Well, you've read the notes, the notes were an experience, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently at Costco buying huge things of cud.

LA TIMES (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-gaylegal6-2008nov06,0,220763.story)

Quote
Gay rights backers file 3 lawsuits challenging Prop. 8

Lawyers for same-sex couples argue that the anti-gay marriage measure is an illegal constitutional revision

Lawyers for same-sex couples argued that the anti-gay-marriage measure was an illegal constitutional revision -- not a more limited amendment, as backers maintained -- because it fundamentally altered the guarantee of equal protection. A constitutional revision, unlike an amendment, must be approved by the Legislature before going to voters.

The first action was filed by the ACLU, the National Center for Lesbian Rights and Lambda Legal. Santa Clara County and the cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles also sued, and Los Angeles lawyer Gloria Allred filed a third suit on behalf of a married lesbian couple.

All the lawsuits cited the constitutional revision argument, and two of them asked the court to block Proposition 8 from taking effect while the legal cases were pending.

Good morning, all! I have a trip to Toyland followed by a physical therapy session, and perhaps - if the HMO is still dragging its feet on the therapist's request for a second referral from last Thursday - a stop at my HMO to verbally kick ass.

I'm having a good tme with Loesser score; I'm still amazed at how quickly Don Walker and Red Ginzler scored such a large score and handled the big revisions out of town so quickly. This new computer score is quite beautifully done, and a lot of my criticisms have less to do with wrong notes and copy errors and more to do with the aesthetics of reading the score and how it all looks on paper.

After physical therapy, I think I'll return here, work a bit on a hymn arrangement for a good lady I'm quite fond of, and get back to Act One of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA.

I like Costco (have one 5 minutes away). But i never buy fresh food there. I find the prices very high. But good for some bulk non-perishables. I think they have great prices on books, although unfortunately they do not have more french books, than english ones.

They can sometimes have amazing scrapbook stuff (at great prices).

And they have really cheap food at their restaurant (and good snacks).

Very interesting choices so far.  I would, of course, have to include Jack Cardiff's brilliant Black Narcissus, as others have.  But I'd also include Sundays and Cybele, which is one of the most gorgeous black and white films ever, William Fraker's work on Rosemary's Baby - no, it's not a show-off film, but the color photography is brilliant, as is John Alonzo's on Chinatown.
Title: Re: THE COSTCO EXPERIENCE
Post by: bk on November 06, 2008, 08:05:12 AM
I would include no modern film on my list because all modern films use way too much CGI to change color and lighting.
Title: Re: THE COSTCO EXPERIENCE
Post by: bk on November 06, 2008, 08:06:35 AM
And I would be remiss not to include the Von Sternberg/Dietrich films, again some of the most gorgeous black and white photography ever - its like will never be seen again.  I also think Joseph Ruttenberg's photography of It's A Wonderful Life is brilliant.

I am going to valiantly struggle to get my two 14 disc boxed set reviews finished today.  This evening is the recording session for Pacific Pops' "heavy metal" concert.  The 12 year old guitarist friend of Gabe's I enlisted to play guitar, after telling me for a week he had been practicing, had his mother call us last night to inform us that in actuality he had lost the music and had not been practicing.  Oy.  So I have nascent feelings of disaster about the recording session tonight.

Nascent Feelings of Disaster is, of course, the title of the next Pacific Pops session.

Good morning all.  Toby and played a few rounds of an amusing game of "who can stay awake longer" last night.  Current score:  Toby - 3, Mommy - zip.  We begin by getting into a semi-comfortable position in bed to nurse...and I sit in the dark and hope he falls asleep and I can move him ever-so-carefully on to his bed beside me, and then roll over myself.  Two hours later I wake up with a crick in my neck from leaning against the wall, with a happy baby sleeping cozily up against my body...his preferred place to sleep.  By that time he's hungry again and we start the game over.  Someday, I will win!

In other news, Toby is exactly two months old today!

Update on DFIL - Jed's dad is still in the VA hospital in Seattle.  They aren't able to find any sign of infection that could be causing the white blood cell count to be so low (it was hovering around 200 yesterday, for those who might understand numbers) so their best guess is that there is something wrong in his bone marrow that is causing the white blood cells not to be produced.  There are medications he can take that will hopefully solve the problem.  He's having a bone marrow biopsy today and we should hopefully know more after that.

