Thank you all once again for the Birthday greetings.  I have had a nice day and a nice week, actually. Although I didn't plan to do it, I ended up spending one on one time with a number of friends this week, lunch with a former colleague, lunch with a friend I haven't seen for a while and tonight drinks with my friend whose son was killed.  We had been doing one of those "Let's get together" sort of things for a long time, but not doing it. I called today and when she heard it was my birthday, we met.  It was really nice to actually be able to talk one on one with people I like.

No, it's definitely sharp, but guess what?  It's because it's been "processed" (as some wise man once said).  Believe it or don't, that's legendary session flautist Bud Shank--he did his solo in two octaves and they double-tracked them, giving it that weird out of tune flavor.  You can hear producer Lou Adler talking about it if you download the file on:

http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/features/patc/californiadreamin/index.html

which, as you may have guessed, is a whole feature on the creation of the song.

Hmm... Now I'm kind of confused/weirded out.  I could have sworn that the flute solo was really out of tune, but now that I've listened to it a few more times over the past hour -  :-X - it doesn't sound as bad as I thought it did, well, as I remembered it sounding.  Maybe I'm used to it now.  ;)

Party games...I remember a game called "Spoons", played with a deck of cards and spoons, which was kind of hilarious, but I can't remember how it goes, exactly...

Oh yes, I remember spoons...

WE also had quarters, a drinking game.

Let me see....

Charade, Pictionary/ Win Lose or Draw, Taboo, Pit, Twister (a local variation of the board game), limbo, Karaoke, Scene it! and Trivial Pursuit.

Some of the outside party games we did were

Auntie I over,  Snipe hunting, horse,

Next I watched the screener I received this afternoon for the upcoming British release CASHBACK. It's a charming tale of a young artist getting over a devastating break-up by taking a job in an all-night supermarket. There he meets a kooky congregation of workers one of whom helps him get over his love blues.

SInce he's an artist, he sees the world often in still life rather than motion, so those moments, and his fixation on the nude female form, propel much of the action.

I liked it. It had charm and the director had a unique way of illustrating what went on in the artist's mind, a somewhat different kind of take on Walter Mitty-like daydreams.

They've been advertising this heavily on HDNet Movies.  It's evidently going to be broadcast for one night there before its general theatrical release.

Like I said, it's definitely out of tune--but I think it's owing more to the overdubbing, hence bizarre overtone ratios, than to his actual playing.  Bud Shank was a master (I think actually he's still alive and living in good old Pt. Townsend, WA, where he has a jazz festival every summer).  Plus, obviously, his solo has some flatted 5ths that are supposed to sound "blue."

I just listened to it. I'm a flute player...well I started college as a flute performance major, anyway, it doesn't sound too bad to me, there are some bent tones, intentionally, and it is the low register, which is harder to play.....are you sure the guitar is totally in tune?   ;)

He's also playing with his tone, it's breathier in some places. I used to love doing jazz flute stuff with flutter tongue etc. He's not doing that here, but I don't think all the effects are overdubbing, although I've been wrong a time or two

Actually no. I haven't had any cake at all today.  I did have some sushi and a California roll, a great breakfast and one of those lousy Sonic burgers to soak up the margaritas I had during happy hour, but no cake.....I'll just have to keep celebrating and have some tomorrow....I did have 2 German Chocolate cupcakes last Sunday at a friend's birthday party

Well if you're talking drinking games, there's always "Bob" where you take a drink every time they say "Bob" during the old Bob Newhart Show

We played "King George" on July 4 during 1776. Well, any time they referred to King George.

Of course, I had a Diet Pepsi with lime and DR Sandra had a Cherry Coke.

I'd certainly never heard of "Tenderloin" when I first heard and loved "Artificial Flowers" DR td.
"Beyond the Sea" will always be at the top of my list too. The "That's All" Album is one the truly greats of its time.

I was agreeing with you--I think it sounds waaay sharp at times.  I've always thought it sounded weird.  It wasn't until I found the NPR "article" with Adler talking about the overdubbing that it sort of started to make sense to me.

Sorry, no.
BUT, I did see, on dvd, THE ROMAN SPRING OF MRS. STONE.  I was thoroughly mesmerized.
To think that two future Bond gals would be sharing screen time with Scarlet O'Hara/Blanche DuBois as well as BROADWAY MELODY's Bessie Love and BRIDE OF FRANKENSTIEN's Ernest Thesiger!
Vivien Leigh was outstanding, shame that her film career wasn't more productive - after STREETCAR, there was only one other British film between this, then came SHIP OF FOOLS. . .

Well here's my utterly pretentious "masters thesis" quote o' the day:  The entire history of 20th century jazz can be seen as the evolution, both conceptual and literal, of the flatted 5th to the sharped 4th.

Discuss amongst yourselves.  ;)

Saw this bird outside my kitchen window this morning. Couldn't have been more than 2 inches tall. First time I'd ever seen a yellow bird in my little postage stamp backyard (I mostly get ducks, robins, blackbirds, and cardinals. And the occasional muskratty type thing, as I live right by a manmade pond.

Anyone know what it is?

I would say some sort of finch

Well, I managed to watch last night's and tonight's episodes of "So You Think You Can Dance?"...

There really wasn't a routine that I didn't like.  Yes, there were better ones, but, all in all, I found them pretty good.

As for who got sent home... No real surprises there either.

It wasn't until a few years ago that someone pointed out to me just how out of tune the flute solo is in the song "California Dreaming"

That has always bugged me, as has the out of tune flute in the original M*A*S*H theme song. (I think they fixed it in later versions.)

And I think the Saint instrument is a piccolo, but I bet DR Elmore would know for sure!

Not as familiar with James Bond...

My DH was alarmed when he heard the instrumental CASINO ROYALE theme and I started singing lyrics to it---"Have no fear, Bond is here", etc.

He didn't believe that there were actual lyrics to this and thought I was making them up.

Burt Bachrach, not at his best, IMHO...
