time.  I had a bunch of bites of the short stack – it was okay but nowhere near the glory days when Du-Par’s was the only place for pancakes.  Then I cut into the eggs benedict, which were cooked way too “easy” for me, practically raw.  I sent them back.  When they came back it was better but their hollandaise isn’t very good.  This exact same meal at House of Pies would have been amazing.  But good did come out of it because I’ve made up my mind to never return.

Once I was done, I came right home and resumed writing.  I wrote about six pages and then took a break.  I watched episode two of season two’s The Fall, which I enjoyed very much.  Then it was back to writing and I wrote another five pages, for a total of fourteen.  I was especially happy with the way one of the chapters ended.  I wasn’t quite sure how to do it, and then it just came out and was just right.

Then I took another break and watched two more episodes of The Fall.  By episode four what usually happens when a story is spread too thin happened and things became a bit predictable and even a bit irritating.  This story line is a continuation of the first six episodes and trying to stretch the story to twelve is daunting and very few get it right.  This one’s better than most and I am enjoying it, but at this point you just want them to get on with it.

Then I ended up writing one more page.  I took a shower and then just relaxed for a bit, then got adventurous and wrote the liner notes for our next release, so it was great to get those out of the way.

Today, I’ll be up by ten, I’ll futz and finesse, the helper will come by to organize CDs in the garage while I write.  I’ll probably write until about two-thirty and get as much done as I can.  I would love to get at least halfway through this chapter by the time I have to leave.  Then I’ll go to our fund raising event – that will last two hours, then I’ll leave, get something to eat, then come back home and write throughout the evening.  If I can do twelve pages that will be great, but if I’m feeling the old oats, I may try to do fourteen or fifteen.

Tomorrow, we have our first Inside Out rehearsal.  It will last four hours.  I’ll try to write before going, and I’ll come right home and write the rest of the day and all evening.  There’s a slim chance, if I’m really in the throes of it that I could finish.  If not, I’ll finish on Tuesday at some point, I’m sure.  The rest of the week is all Inside Out rehearsals, as well as getting Muse Margaret the final batch of pages, and having some meetings and meals.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the ham chunks and the cheese slices, let’s all dance the Hora or the Hokey-Pokey, because today is the birthday of only occasional dear reader Charles Pogue.  So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to only occasional dear reader Charles Pogue.  On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO ONLY OCCASIONAL DEAR READER CHARLES POGUE!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, futz and finesse, write, attend a fund raiser thing, eat, write, write and write.  Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them.  So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, after which I shall hopefully continue writing up a storm.