Thank you all so very much for the continued vibes!!! DR Jed and I both appreciate them.

You might try one of these:

Designed by a pediatric physical therapist! This developmental pillow is more ergonomic than others, and more versatile, too. Bend or twist it as needed — it's terrific for nursing, sitting, self-feeding, and tummy time. Unlike evenly stuffed pillows, it's flatter at the curve for baby's comfort and baby can't slide off, either (a common complaint with the leading pillow). Healthier for treating reflux, thanks to the correctly angled wedge accessory. Includes prop roll. Made in USA. For newborns-15 months.

Available at ONE STEP AHEAD (http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=533801&cmSource=CrossSell&relatedProductId=534187)

You might enjoy the site - I spent a small fortune "outfitting" my daughter and Grandlads there.

I would include no modern film on my list because all modern films use way too much CGI to change color and lighting.

I know the topic was "photography", but to most viewers what counts is what's on the screen, not how it got there. The correct use of computer tools to adjust lighting as opposed to electric lights or camera/film manipulation is just a creator's choice of tools to effect an artistic visualization.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/07/us/politics/07palin.html?ref=politics

"Asked Wednesday whether she still believed that Mr. Stevens should resign, Ms. Palin was circumspect, saying only that the people of Alaska "just spoke" on the issue at the ballot box and that "they want him as their senator." She said Mr. Stevens should decide "what happens next." (Mr. Stevens could still be forced to step down, and Ms. Palin is widely viewed as a potential candidate for his seat if he does.)"

Re: Sarah Palin -- When she and Joe Biden debated, I thought she acquitted herself extremely well.

I wish she had campaigned with the same degree of pleasant civility.  I was favorably impressed with her, and then one day later she was vilifying Obama.  It seemed to me she was WAY out of her league in that mode and she did herself and the campaign a great deal of harm.

The brightest spot in the campaign, entertainment-wise, was Tina Fey's rapturously perfect "takes" on Palin....and Palin's good sportsmanship on SNL belied the "shrill harpy" antics in GOP crowds.

The following is a treatment for FRINGE an Associated Press Story
 (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,447964,00.html)

Quote
Army Working on 'Ghost' Soldiers, Mind-Controlled Guns

Self-regenerating body parts. Intelligent "virtual soldiers." Mind-controlled weapons. Brain "wipes" to purge traumatic memories. "Quantum ghost imaging."

The U.S. Army's working on all of these concepts, according to a report on Military.com, a private military-oriented Web site.

"Making science fiction into reality" is the goal, says Dr. John Parmentola, the Army's director for research and laboratory management.

"You can imagine people who have horrifying memories, it would be great if we could eliminate them so this way they're not plagued by these memories uncontrollably," he says, explaining research into cleaning soldiers' minds of recollections that cause post-traumatic stress disorder.

Salamanders have long been known to grow back fingers and even limbs, and the Army's trying to figure out how.

"We're beginning to understand how this occurs and if we can, it holds the hope of, being able to regrow limbs on people," says Parmentola.

As for "quantum ghost imaging," it involves the strange but well-documented phenomenon of "twinned" particles that communicate instantaneously -- if something happens to one, the other reacts accordingly, no matter how far away.

I am so glad that we're no longer discussing politics.      ::)

Can't we discuss politics without trashing candidates, just the basis of how things work instead?

Example, fromDR Jose:
Quote
I think we all have to keep in mind that Senator McCain was not the one who picked Governor Palin as his running mate.  She was picked by his advisors and the heads of the RNC.  It is well documented that Senator McCain and Governor Palin had never even met before under the guise of considering her as a potential running mate.  They met for a few hours at a Governors function.  That was it.

I wonder who he wanted, and why did he permit himself to be persuaded to go with someone else.  It is one of my big issues with how the VP is chosen.  Either it should be someone who reflects the person who was the first pick for the party, or the runner up should then be VP.  I don't know, something different than how the VP is picked-maybe separate elections.  I realize there are problems all of these.  More so for McCain than with any other election did I feel the party choice should have selected a running mate closer to himself, highlighting the differences that separated him from his party & the current administration.

