Chris Cooper, last year's winner, whom I've admired since LONE STAR.

Shouldn't the tribute to Bob Hope - the Oscar man of my late, lamented youth - been just a LOT longer? ?  ?

Chris Cooper is a character actor; he needs no work. I loved him in LONE STAR, too.

I was disappointed with the clip they showed from "Return of the King", although it brought a few tears to my eyes.

I expected the more bravura "Lighting of the Beacons" sequence...but I guess that was too long.

I think they were probably afraid to make it any longer. He'll be mentioned in the IN MEMORIUM segment, too, and there are plenty of young folks who have probably never heard of him, sad to say.

Yes, that RETURN OF THE clip brought tears to my eyes instantly remembering where it came in the film.

I went to LONE STAR to see Matthew McBongo, and was turned into a Chris Cooper fan.

Well, we now know exactly how things are down under!  Wow! that Adam Eliot sure knows how to dress, and just what to say when winning.

I went because of John Sayles, and ending up loving the film, the story and the stars.

I thought it was a dulcimer.

Just to be contrary:

Chris Cooper may be pleasing in many respects, but he has "Richard Chamberlain bags" under his eyes.  A little work would be miraculous for that.

Chamberlain could use some work, too.

Listen, that's what happens when you get older, you get lines and bags.  these people who have work are fools - it's not natural and looks bad.

What in tarnation were those horrid Cold Mountain songs.  In my estimation (IME, in Internet lingo) those were the absolute nadir of any nominated song ever.  Although I'm hearing this Return of the King song and it's just as bad.

S. Woody here: A dulcimer is played with mallets.  It is the next of kin to the zyther, and a close cousin to the autoharp.

What Sting was playing was operated with a crank, and appeared related in contsruction to general string instruments of the era, such as the guitar and fiddle, but much more obscure.

Ian McKellan has had those same kinds of bags for many years. On some people, they just aren't a problem.

I found the COLD MOUNTAIN songs to be virtually identical; though, I've always been a fan of Allison Krauss.

On the other hand, I adore "Into the West," a remarkably simple song with strong sentiment, tied to Tolkien and the films, made all the more memorable by the divine voice of Annie Lennox; who along with Tolkien and Fran Walsh, contributed lyrics.

All of the nominated songs are still better than last year's winner. Quite like the LOTR song but I certainly needed a few listens.

I am fully cognizant of what happens when folks age...having attained 55 years myself.  Extreme work looks bad, I agree.  But a small touch here or there can be a spirit lifter and an image enhancement.

"Into the West" was OK, but I'd rather have an Arlen tune.

I can see it now:  a chorus line of Hobbits singing,  "Forget your troubles come on get happy!"
