Well, you've read the notes, the notes informed you that the weekend is here, and now it is time for you to post until the weekend cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: PANTAGRUELIAN!
-
And a very happy haineshisway.com birthday to JB-NY, whomever that is.
-
Happy Birthday to JB-NY, who only has posted twice. :)

So, I was just watching "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" and the last guest was Tony Bennett, so I started my DVR a-recordin'. He sang "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Anyway, the picture that they showed coming out of commercial showing that you're watching "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" is this (I took a picture of the TV with my camera):
-
I thought that it looked familiar. Then I remembered...it's the cover of Closer Than Ever (http://www.amazon.com/Closer-Than-Ever-Original-Recording/dp/B000003EZV/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1260606759&sr=1-1)! It's just different music. ;)

Someone on "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" must be a fan of Maltby & Shire...or musicals...or Brent Barrett, the World's Sexiest Man Alive (WSMA in Internet lingo)!
;D
-
DR George - I am amazed that:
1] Your picture of your television came out so clearly, and
[2] That you so quickly identified the source!
Congratulations! :D

TOD:
Funny you should ask, bk! I'm making a huge batch of this for the choir party on Sunday evening after our Lessons & Carols service:
The Silver Palate's Chicken Marbella - a wonderful go-to party dish. Except that I'm using boneless, skinless chicken breasts and reducing the cooking time accordingly.
One of the finest dishes ever to come out of the Silver Palate Cookbook, this chicken marbella is first marinated in oil, vinegar, capers, olives, prunes, and herbs, then baked with added brown sugar and white wine. While prunes and capers might seem like an odd combination, when cooked together with chicken they create a delectable sweet and sour, savory flavor. The original recipe calls for the chicken pieces to be marinated all night. We found that marinating for 5 hours worked fine.
Chicken Marbella Recipe
Ingredients
2 chickens, 2 1/2 lbs each, quartered, bone-in, skin-on
1/2 head of garlic, peeled and finely puréed
2 Tbsp dried oregano
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 cup pitted prunes
1/4 cup pitted Spanish green olives
1/4 cup capers with a bit of juice
3 bay leaves
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white wine
2 Tbsp fresh Italian parsley or cilantro, finely chopped
Method
1 In a large bowl combine garlic, oregano, salt and pepper to taste, vinegar, olive oil, prunes, olives, capers with caper juice, and bay leaves. Add the chicken pieces and coat completely with the marinade. Cover and let marinate, refrigerated, several hours or overnight.
2 Preheat oven to 350°F.
3 Arrange chicken in a single layer in one or two large, shallow baking pans and spoon marinade over it evenly. Sprinkle chicken pieces with brown sugar and pour white wine around them.
4 Bake for 50 minutes to 1 hour, basting frequently with the pan juices. Chicken is done when thigh pieces, pricked with a fork at their thickest point, yield clear yellow juice (not pink).
5 With a slotted spoon, transfer chicken, prunes, olives, and capers to a serving platter. Add some of the pan juices and sprinkle generously with parsley or cilantro. Serve remaining juice in a gravy boat.
Serves 5.

Saturday morning greetings! Our household is up early for today's graduation festivities at the University of Cincinnati. DS Rob is receiving a BA in philosophy and Faith Prince is receiving an honorary doctorate and delivering the commencement address.
Film at 11.

Thank you to DR Ron Pulliam for the lovely birthday wish posted after I signed off last night!
-
Saturday and it is a work day. Thanks to all of the vibes from friends here at HHW - I am feeling a bit better, so I will be working today. Oh well.
-
My favorite chicken dish is when we had three hens and only one rooster - oh the stories I could tell.
-
Good morning, all! I have a trip to the NYPL planned around noon as well as a few neighborhood excursions. My major goal this morning is to work on the last act of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA, which I want to turn in early next week. Tonight, I am seeing Mr Kevin Spirtas' play.
I need some coffee.
-
Off to work. Oh well.
-
Good morning.
-
I am feeling a bit better
:) :)
I will be working today.
:( :(

Whew! It's 9:15 AM. I have done email, walked the dog, done a bank errand, and been to the diner for a breakfast of whole wheat pancakes and crispy bacon.
And now I'm back home and getting ready to do a boatload of grocery shopping.

