Since our esteemed BK daily gives us words, I have one he may find interesting:

CRAPAUDINE

It refers to a method of preparing a bird (chicken or duck, for example) for roasting.  The backbone is removed with either scissors or knife, and then opened up and turned over.  The breast is flattened by pressing hard on the breast bone.  The result is a flattened bird, which is easier to roast than it would have been when left whole.

The English term is Spatchcock, but the French is, as nearly always, deliciously evocative, n'est pas?

CP-I knew you would have a great list of names.  I like a number of the names in Dragonheart, especially Bowen & Draco.

I just found Draco on a list of dog names http://www.cyberpet.com/dogs/dog_names/index.html

Cillaliz, thanks for the links & photo.

For a fraction of a nano-second I almost responded to the first “Who’s John Galt” question.

Hello, all!  I arrived safely in Ohio around 11:15 EDT, and I am now at my brother Randy's house.  The dogs Max and Mattie are thrilled I am back.  I spent the afternoon in the ICU with my dad, who looks frailer and older than I've ever seen him.  The doctor says it isn't so, but Jo Ann and I both believe he's had a stroke:  his words are slurred and it's quite hard to understand anything he's saying.  I honestly don't know if we are now on deathwatch or he'll pull through this setback.

His doctor believes he's been playing too hard since he's been feeling better:  too much playtime with friends during the day, from breakfasts with his cronies to bluegrass music in bars with his lady friend.  The doctor believes my dad's lowered immune system has picked up some bug and he's trying to diagnose it and get my dad's health back in line.  I hope this succeeds.  He's on an IV saline solution for dehydration and, when I left, the nurses were giving him an antibiotic IV.  I hope I have better news tomorrow.

I began reading Donna Tartt's THE SECRET HISTORY on the plane.  anybody else read it?  I always liked Restoration and 18th Century comedy names:

From RAPE UPON RAPE:  Mrs Squeezum
                                       Ramble

From THE RELAPSE:  Hoyden Tunbelly

From THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL:  Lady Sneerwell
                                                       Lady Teazle

It is hot as heck in Rehoboth Beach.  Our house is filled with dog flop.

Marty is flopped at der Brucer's feet, Fletcher has flopped here in the study, Buster and Mikey are flopped near the front door, and Bonnie is flopped on my bed.

Elmore-at least you are reading an entertaining book, funny names.

Maybe it is just the dehydration & stress that is creating the stoke like symptoms.  Continued vibes!

Jane, I will always honor your request.

elmore - is your father insane?  Can anyone speak to him and tell him to SLOW DOWN.  He was lucky enough to be feeling better after his last serious problem, and that is not the way to behave.

Back from many errands, lunch, and a nice rehearsal with Kevin.  Fun to work on the act again.

He's always been a strong person and he refuses to let any of is tie him down.  I believe, if he comes through this round, he will finally listen to his doctor and take it much easier.

DR Nursie, the names, alas, are not from THE SECRET HISTORY, which is a gothic novel set in a college like Bennington, which the author attended.  The book could use a Mrs Squeezum, in my opinion.

In defense of elmore’s father, not that he should have done it, he just wanted to have fun after being sick for so long and over did it.  I really can understand.  It’s a bit like the last time I skied.  After wrapping my knee around a tree I refused Keith’s offer to go down the hill by way of the ski lift.  In my heart I knew this was going to be the last time I could ever ski.

One might say if I hadn’t taken the last run down the slopes I would still be skiing today.  In that case I doubt it.  In elmore’s father’s case taking care of himself was more important-he just didn’t grasp it.

So elmore, I’m sure he gets it now so please be gentle with him.

DR Elmore - I'm glad you made it safely back here to Ohio.  These parents of ours can be pretty stubborn and independent, can't they?

It is obvious he just wanted to have fun, and no one can blame him for that.  But reality is reality, and I hope that he will learn a lesson.

Meanwhile, my dear pal David Wechter is going through horrid health issues, dealing with some cancer and chemo and really reacting poorly to the chemo.  Difficult times for him so let's send him some excellent vibes and xylophones.

I have a headache today.

Don't know why.  Guess it's sinus-related, although I believe myself to be breathing freely.

Perhaps it's just something in the air....

I'm really looking forward to this weekend. In addition to my friend, Steve, who's coming for his class reunion and staying with me at my parents' house, my sister, bro-in-law and one of my nephews will be with my parents at the lake 15 miles away.  My nephew, Jon, and I have always really hit it off. He's 23 and a little lost, he's in college and does all the graphics for a local tv station, but he just doesn't know what he wants to be.   I think he likes hanging with me because I tell him I'm still not sure what I want to be either, I'm just being a lawyer while I try to figure it out.
