What was the classic film Druxy and others were recommending a few weeks ago--some heartbreaking thing (with Marie Dressler, maybe?) on Warner Archive.  They're having a sale and I thought I'd pick it up, but now I can't remember what it was.

I may have recommended something, but I don't believe it was a Dresser film.

Great movie.

My favorite Marie Dressler films usually also feature Polly Moran.

And now, I'm off to see Rent at Capital Playhouse.  It should be very good.

Until later!

I just finished watching THE AFRICAN QUEEN.  Got it for $17.00 at WalMart.

Fantastic restoration, and the 1-hour "Making of" documentary is one of the best I've ever seen.

What if actors had nicknames like prize fighters?  I bet we could think of some nice ones.

Why does John McCain in every photo I see of him look as if it were taken one minute after the rabies vaccine arrived too late?

DR EDISAURUS's story about her documentary reminded me of a story in one of Phillip Roth's novels....about the Indianapolis Clowns....a minor league baseball team in the 1920's.

One of their outfielders had lost an arm in WW I.  When he fielded a ball, he would jam it into his mouth, shake off his glove, and then throw the ball back into play.  He was always afraid that he would lose the ball, so sometimes, he pushed it in so hard, he couldn't get it out, and his team mates would have to throw him on the ground and pry the ball out of his mouth.

At the end of the season, the coach was looking at the stats and told the team.  "We didn't lose those games because of our lousy pitching or our lousing batting.  It was those inside the mouth grand slam home runs that killed us."

The world skating championships are in Turin (site of the 2006 Olympics), so the men's short program results are already posted. No huge surprises, but the Japanese are not sweeping the podium quite yet.

I really hope you get to see it.  Some amazing men's performances!

RE: the JEWS ON FIRST reference.

I think that is a valid point. What age is the target of the movie. And what age would not get the reference.

I know the reference. And i'm guessing anyone older than me would know it.  But ask some 20 somethings. I'd be curious how many would get the joke.  Although i guess if they don't they can just think it mean first base.

I guess that's not the title then....perhaps DR DRUXY will check in before the evening is over.

I just bought a new computer, so I don't have $55.....in fact, I don't have $5.

No, I think you're right, because I just this moment remembered it was a Leo McCarey film.  It either must not be an Archive title, or at least is not included in the sale items.

See previous post.

When I went down, I watched THE SINGING KID. "Kid" is a decidedly operative term since Jolson must have been 50 when he made this. This is the film that introduced that song that later became a cartoon standard "I Want to Singa." Not a bad film until the preposterous climax. And Cab Calloway has some fine moments in some musical numbers.

Very obvious Al was on the downside of his movie career, though, since he wasn't billed above the title. That was also a big surprise.

If any of you get AFRICAN QUEEN on BD, tell us how it looks.  Just don't know if I feel like springing close to $40 for it right now, what with two mortgages and all.  :)

Then I put in the first disc in THE CLOSER's fourth season box set and watched the first two episodes.

The first one had to do with the fire in the park and guest starred Jason O'Mara. Speaking of Jason, since his series LIFE ON MARS went off last season, I haven't seen him guest starring around the networks at all, and I've really missed him.

Amazon had reduced the price to $23 this morning, but that's still more than I'll pay for it, wonderful as it is. When they're selling the Blu-ray of OUT OF AFRICA for $17.99, I think it's reasonable for THE AFRICAN QUEEN to be priced similarly.