At least you have a car in which to put your boatload of groceries. We, on the other hand, have to use a Granny Cart and push our purchases along the street to taunts and whistles from rude members of New York Society ;)

And the word of the day is: PANTAGRUELIAN!
And The Song Of The Day Is: GIANTS IN THE SKY

I'm eating my oatmeal with dried fruit. Later I will shave and shower and then head over to our holiday part at 3pm. It's a cold day but getting warmer as it progresses. They say it will be 38 at the high.
-
I woke up early but then went back to bed and stayed asleep until 9:15!
-
Congrats to Rob on his Graduation Day!!!
-
Good morning!
It was cold this morning (not as cold as yesterday), but I bundled up a bit and took my walk. I didn't get nearly as cold as I thought I would, and it was a very refreshing walk. However, rain is moving in later today and will continue throughout tomorrow, so I may have to do treadmill tomorrow, not a happy thought.
-
I am delighted to be done with Mel Brooks and free to watch whatever I want today. The Blu-ray(s) I end up watching may depend on what comes in the mail today, but I think I may finally get to WATCHMEN today. I know it's very long, so that may comprise my entire evening slate of viewing. But the contents of today's mail will seal the deal about what I inevitably wne up viewing.
-
I do know I will watch UGLY BETTY while I eat lunch today, and I'll likely get to THE OFFICE today, too.
I can also continue with my Photoshop project which got postponed when THE MEL BROOKS COLLECTION arrived a week earlier than I thought it would.
-
I don't have any chicken recipes to share, but I did want to mention that my mother made the best fried chicken ever on the face of this planet. She never shared the recipe with me, so that knowledge of what she did to make it so special went with her to the grave. But I'll never forget how much we looked forward to fried chicken night at home.
-
The only special dish I do with poultry is barbecued cornish hens. When I have people over for dinner, this is what I almost always cook.
-
Things seem very quiet on the internet this morning. I'm heading down now to watch a PERRY MASON episode before I start thinking about what's for lunch.
WBBL.
-
Congrats to Rob on his Graduation Day!!!
Indeed, ditto!!!! :D
-
Things seem very quiet on the internet this morning
Not if I have anything to say about it! :)
-
Congratulations on your graduation, Rob!
-
DR Ginny, I never thought he'd graduate but stay a student for a very long time. Is that a sigh of relief I hear? :)
Tell Rob congratulations!
-
Congrats to DS Rob!

I am patiently waiting for PA's Department of Transportation to arrive. There is a huge ice flow directly in front of our house which is making driving quite risky. It is the fault of the neighbors on the hill who refurbished their driveway but did not put a lip at the bottom for the water flow. Now the water run-off merely runs and runs across the road and when temperatures drop, ice happens. Lots of ice. One could successfully re-sink The Titanic here. (Hyperbole can be fun).

Happy Saturday morning.
Listening to the Beach Boys sing holiday songs. I can't remember If I ever liked the Beach Boys, the answer must be no, since I can't remember. I think I also place surfers in the same category as skate boarders. Just annoying to be around.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And... That's a good thing. Well, at least something. (Ah, almost a Company reference!)
-
Must get organized for my plethora of errands out and about in the rain today.
Warm and cozy vibes for the day.

And for my fellow East Coasters...
Good Afternoon!

Did I miss something on what happened to monkey ?
-
I really like Dean Martin.
-
So...
Around 7:10 last night, I remembered that I was supposed to be seeing Handel's "Messiah" last night at Carnegie Hall performed by Les Violons du Roy and La Chapelle de Québec (http://), so...
Thankfully, the trains were running on time, and I made it down there with 10 minutes to spare. I met up with my friend, Bradley. He was tuning the organ and harpsichord for the group, and they gave him a set of comps, so...
We actually only ended up staying for the first half. -Which was basically the original plan anyway. He checked in with them at intermission to see if the instruments needed a touch-up tuning, but everything was OK, so...
But it was a good concert - at least the Christmas portion. One of the soloist was countertenor, David Daniels (http://www.danielssings.com/home.html), and it was nice to hear him again.
*Needless to say, that was not his costume for last night's presentation. ::)
-
Did I miss something on what happened to monkey ?
I dunno? Did something happen to Monkey?
;)
-
After the (first half of the) concert, Bradley and I met up with another friend, Jeff, and we headed on over to Casellula for a late dinner. And some wine. And some port. 7-year and 20-year aged. And some madeira. Needless to say... Well...
Good Morning!
;D