I picked up my DHL package - my early birthday present to myself.  I really took a chance on this - it's a new DVD set from France - the complete works of Jacques Demy, including all his short films - tons of extras, and so many films I've never seen, especially some of his last films, which never had US releases.  The chance was that on amazon France or the other French sites I checked there was no information about English subtitles and my greatest fear was that except for Umbrellas and Young Girls (for which I figured they'd use the same transfers as before and therefore have subs), that these could all be in French with no English subs.  Well, I'm happy to report that this was one chance that worked out - everything in the set has English subtitles.  I checked the transfers of Umbrellas and Young Girls - they're the same source material but look a little more solid.  I then put in Une Chambre En Ville - this is the first time it's ever been released anywhere on video - it looks and sounds great, and I'll be watching it later this afternoon.  But I'm so excited to see his short films and Lady Oscar and Traffic and his film with Yves Montand and Mathilda May (which I only saw once on the old Z Channel), and so many others, most especially his English-language film, The Model Shop, shot here in LA and also never before available.  The box is gorgeous and each DVD is housed in a slimline case.  The set is very expensive but given the number of films included (14, plus the shorts) and the extras (not sure if they'll be subtitled or not, but there are a lot of them), it's actually quite reasonable.  It's 100 euros, which is about $150 US.  I shall be in Jacques Demy heaven for at least a week, and let me tell you that is heaven indeed.

ABC - UGLY BETTY, GREY'S ANATOMY, LIFE ON MARS
NBC - comedies, ER
CBS - SURVIVOR, CSI, ELEVENTH HOUR
CW  - SMALLVILLE, SUPERNATURAL

Tonight, we were supposed to have rehearsal at the Capital Playhouse space and stage a couple of numbers, but I got an e-mail from our stage manager saying that that has changed.  We're still going to have rehearsal, but it'll be at The Midnight Sun, which is a much smaller space, AND it'll just be a read-through, so a large space is not needed.  So, I'll still have to record tonight's ABC line-up.

I guess I can be honest and say that at the beginning of this diet for the first time in my life I topped 200 - I began the diet at 201, but I suspect that two weeks before that, when I'd begun running again, that I probably weighed 203.  I'm now down to 166 and I am buff and toned with abs and buns (oh, those buns) of steel.  When I went to the Gardenia, I wore my  khakis and my shirt tucked in - haven't tucked a shirt in since the last time I lost weight - back in the summer of 2006.  I've now lost five pounds more than that 2006 weight loss.

I was listening to the news today and heard an amusing story...

A town in west central Minnesota had a tie for one of their races. There were four candidates for teh two open position on the city commission and all four had votes within a few votes of each other. The first place person was won by three votes but the next two candidates were tied. There was a recount and still they came out as tied.

to decide the race they had the two candidates draw cards and the high card won. One guy drew an 8 of spaces and the other a queen. The guy who drew the queen won.

A similar thing happened a few years ago in the same town and they flipped a quarter.

Can't we discuss politics without trashing candidates, just the basis of how things work instead?

I wonder who he wanted, and why did he permit himself to be persuaded to go with someone else.  It is one of my big issues with how the VP is chosen.

Long before Palin was publicly mentioned I did by own research trying to find a "best pick" candidate. The ticket needed some one who was not a Washington insider - so that ruled out Senators and Congressmen. The choice needed to balance the ticket - white men need not apply. Because of the age question, someone under 55 would be best. The choice could not further alienate "the base" or the election would surely be lost.

My initial choice was Linda Lingle - the Jewish women Governor of Hawaii - but because she is so pro-choice, she would have enraged "the base". That left Palin as the last candidate standing with a Governmental background. Limited research suggested that her real-world actions were much more moderate than her ideological credentials - making her sort of a "stealth" candidate. Baring discovery of a Titan of Industry who could meet all the other requirements, I went with Palin (this was back in March!)

As a matter of practical politics, it does little good to have your "second best" candidate as a VP choice if you don't end up with a winning ticket.

Granted, long before I actually supported such a choice I would have wanted more extensive investigation.

