Thanks to the NY Times I know that that excellent documentary "Avoir et Etre", -- To Be and To Have, to you! -- has finally reached the States.

I recommend it STRONGLY, if it plays near you!
Briefly said, it's about the French educational system seen in rural France.

That documentary has had a phenomenal success; so much so that the teacher in the film, now retired, is sueing the "director" for a slice of the pie!
Money spoils averything, ain't that right?

I guess he could not just BE, had to HAVE!

I thought it was "To Have and Have Not," but then again, I don't even KNOW how to whistle. . .and don't call me "Steve!"

From the gossip mills I've been reading, it would seem that Prince Charles may indeed be the QUEEN.

DR François: Does that mean I should persist with this French language learning programme? I am impressed that you know Britney's work. Ah! But of course. The Disney connection.

Wish me a warm hand on my opening
Or crown me Queen for a Day
But don't give me no crisp crap
I'm not a celery stalk

And if I need some cheesecake flavoring
There's a bodega right downstairs
But don't give me no crisp crap
I'd rather take a walk

Let us
Appreciate lettuce
Arugula
A true Gullah recipe hint.
A brand new twenty...
Let's have plenty
Straight from the mint
But please don't make me squint

If we're to sit and sing of solid waste
I have one standing rule
As I take my seat, don't give me crisp crap
I prefer a softer stool.

This is what I've just found on THE BETTY HUTTON SHOW site:

"In 1993 Betty revealed she had Epstein-Barr syndrome, the disease which leaves one feeling tired and drained of energy, an ironic ailment for her. And as a devastating blow, in 1996, the reverend Father Peter McGuire died.

Betty Hutton had lived in Rhode Island 25 years and spent them working to help despairing church members with her experience and with the help of her friend Father McGuire by her side. After the death of the Reverend, Betty’s friend and songwriter Jay Livingston suggested she return to California. Betty moved back to the sunny state wanting to be close to her daughters again with aspirations of becoming a lecturer at Universities around Southern California. And in 2000, Betty did a fascinating intimate interview on Turner Classic Movies’ “Private Screenings with Robert Osborne”. This amazing one-hour interview is a goldmine of information and a treasure of love and appreciation.

In November 2000, Annie Get Your Gun, Berlin’s Musical wonder, was finally released on video after having been restricted from public viewing since 1978. According to modern sources, Irving Berlin, who retained the music rights, refused to allow the picture to be shown commercially. But now, Betty is shown in full digital color, singing splendidly "You can't get a man with a gun!" for all the new generations to enjoy.

As for Hutton, 80, she was last located in Palm Springs, California and gave a small interview in the July 2000 issue of TV Guide. Surprised at the attention surrounding her stupendous appearance on Turner Classic Movies, and of the applause given her by the crew on the “Private Screenings” set, Betty responded brightly:
“Oh my God, maybe they think I’m somebody else! God is so good to me, sweetheart, he really is.”

Bless her heart!

Well, it looks like another record breaking day. I haven't been on since 5pm and we're already at 10 pages.

The cabaret Reddy to Go, a "musical theatre tribute to Helen Reddy" was cute. The woman was great. Spot on as the English say. The man was weak. He isn't a strong enough singer to pull off his part. It needs a better directorial hand since at 1 hour it felt a little long.

Mr. Pulliam, sometime this weekend we will find out what happens at 500 posts. Maybe you get a new title and become a Global Moderator emeritus.

At least tomorrow when I wake up I can sit in front of my computer at home and read the posts not thinking "I should be working".

I could have sworn QUEEN FOR A DAY was done at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, but if not there, the only other guess I have is the Cocoanut Grove. I still think it's the former. The show ran until 1965!

Mr. Oz, you're getting up there also. Only 80 more for you to reach 500. Alas, it will take me more time, even though I'm at around 310 since I'll be errant and truant from Tuesday through Thursday.

Our stats are going through the roof! Ron, you've taken over the spot as top poster, displacing our own BK.

Looking forward to tomorrow's notes and the topic of the day. Since they probably won't be posted till about 3am NYC time, I won't see them for quite a while (it's 11:06 here now).

Queen For a Day was done at the Pantages Theater.

The new version of Queen For a Day is on BRAVO and is called Queer Eye For the Straight Guy.

Pantages? OK. That seems reasonable. I thought it was some hotel ballroom.

No, Queen for a Day was NOT done at the Pantages theater.  The Pantages was a thriving movie palace in those days.  While I can't swear it was always broadcast from the same place, for most of its years it came to you live from Frank Sennes' Moulin Rouge on Sunset Blvd. and Vine - which later became the Aquarius Theater.

Next trivia: Who plays the Press Rep (uncredited) in the final dressing room scene in Gypsy?  If you use the imdb you will be disqualified, so tell the truth.

I remember that some of the women would be crying so hard trying to tell their story that Jack basically had to tell it for them. That just killed me as a little kid watching. And then three of them ended up losing which just ADDED to their hard luck.

Seems almost sadistic now in retrospect.

my uncle Tom suggested that she and a friend go to Queen For A Day at the Pantages (pictured at left in LA's Diamond District). She and her friend went down to try and get into the show. You had to go across the street from the Pantages to actually get the tickets and then return to Pantages and stand in line. When they got to the ticket window, the girl told them that the show was 'sold out.' She also told them that sometimes the ushers kept extra tickets in case the audience chairs weren't completely filled. My mom and her friend flew across the street and asked the usher if he had any extra tickets. "Only two," he said. My mom took them and the other three people who had come looking for tickets, were left out on the street, so to speak! My mom told me the procedure that took place. Once you got in line, someone came around and gave you a card and you wrote down your 'wish'. Then they did sort of a impromptu interview with you

BTW I did not write this I took it from a website

Well, it was never the HOLLYWOOD Pantages, that much I can tell you.  The Queen for a Day sign was plastered on the Moulin Rouge for as long as I can remember - that was where it was taped live.  I don't misremember these things.  When I saw The Three Stooges in person there (as written about in Kritzerland) I remember the sign as if it were yesterday, that QFAD was filmed there.