Last night I went to the Metropolitan Opera to see the new production of Les Contes d'Hoffmann, one of my very favorite operas. I enjoyed it very much. For the most part, I found Bartlett Sher's direction to be engaging and interesting, but Michael Yeargan's set design to be somewhat less successful. I thought it was fairly inspired for Olympia's act one, and Giulietta's act three, but somewhat puzzling for Antonia's Act 2. But I must say that I thought musically, Act 2 was just stunningly beautiful. I was particularly impressed with Kathleen Kim's performance as Olympia.
The House was sold out for last night's performance. Two things struck me while I was there. First, the pricing. The orchestra and parterre are extremely expensive at the Met -- well above most people's price range on any regular basis. Yet, the Met manages to have a very broad pricing structure. You can get standing room upstairs for only $15, and seats in the upper boxes for only $20, which is also the price of standing room at the back of the orchestra. There are many different price ranges between $15 and $300. People who love opera and want to "be in the room" can be, at a very affordable price. And the price is the price -- anyone can access those seats at the box office or online on a first come, first served basis. You don't need to be "in the know" about any special discount codes, papering services, clubs, insider deals, or anything like that. It made me wonder why Broadway Theaters, many of which are struggling to find audiences for the shows they house, can't adapt to that model more. There is no reason why 8th row side mezzanine should be priced the same as third row center orchestra. Maybe if they regularly made tickets available for $20, $30 and $40 in the mezzanine, and similar (albeit higher) pricing scales in the orchestra -- and you didn't need to know the secret password to get in on the deal -- it was simply the regular price of the ticket -- they would have better success selling those seats, and attending the theater could once again become a regular activity for people living in the Greater New York area, like it used to be.
The second thing, was just how thrilling it is to be in that Grand venue, looking down (I had one of the cheap seats) and seeing nearly 60 musicians in that orchestra pit, and about the same number of performers on stage, when the full chorus was present. 120 people!!! And you can get all of that for as little as $15. What a deal that is!
Lastly, another thrill for me that James Levine was conducting. I feel like I've grown up with him. How many operas I've seen over the years with him at the helm. Quite a history he has there.
-

DR Julie - Do you know Ives' "Memories"? Your account of your evening at The Met reminded me of Memory A: Very Pleasant:
We're sitting in the opera house;
We're waiting for the curtain to arise
With wonders for our eyes;
We're feeling pretty gay,
And well we may,
"O, Jimmy, look!" I say,
"The band is tuning up
And soon will start to play."
We whistle and we hum,
Beat time with the drum.
We're sitting in the opera house;
We're waiting for the curtain to arise
With wonders for our eyes,
A feeling of expectancy,
A certain kind of ecstasy,
Expectancy and ecstasy... Sh's's's.
:)

*And The Met also has a great - and VERY popular day-of discount ticket program: Varis Rush Tickets (http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/varis/index.aspx). All seats are $20, and sometimes you even end up in the Orchestra sitting next to someone who paid $250+ for their ticket.
-
That's wonderful Jose!! I didn't know it before - but it captures the feeling of the moment so perfectly. I will never stop staring with elation as the chandeliers start to rise towards the ceiling. It's one of my favorite NY moments. I'm awed every time.
-
And...
Starting on January 7, Lincoln Center will have their own day-of discount ticket booth set up in their newly refurbished David Rubenstein Atrium (http://new.lincolncenter.org/live/index.php/atrium). They will be selling day-of discount tickets for all the Lincoln Center venues:
Alice Tully Hall -
Avery Fisher Hall - Home of the New York Philharmonic
David H. Koch Theater - Home of City Opera and ABT
Jazz at Lincoln Center
Lincoln Center Theater*
The Metropolitan Opera
*I've actually been "communicating" with the Atrium staff via Twitter lately, and when I asked how their own day-of discount ticket program would affect what they send down to TKTS, their latest response was: "We're not sure". It could get interesting.
-
Jose - about the Varis rush tickets -- do you happen to know if this is only applicable to performances that are not sold out in advance, or if they actually hold back from sale 200 seats to ensure they will have rush tickets for every performance, whether "sold out" or not?