Ann, if you shorten the number of well deserved vibes for VixMom you will keep us out of wide screen.

When I got in, I immediately put on the movie of TROPIC THUNDER. It's funny, and I enjoyed it, but the review copy is the 2-disc director's cut which has put back in 14 minutes of footage cut for the theatrical release. Those 14 minutes (plus about 10 more) should be taken back out. At 121 minutes, it's just too long, and I got very restless at the climax of the movie wanting it to be over.

There are two commentary tracks, and I sampled both of them. Ben Stiller (as writer and director and star) is on both tracks. The others in the first are member of the production team. Co-stars Jack Black and Robert Downey, Jr. (who stays in character) are on the second one. They're both OK tracks, but who wants to listen to 4 hours of commentary.

Can't we discuss politics without trashing candidates, just the basis of how things work instead?

I wonder who he wanted, and why did he permit himself to be persuaded to go with someone else.  It is one of my big issues with how the VP is chosen.

My initial choice was Linda Lingle - the Jewish women Governor of Hawaii -

My initial choice of women, of course I too would want to know more about her.

I just think the VP pick should represent the party Presidential pick, not someone who doesn't. ;D (I'm in a hurry & must walk Sherlock)

Just watched FIRST A GIRL....the English Jessie Matthews movie that was some of the inspiration for VICTOR/VICTORIA.  It was an okay movie....and Mr Edwards certainly took several plot points for his movie.

The movie rests on Matthews who is not the prettiest or most talented gal in the flickers, but she does a pretty good job as Victor....worth seeing if you are a V/V fan.

TOD:  I am very partial to the work of cinematographer Arthur C. Miller, who worked at Fox in the 1930s and 1940s on some of the most brilliantly photographed B/W films ever, including (but not limited to) "The Rains Came", "How Green Was My Valley", "The Mark of Zorro", "Brigham Young", "Son of Fury", "This Above All, "Immortal Sergeant", "Ox-Bow Incident," "The Song of Bernadette", "The Keys of the Kingdom", "Dragonwyck", "A Royal Scandal", "Anna and the King of Siam", "Gentleman's Agreement", "The Razor's Edge" and "A Letter to Three Wives."   Miller was a master cinematographer who shot in sharp focus with deep blacks and glorious highlights which were often credited as a "Fox look".  He also lent a special magic to Shirley Temple's screen image by lighting her blond curls from behind in several films.

Glorious color films I've enjoyed include "Blood and Sand", "The Red Shoes", "Black Narcissus" and many Freddie Young-shot films, including "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Ryan's Daughter."  Leon Shamroy's cameras were magic, as well, in such glorious color productions as "Leave Her to Heaven", "The Black Swan", "The King and I" and "Cleopatra."

Nearly all of the Vincente Minnelli M-G-M movies feature gorgeous color photography, I'm really partial to the look of YOLANDA AND THE THIEF and THE PIRATE; MEET ME IN ST LOUIS is also lovely.

Francis Ford Coppola's films always have interesting uses of color, whether or not the film is good or not:  ONE FROM THE HEART, THE OUTSIDERS and RUMBLE FISH (black and white AND color); THE GODFATHER and FINIAN'S RAINBOW are both beautifully photographed in color.

I mentioned A PASSAGE TO INDIA earlier, but, the other color films of David Lean which impressed me with their photography were DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, RYAN'S DAUGHTER, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, SUMMERTIME, BLITHE SPIRIT and to a lesser extent, THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI.  There is lovely black and white photography in his GREAT EXPECTATIONS and BRIEF ENCOUNTER.

And then there's Hitchcock's THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY's heavenly technicolor as well as the diffused colors of VERTIGO and TORN CURTAIN.

Musically speaking, I like the cinematography of:
HALF A SIXPENCE
THE SOUND OF MUSIC
THE KING AND I
VICTOR/VICTORIA
HELLO, DOLLY!

Good Evening!

Well... I ended up back at MoMA this past afternoon.  I made one last brief pass through the Kirchner exhibit which closes this coming weekend, and, yes, I also paid another visit to the Van Gogh.  -Even though my "visits" were brief - and even a little bit hurried - I still found and noticed new-to-me things in both exhibits.  And even though I've read all the poetry and prose selections in the final room of the Van Gogh exhibit a number of times, some of the selections seemed very "fresh" to me today.

