Happy Birthday, Jennifer!

Thanks. I'm a little bit sad because my mom is out of the country and I won't get to see her or talk to her today.

And she traveled on your birthday!!! ;)

Is she someplace fun?

She's on a cruise in Hawaii. She been gone for a while already.  My nieces were actually quite upset that she would be gone on my birthday. To them birthdays are sacred. My little niece made sure that my mom would be back in time for her birthday. She's mentioned it a few times.

Awww, your mother had better not miss her granddaughter's birthdays ;)  I'm sure you are happy she is having a good time on the cruise, at least I expect she is.

I meant to say "WHEN Harry Met Sally"...not WHERE.

Spoo. I hate when that happens.

There was a 24 hour deli in Santa Monica at 5th and Wilshire by the name of Zucky's.
The food was just ok, but it was always fun, and you never knew who would pop in.
Saw Buddy Hackett a few times, and couldn't miss hearing Rodney Dangerfield ordering take-out at the deli counter, in that distinctive voice.

For DR JMK:       :D

Nice review of "Pillow Talk", but I will nitpick your comment about Doris Day:

She was never showy, and she frankly never really was cast in anything totally demanding...

I submit "Love Me or Leave Me"...very demanding, very dramatic and very Oscar-worthy, IMO, even though she wasn't nominated.

And as perfectly at ease as she was in her Universal comedies, "comedy is HARD".  Very few dramatic actors have ever done it well or successfully.

Did you not read my comments about LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME, which pretty much echo yours?   ;D

There is a huge issue going on in the book blogging community this week.  I don't know if anybody here has seen something called IMM (In my mailbox). It's a meme that is on most book blogging websites every Monday. It shows what the blogger got in the mail that past week.

Anyhow every time a blog posts this IMM they have to give credit to the originator The Story Siren. She is probably the biggest YA book blogger on the internet.

Anyhow a few days ago a huge scandal came up with her and 2 other blogs. They are fashion blogs and they had proof that she had plagarized a bunch of articles from them.

This has a lot of people very upset. I would love to see the posts to compare them. But from what i gather she did not copy exactly. But she took all the ideas and all the points and presented them as her own.

I am curious if she will stop blogging. There are a lot of people who don't want to use her IMM meme anymore (the bad part is this is the best meme ever IMO).  There are some people sticking up for her. And a lot of people who are fuming.

There is proof that she did it (and the ironic thing is that she had posted being very against plagarism in the past).  They have her being on their websites. They have dates and times. And she admitted it.

Scandal!

I still wish that someone had posted the exact posts so we could see them ourselves to see how similar they were.

Bruce it is a shame you didn't discover Nate 'n Al's until it began going downhill.  I find it totally surprising since you lived walking distance from it.

I have no idea which was the first deli we went to.  I can't remember not going to deli's.  Mostly we had a big deli Sunday brunch at home.  Lox, bagels & cream cheese, chopped liver, white fish (which I didn't eat) new pickles and scrambled eggs I often made.  There was always a stop at the bakery for dessert.

Following brunch & a short rest we would go burn off the calories at the tennis courts, everyone except my mother.

Hmm, brunch must have been after Sunday school on the days we went.

My ASK BK Question (a day late, as usual):  reading the Bricusse commentary included with the songbook reminded me of your long ago mention that you were going to release the 52 song demo collection that Jacobs put together for GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS.  Whatever happened to that project?

Ah, the heady days of one's first deli.  The cheese blintzes at Diamond's Deli, Severance Center Mall in Cleveland, around 1970.  Pre- and post-movie food, and a blissful discovery.  Can't have a blintz anywhere without recalling that.  Thereafter (whilst still a student in Cleveland):  Solomon's Deli, and Corky & Lenny's, both of which I think were in Cedar Center.

Fast forward to the years in L.A., where my attendance record turns suspiciously spotty:  Factor's was a favorite now and then.  Nate & Al's a couple of times.  Canter's once or twice.  (Did you know Canter's used to be a theater called the Esquire, hence the somewhat-marquee-style sign?  I didn't either till recently.)  There was something in the Beverly Center I indulged at a few times, don't remember the name and it's probably long gone.  Anyone remember the Carnegie's short-lived appearance in Beverly Hills?  Is there still an outpost of the Stage in Century City?  First time there was on my way to the Lawrence of Arabia restoration at the Plitt.  What else?  If Jerry's -- on Ventura? -- is the place I'm thinking of, I did enjoy that a few times when on some Valley mission or other.

Nowadays I swear by the Carnegie and its pastrami and cheesecake and kick-ass waiters.  The Stage looks great but never quite satisfies.  Katz's is wonderful for what it is (and I've just discussed that backhanded compliment with friends who grew up within walking distance and swear by it) -- an old neighborhood takeout hole with a great neon sign, where the Experience is to die for, but the food is more to do die From.  One chap calls it the crude version of famous deli food, and I'd go with that.  But don't miss it.

Laura, there are several locations for Chompie's....
Paradise Valley Mall, Scottsdale and Shea, near ASU on University, and Chandler Village.
If you're in any of those neighborhoods, check it out!
Great bagels.

Today, we're having a retirement party for a staff member who's retiring after 25 years or so.  I'm part of the festivities.

Be afraid...be very afraid!