Yay!! and Wow!!
So the Vivian Beaumont and Mitzi Newhouse are not participating in this - or is that what they meant by "we're not sure"? I assume the Jazz at Lincoln Center means that Rose Hall and the Allen Room will also be listed.
How fabulous to have another discount ticket booth just for LC events!

There are some limitations:
-They're only available for performance from Monday-Thursday.
-They do try to set aside at least 200 tickets for each performance if 200 tickets are available for that evening.
-It really is quite a popular program. People start lining up as soon as the garage opens at 7:00am! However, sometimes the line isn't that long if it's a production that's been in the repertory for a while.
-For some productions - like Doctor Atomic last season - they will "extend" the program to weekend evenings and the Saturday matinee. All depends on ticket demand. Additionally, they will sometimes just offer a special $35 ticket pricing on the day of the show. First come, first served. -That's how I saw Doctor Atomic from the 15th row last year. :)

It will include the Beaumont and the Newhouse. They're just trying to figure out how many to send to TDF and how to many to keep for themselves. *I'm suspecting that any unclaimed house seats may end up at The Atrium. :)

Miss Dixie Bell and I had a run in the cemetery. When we were driving back, PennDot was a-salting our road. Yippee! Still, they should have been plowing and breaking up the ice and removing the ice. . .tomorrow morning there will still be ice, it will just be salted ice. . .

Here's a recipe for chicken wings I worked up earlier this year for a food Web site I run called SavorSA. The photos are on the site, but they apparently don't want to appear here. So check out the full pix at http://www.savorsa.com/2009/09/truffle-wings-a-touch-of-gourmet/
Truffle Wings
Oil for fryer
1/3 cup truffle flour (see note)
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
Salt, to taste
Pepper, to taste
24 chicken wings
Sauce:
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1/2 cup red wine
1/2 cup heavy cream
3 tablespoons black truffle butter (see note)
Preheat oil in fryer according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Combine flours, salt and pepper. Dredge each wing in the flour. Place in fryer six at a time. Shake basket or stir to make sure they don’t stick together. Cook until wings are done, which is usually when they float. Let drain. Repeat until all are cooked and drained.
For the sauce: Melt the butter and brown it. With heat at medium and butter browned, stir in red wine. Keep stirring, though this will foam and crackle and hiss. Once the red wine has reduced and is thickening, add the cream and keep stirring until it is incorporated. Let the mixture reduce some more. Then stir in truffle butter until it has melted into the sauce.
You can either serve the sauce on the side of the wings or toss the wings in some of the sauce. Use any leftover sauce on steak or chicken. When reheating sauce, stir it briskly to reincorporate ingredients.
Note: Truffle flour and truffle butter are available at upscale supermarkets such as Central Market. Store unused truffle flour in as air-tight a container as possible and keep in the freezer until next use; a little goes a long way in terms of flavor.
Makes 24 wings.

Good morning, everyone.
It is Moving Day here. Of course, the kids (my roomie's grandsons) are usually here at 8 am. Today, since I wish to give them their gifts, then leave, they're late. Sigh. I shall finish packing, shut down the computer, and then must be on my way, kids or no kids.

DR John G due to my little mishap i don't believe i have welcomed you properly.
WELCOME NEW DR JOHN G! Do you have any pets?

Cilla, have you checked if you can get DSL in your building?

Gotta scoot.

I've just written an obscene amount of checks to pay Kritzerland bills, but that's done, with only a few more coming this year. I've been to the bank, and then I had a call from Nick Redman reminding me we were supping this evening at Genghis Cohen - glad he called because I had completely forgotten. It's a late birthday dinner, and I can't wait to have my orange chicken and green beans and maybe the sole - we'll all share everything, of course. Rain seems to have abated for the moment, and I'm waiting to hear from a local dealer whether I should drive over to him and deliver a big box o' CDs and get the dough for same, which I could use given the obscene check writing of earlier this day.