...And since I noticed that the MoMA Audio (WiFi) guides had been updated, I also checked out the new Miró exhibit again.  Thankfully, the galleries were not at all crowded on the sixth floor, and the MoMA Audio guides - along with a docent who was giving a personal tour to some guests - really helped me to understand and appreciate some of the more "blunt" works in the exhibit.  I still need and want to spend more time in the final three rooms.

The reason I had to "hurry" through MoMA this afternoon was due to a very leisurely late afternoon lunch in Cafe 2.  ;)

I treated myself to a Salumi and Cheese Platter.  It's a Pick-It-Yourself assortment (three of each) served with flatbread and olives.  So, today's salumi selections: hot sopressata, speck, and wild boar cacciatorini.  And today's cheese selections: sottocenere, castelrosso, and gorgonzola cremificato - basically, not-"stinky" to "stinky".  However, all very yummy!

*And the gelato/sorbetto trio for today: toasted almond, pumpkin, and honey-crisp apple.  :)

Now it sounds like the perfect time to see a doctor to get a physical as well as to get your blood levels checked.  ;)

To the DR who asked within the past few days about why the judges require the contestants on "Food Network Challenge" to move their cakes/creations from the work area to the judging table, well...

Even though their is a "showcase" element to those competitions, there is also a very practical element to them too.  If those bakers/chefs were to make those creations in "real life", then they would have to transport them to the event venue.  -And that would involve much more than walking it five to ten feet from one table to the next.

Does anyone have a DVD/Video of a good stage production of MAN OF LA MANCHA?

Not the movie, thank you very much.  :-\

I was in two different productions and I think I have a videotape of one, but it's buried in a box in my garage.  I don't know how "good" they were (either the productions or the videotaping of), but they certainly weren't "bad."  How soon would you need it?

I need some moderate, peace-loving intervention here:

On another board there is much discussion about blaming the black churches for the defeat of Prop 8.

Dialog -

Quote

HIM:

This results in a landscape in which
the heterosexual of color is given a free pass.  The
call for "greater outreach" without acknowledging that
there is massive homo-hatred among people of color is
exactly that - a free pass based on past injustices.

Yes, it is important for gay folk to confront homo
hatred regardless of the cultural context. It is
also necessary to hold people of color responsible for
the pervasive homo hatred that is often pawned off on
the unsuspecting gay community as "respecting the
culture."

ME:

That seems to be looking back - shouldn't we be trying to move forward without belaboring how we got here.

HIM:

While that might sound very nice and wholesome,
remember that what you're espousing is exactly what
black people like Booker T. Washington did in the
early part of the twentieth century.  Look how far it
got them.  The tumult of the post WWII civil rights
era was necessary to move black people forward.  We
gay folk need the same kind of tumult, which starts
with an acknowledgment of past wrongs.

ME:

Why can't we start off with "a conversation" that includes mutual respect, then move on to the required acknowledgement - I can't see a gay tumult doing much more than attracting headlines, not changing hearts.

HIM:

Why not let's start out with the idea that we have
something to be angry about?  "Queer theory" lefties see homosexual
difficulties as bourgeois inconvenience when compared to "real oppression

Let's engage in some healthy anger.

So now I'm cast in the role of a quisling wimp.

Blessed be the peacemakers, for they shall be called the Sissies of God.

DR DER BRUCER - I'm assuming that you've already brought up the fact that "white churches" were also responsible for the passage of Proposition 8 (and 102 in Arizona and 2 in Florida).  The Knights of Columbus - the Catholic's men's organization - was the other main proponent of Prop 8 in California.

Proposition 8 was the result of religious leanings, and not one of racial biases and mores.

*Which relates to the question I've been coming across quite frequently in this discussion - and which I mentioned earlier: Is it really possible to separate Church from State? and vice versa?

