THE AUDITIONS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we had our auditions at LACC yesterday for the LA show – about three-and-a-half hours and we saw about thirty-five people. There were no-shows (the students are required to audition whether they like it or not) – the no-shows were all due to illness, but just about everyone we saw was sick. I don’t know what’s going around but I don’t want it. I met with the set designer prior to the auditions and he was sick. The faculty person who’s with me on this show was also sick. Needless to say, I’m popping Sambucol and Airborne like crazy. It was good to hear everyone and I think we’ll have a fine cast of players, once I go through my notes and make some decisions. I will have to come back next week and see the five others that I didn’t see.

I have to tell you, the traffic going back to the Valley at seven-thirty was so retarded and so ridiculous it was mind-boggling. It was so slow until we passed Hollywood and then suddenly, out of the blue, you could go sixty-five. I just don’t get it and I never will get it. Ever. Once home, I watched the fourth episode of The Jinx – it’s really an interesting documentary and I’m looking forward to finishing it today. I had a combo platter of my various Beer nutmeats whilst watching. After that, I went to the piano and worked on the new song, and while I was sitting there another idea came to me and suddenly I was playing a really catchy tune and beat and so I’m now writing a second new song, but this one has a different feel than anything else in the show and it’s perky and will be done by a trio a la The Andrews Sisters or those groups.

Prior to all that I’d had a sleepless night due to my brain thinking about the first new song. I think I only got about three hours of sleep. Then the helper came by and she organized the garage, so that’s good. We’re about to start going through boxes so we can either do a yard sale or just toss as much as we can. It’s just too much damn stuff. And we’re going into the storage facilities and do the same thing there. I went back to bed and maybe I dozed off for about fifteen minutes.

Then I went and had a cup of clam chowder and a turkey sandwich for my meal o’ the day. Then I came home, did some work on the computer, and made the event page for the Kritzerland show. Then I moseyed on over to LACC for the set designer meeting and auditions.

Today, I must be up early for she of the Evil Eye will be here and I’ll have to go do stuff until she’s gone. I may even go back to bed once I come home. I know I’ll finish the documentary and I know I’ll be working on the two new songs – if both make the show that’s seventeen songs, which is probably enough, and anything else to talk about I’ll do with monologues or sketches. That said, there are two potential songs that could come in – if that happens I’ll try to do them all, but I may have to at that point start thinking if I’ll use everything. I think that will be a fairly easy thing, once I start to figure out the flow of the show. But seventeen to nineteen songs in a two-act revue really isn’t overkill, I don’t think. I’ll also write the commentary.

Tomorrow will be more of the same, and then we have the Sami birthday dinner at Genghis Cohen. Next week there are endless meetings and meals, I’m sure I’ll see the book galley and hopefully approve it, and I’ll be really getting on people to get me the LA material that I’ve been promised for ages and ages. And then I’m sure I’ll be picking up the slack and writing whatever we’re missing. I would have thought people would have been all over this, but it’s a little shocking to me how slow everyone’s been.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do stuff, work on songs, write a commentary, and then relax and watch something fun. Today’s topic of discussion: A serious topic – where do you think this sickness stuff comes from. I’m of the opinion when there’s this much of it affecting so many people that it just doesn’t come out of nowhere. Interested to know your thoughts, especially paranoid ones. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy we had our auditions.