I love the TALES OF HOFFMANN, but then almost all the DRs know my obsession for the theatre music of Jacques Offenbach, which runs from grand opera to what I consider early theatre of the absurd. I really wanted to see this edition of Hoffmann, but friends at the dress were unconvinced about this new production. my favorite DVD is the John Schlessinger production with Domingo for the Royal Opera, but I have a fascination for the Michael Powell film, which often strikes me with the feeling of oh dear, Sir Thomas Beecham has fallen into a demented window dresser's chic-est display for 1950. At the same time, I think much of it is glorious in its over-the-top style.

I've been to the library and I've just proofed Act Three, Scene One of MOST HAPPY FELLA. After I finish typing up my notes, I will take a break before I head into midtown for tonight's play. I think I will stop by FINIAN'S RAINBOW and deliver a few "Christmas Mornings" to our company manager and a couple of the cast, particularly Chris Fitzgerald, Cheyenne, Jim Norton, Terry White, and Kate Baldwin - I want to wish her well for her show at Feinstein's tomorrow night. I'll be at Brent's show.
I just had a slice of a delicious pizza for lunch and I'm back to the notes.

I've been playing Christmas music all day. Do you know what I have decided is my least favorite? "The Little Drummer Boy." Hands down.
-
Back to Frank Loesser.

Seen on a bumper sticker:
I brake for no apparent reason.

Congrats to Rob on his Graduation Day!!!
DITTO!! ;D
-
What a delightful afternoon of viewing I've had. I began by watching three PERRY MASON episodes so I could finish up with disc 4 in the set. (Disc 5 has three episodes on it.)
Once again, Perry is more of a detective than a lawyer in two of the three cases, investigating crime scenes and slipping out onto the fire escape once the police arrive. They certainly didn't do these kinds of things in later seasons of the show.
One episode didn't have him in court for a single second. He solved the case without going to trial.
-
I've been playing Christmas music all day. Do you know what I have decided is my least favorite? "The Little Drummer Boy." Hands down.
It's not a favorite of mine either, DR Elmore.
-
Then I watched this week's UGLY BETTY, the pregnancy scare episode. I can't believe intelligent straight people having sex in 2009 and not using protection for both disease prevention AND unwanted pregnancy. I mean, these people aren't in committed relationships; they're sexually active and they're not using protection? VERY foolish.
Some funny stuff here, but that's not a good message to be sending out.
-
Then I watched this week's episode of THE OFFICE. Oh, my, at long last, a potential boy friend for Oscar....
and played by the very handsome 24-year old son of Tim Daly! Be still my heart. (I still think the father is a dreamboat.)
-
I then started watching this week's SUPERNATURAL rerun, but I only got halfway through. This is the one where Dean is zapped five years into the future and gets to see the world in five years and interview himself after a five year estrangement from his brother. Effective episode, and some really great lines, too. Seeing Castiel as a stoned hippie was also hilarious.
-
I do have WATCHMEN ready to play when I go back down. It's over three hours long, so I hope it holds my interest.
-
DR George - I am amazed that:
1] Your picture of your television came out so clearly, and
[2] That you so quickly identified the source!
Congratulations! :D
1] Who knew?? ;D Evidently, you can take pictures of Hi-def TVs much betterly than CRT TVs, and
[2] Closer Than Ever is one of my absolute favorite musical reviews...WSMA, you know. ;)
-
Dear George, nice camera.
Thanks. It was inexpensive to begin with and I got it on sale, also! However, the batteries don't last very long. :P
-
Closer Than Ever is one of my absolute favorite musical reviews...WSMA, you know.
And the score ain't half bad, neither! ;)
-
I'm heading down in a few minutes to get started on the three-hour WATCHMEN. I have a few computer maintenance issues to take care of first.
WBBL.

I think I followed that car this morning.

Well, there is that, too.

Back from delivering a big box o' CDs. It wasn't raining when I left, but boy did it start like crazy about five minutes into my drive. As always, the usually insane horrid LA drivers become more insane and more horrid the minute wetness hits the pavement.
-
And might I just say page FOUR?
-
You'd think it was a rainy Saturday or something. No packages again - very annoying.
-
Looking forward to Genghis Cohen in a couple of hours.
-
We've got seven GUESTS.
-
I'd recommend someone getting off their ASS and posting, that's what I'd recommend. I'm tired of looking at page four.
-
It's really pouring.
-
I make seven posts and we're still on page four.
-
So it is written, so it shall be done - page five.
-
Let's try and get to page six, shall we?