**And it's also the one issue I have with gay couples truly wanting a "full marriage" in the eyes of the State and the Church.  Yes, I understand growing up Catholic, Protestant, Methodist, etc., and wanting to be married in a church by a priest, but just like heterosexual couples, they would still need to have a civil ceremony to make it legal.  I know some people are upset that President-elect Obama does not support "gay marriage" - which he has clearly stated is based on his religious beliefs, but he does support equal rights for homosexual couples on a civil level... Again, how fully can you separate State and Church?

The Mormon church and the KofC had been previous addressed. The issue at hand was the free-ride that the black churches had received.

The"unexpected" electoral event that tipped the scales on Prop 8 was the large new-voter turn-out of blacks for Obama who were overwhelmingly anti gay-marriage.

According to statistics, in Florida and California at least, the "white" vote would have allowed gays to marry - the black vote is what upheld the ban.

Of course those statistics are from Rush Limbaugh, so don't know how much credence you want to give to it.

Apparently, black community organizers not only got everyone registered to vote, but also bussed them to the polling places - and probably stood behind them while they voted, too...

I wonder how Farrakhan et al feel about Rahm Emanuel as Obama's chief of staff.... from what I've read of him (admittedly just today!) he would seem to be someone who should have been fired and sent for a psych evaluation a long time ago. Again, there were still "religious whites" (and "religious blacks") who supported and voted for the ban.  -And since these propositions were determined by actual popular vote, every vote did count.

Separation is actually quite simple: leave the Sacrament of Marriage to the church - get the state out of the "marriage business".

Have the state deal with the legal aspects of familial units by enacting gender-neutral civil unions.

Support for the "separate but equal" civil unions approach does not quite make it (unless you amend all civil codes to draw a total equivalency between "partner" and "spouse").

Actually, the position for gay couples in CA is still pretty good - the existing civil union statutes even provide state tax breaks - and Prop 8 doesn't take away many tangibles.

The situation is much different in Florida where Prop 2 attempts to remove the existing protections afforded to domestic partnerships.

For most gay citizens, the full civil union's route would be a giant step forward in Equality. In CA the frustration is great because we are so close to true full equality.

I would be most content if the Federal Government would leave the control of defining familial units to the states. If a state says you are a member of a "union", then you get Federal treatment equal to married folk (Tax benefits, SS survivor benefits, etc).

Why do people think that when you tell them you're watching a DVD so you can review it, that it's not work and thus they can just chatter away like you have nothing better to do. I LOVED UGLY BETTY tonight! Some great storylines, interesting character development. And wasn't that guy that Marc was with HOT! (Of course, I like Cliff, too.)

Oh, and forgive me if this has been mentioned before, but if you want to see Obama flip the bird to both Hilary and McCain, you can watch the video of it here:

http://themuntabquestion.blogspot.com/2008/11/obama-flips-off-hilary-and-now-mccain.html

Just STOP IT!

Those "birds" are obviously unintentional, and I see those "accidents" happen all the time in all types of situations.  Sometimes I even see "double pumpers".

*And, yes, I'm sure if you scour enough footage you could find McCain, Palin, Bush (Jr. and Sr.) doing the same thing.  -Actually, I have seen "W" scratch his forehead with his middle-finger before during a press conference.  Yes, it gave me a giggle, but I never would have interpreted as a form of insult or denigration.

I agree with you Jose, I have seen the bird many times and notalways used in a denigrating fashion. Also the body language did not match the gesture. From my own experiences you know when you get the bird

GREY'S ANATOMY had a couple of storylines that had be on the brink of tears. Some good writing tonight, and some excellent performances.

He's cute. Very spunky. Of course, I'd have to catch him and probably have to tame him first.

Are you speaking of DR Barnum?

And I loved LIFE ON MARS, too. The USA TODAY critic really blasted tonight's episode of LIFE ON MARS, but I found it quite moving and very involving. (Of course, he doesn't like THE SHIELD at all, and I love it.)

Yes!  -And I know him too!  One of the "benefits" of the show now being filmed in NYC.

*And I loved how they managed to not show Shake Shack in the scenes they filmed in Madison Square Park.  ;)

I just finished watching it, too.  I totally agree with you that they shouldn't have put the extra footage back into the film.  I started getting bored with it before the halfway point.