I'm going to head into midtown now. I've finished the second scene of Act Three and tomorrow I'll do the Appendix numbers and type up the notes.
-
Iwas overcast most of the day today, but the sun has been shining for the last hour-- quite nice. However, I am really hoping that we get some more rain tonight and tomorrow.
-
I'm listening to the new two CD set of The Fugitive soundtrack - the Harrison Ford movie. It's one everyone raves about, but I suspect it's just another case where people saw this at a very young age and love everything about it. The music by James Newton Howard is okay, but nothing spectacular, at least to my ears.
-
Not that that many people ordered it here, which was a little shocking in itself, but I'm a bit surprised no one who DID order it has gotten their Elmer Bernstein CD.

The UC Bearcat mascot "high-fived" every graduate as he/she started across the stage. He's one of the 2 finalists for

Wonderful pics, Ginny. Congrats to all of you.

Thank you, DR JMK!

I literally left town the night I knew I had completed my last college course. I was only 19, and just wanted to get the hell out of SLC. So I left for Portland that night with my then-girlfriend. I think my parents were a little upset that I didn't come back for graduation day--but because I had tested out of so much and basically went straight through for a year and half, I graduated in March and didn't feel like coming back for the big do in June. That said a couple of months later, my brother in law showed up on our door and said my Mom had called in an absolute dither because I had made Phi Beta Kappa and there was going to be a special ceremony at the state capitol for inductees. My parents paid for me to come back for that, and that was sort of my "graduation" ceremony.

This afternoon Sandra and I saw "Little House on the Prairie, the Musical" on the Broadway Across America Tour.
Did this ever or will it ever play on Broadway?

Was it Raskolnikov who was the "perpetual student"?

I LIKE THAT. ;)
This is not a whine, just a small, small sigh...i wonder when i shall be able to bake again.
it warmed up some today so i walked to the mailbox with keith and sherlock, it felt soooo good. i fear i'm rapidly getting out of shape, i really had to work on the uphill walk back.

I was very disappointed craig didn't do the walk from graduate school, i wanted to go to pittsburg again.

Tonight, I'm off to usher for Stardust Homecoming (http://www.harlequinproductions.org/seasonpages/10/stardusthome.html). It should be good. :)
-
Not that that many people ordered it here, which was a little shocking in itself, but I'm a bit surprised no one who DID order it has gotten their Elmer Bernstein CD.
Mine arrived in today's mail.
It's on a vast pile of CDs...all of which need my attention but which must wait as I continue to do the things I must do in preparation for my trek eastward Monday evening.
-
I'll say Page 5 1/2 going on Page 6 just to give us something to "grow" on.
-
So very sleepy all of a sudden....I blame the weather...and Jose.
-
There is phenomenal tiredness in our house tonight. Richard and I have to drive to Lima and back tomorrow and Mary Linda has to drive home to Michigan. Something tells me no one is staying up late!
-
Thanks for sharing the glorious photos, DR GINNY! What fun! And congrats to ROB!
-
DR LAURA, I think Little House on the Prairie is on a long long long pre-Broadway tour - which may or may not end up in NYC.
-
Thanks, DR JRand - it WAS fun!
-
MR BK - my STRANGER/TAMIKO cd arrived today. And it is glorious! Elmer Bernstein - nothing more to say. I enjoyed the notes and the photos....AND the design of the booklet AND the design of the CD proper is most clever and interesting!!!
And the music. I love STRANGER for the reasons you write about.....but I LOVE LOVE LOVE the score for A GIRL NAMED TAMIKO. I have NOT seen the movie in decades....and only once on late night local television - Channel 6 - The Best of Hollywood - but the performances are unforgettable, and the music has brought back all of the images....half forgotten....they are now half remembered.
THANKS TO MR BK and to KRITZERLAND RECORDS for the RELEASE OF THE YEAR!!
How MANY people did Paramount have to thank - they sort of displayed the Greer Garson syndrome in their portion of the booklet, methinks.
-
Loved hearing DR JULIE's comments about the Opera....TALES OF HOFFMAN is also a favorite of mine.
-
Thanks, DR JRand - it WAS fun!
FUN is what we're all looking for!
-
My Blu Ray of PUBLIC ENEMIES arrived today, so I shall spend some time with Mr John Dillinger, from my Home Town.
-
DR Ginny - thanks for sharing your special day with us. Hope you can get some much-needed rest tonight.
-
Tommorow is a long day for me with double services in the morning, an afternoon rehearsal and another service, and then the choir Christmas party in the evening.
-
Thanks, DR DAW - I'm about to start on that rest right now...
-
The chicken is now out of the oven and cooling.