I wish that these studios would just release the theatrical versions of films and leave the deleted scenes as deleted scenes.

Well... Since we seem to be going down this road again today...  And since I believe the following is a very level-head "response", well...

Jeff Edgerton - Broadway actor, and fellow Facebook-er - posted the following "Note" on his profile.  I will only post the opening paragraphs, but his Notes are open to the "Public" - "Public" meaning members of Facebook" - but the full text is also able to be shared via e-mail.  So, if any non-Facebook-ers would like to read the rest of his Note, just PM with your e-mail address and I will forward it to you.

*And not all of Jeff's "Facebook Friends" have agreed with his stance, but they have enjoyed the resulting discourse.

Why the Republicans lost: An Objective View on Moral IssuesShare
Wed 2:25pm

Since it seems that so many people I know claim that I know a lot about politics, and that I am a pundit-in-waiting of sorts, I thought that it might actually be time for me to put my money where other people think my mouth is, to coin a phrase. While it’s patently clear where I stand with regards to our recent election, I’m going to attempt to be as objective as I possibly can and illustrate some reasons why and how the chips fell where they did, at least from my perspective.

First of all, I don’t want to deny that race has played a significant factor in this election, but I believe it is a symptom as opposed to the actual disease itself. I grew up in a small town in South Carolina where, despite the egregious amount of waving at intersections and “Hey ya’lls”, there was always an undercurrent of racist bias. There were families sitting in rocking chairs on patios telling the latest racist joke. There were grumblings about a certain part of town where “those people” were always causing trouble. These people are still alive today, and due to the continuation of that doctrine in many households, the bias has continued unfettered, and the electoral map reflects that bias in the Southern states. I hear people like Oprah Winfrey and Jesse Jackson saying things like there is “a shift in consciousness” or a “paradigm shift in America’s view on racism”, but I can’t help but think that they know those statements are false. Racism exists in this country, and it always will. Racial bias will always exist, and the only reason it was overlooked this year is that Obama did not run on the basis of “white guilt”, like many of his predecessors. The concept of white guilt is an essay unto itself, but rather than delve into the complexities of race, I want to dwell on the disease itself, rather than the surrounding malaises that exist.

And on that Note - literally - it's time for me to get read for bed.  I start playing auditions tomorrow morning at 9:30... Down by Union Square.  So, I have to leave here a bit earlier than usual.  Sleep will be a good thing.

Goodnight.

I found the ties to the present very interesting too.  There are more hints to what is really happening, but I'm not so sure that they aren't just red herrings.  I am really enjoying this show.

What's so frustrating is that with seamless branching they can have it both ways. The viewer can elect to see the theatrical cut or the new cut with all those deleted scenes. I don't know why so many studios have stopped using that feature.

I've begun Demy number four, after checking out various transfers.  A film I've never heard of or seen called Parking, a version of Orpheus.  Very interesting so far.  A total bomb at the box-office and with critics and the public.  I'm only ten minutes in, however, so we'll see how it hangs together.  Demy was not well thought of in the 80s - none of his films did well - in fact, after The Pied Piper, nothing did well, and several of them were completely reviled and that includes Une Chambre En Ville, about which I'll have much to say in the notes.

That "seamless branching" can be a little tricky.  I watched FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL a month or so ago, chose the theatrical version, and the movie skipped all over the place, backwards and forwards.  The disc even said that there could be problems with certain players.  [I have a 2 year old Sony, so go figure.]

We had a perfectly perfect recording session tonight with the Pops.  I am so proud of this group, some of whom don't exactly read music fluently, for they have worked their behinds off and learned some fairly difficult arrangements.

In other news, what's everybody ordering this time 'round at DDD?  I always forget stuff that's come out, so I like to see everyone's list.  So far I think I'll get the Get Smart complete series set, since I don't think I'll be getting that to review, and Baraka on Blu-ray.

I'm through viewing for tonight and will finish Parking tomorrow, my day off.  I have an annoying errand to do, which I'll do pre or post run, haven't decided yet.  But that's all I have to do.  All packages have arrived save for the one from France, which I don't think has even been sent yet - we'll see if they respond to my e-mail.  If not, I'm going to cancel and order the item elsewhere.