On the way to our celebration dinner at Montgomery Inn we passed a church with a sign advertising their "drive-through living Nativity." That just seems wrong to me.
-
Good evening.
-
On the way to our celebration dinner at Montgomery Inn we passed a church with a sign advertising their "drive-through living Nativity." That just seems wrong to me.
as wrong as that seems i curious how it works. do you drive down the driveway and look into a widow to see the living nativity & what the heck is a "living" nativity...people performing?
-
Great photos, Ginny!
-
Thanks, DR Julie!
-
Wrong, but - oh, so kitschy!!!! :D (I want pictures!)
-
DR Jane - a living Nativity is kind of a tableau with real people. I've seen it done very effectively and I've seen some really cheesy ones. We didn't fully explore the drive-through, but I think it's probably set up on the church grounds and you drive by various scenes. Could be pretty uncomfortable for the actors if it's cold and snowy.
-
I was part of a "living" nativity when I was a youngster in the Congregational church in Palos Verdes. We presented eight or so "tableau" - including camels! - which the attendees strolled past. With the weather in Los Angeles, you can do that kind of thing.
(I was a little beggar boy with a dirty face dressed in a burlap sack.)
-
Wrong, but - oh, so kitschy!!!! :D (I want pictures!)
Sorry, DR DAW, I don't think we'll make a special trip back to Cincinnati to see it and I know for sure that Richard won't be proposing such a thing to his Anglican congregation during tomorrow's trustees' meeting!
-
'night!

This afternoon Sandra and I saw "Little House on the Prairie, the Musical" on the Broadway Across America Tour.
Did this ever or will it ever play on Broadway?
It's never played on Broadway, and there are no announced plans for it to do so as of right now. It did play at the nearby major regional theater The Paper Mill Playhouse in Milburn, New Jersey earlier this year.
Did you enjoy it?
-
This afternoon Sandra and I saw "Little House on the Prairie, the Musical" on the Broadway Across America Tour.
Did this ever or will it ever play on Broadway?
No it has not played on Broadway. It started life out of town at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis. It received mixed reviews. They spent some time re-working it and then it played at the
Papermill Playhouse (http://www.papermill.org/stage/shows.php?ID=93)
earlier this year. It's now on an extended tour around the country. It may play very near New York but I doubt it will come to Broadway. The reviews after the re-working were not strong enough to easily raise the money needed for a Broadway run. It's doing OK business on the road and they probably don't feel the need to come to Broadway. It may happen in the future but if it's selling on the road why bring it to someplace where it may get picked apart.

I was very disappointed craig didn't do the walk from graduate school, i wanted to go to pittsburg again.
I did do the graduate school walk, but I didn't get quite the same thrill from it that I did from undergraduate school. I guess because I took a great many of my masters degree courses off campus AND I never lived on campus at all, so the school didn't have the same meaning for me that undergraduate school did.
-
I spent three hours of my evening with THE WATCHMEN. There were quite a few gaping plot holes in the story, but I still managed to enjoy it all right. Not a great superhero movie, but there were some interesting characters among the "heroes." In a way, it was kind of a darker version of THE INCREDIBLES.
-
I was going to see what material was on-line for its BD-Live presentation, but after five minutes of loading and nothing had come up, I just took the disc out of the player.
-
Then I watched about 50 minutes of AND THEN THERE WERE NONE. I always enjoy revisiting this sensational mystery, one of the greats by Agatha Christie.
-
Page Seven Dance!!!
-
I left LAW & ORDER on the DVR so I'd have something to watch while I eat lunch tomorrow.
I'll likely watch HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE on Blu-ray at some point tomorrow. I think I'm going to take another day off. Then, I'll work on Disney's EXTRACT on Monday.
-
(I was a little beggar boy with a dirty face dressed in a burlap sack.)
Some things never change. :)

Thanks, Dr. DAW for posting the wings photo.
As to the question about pets: I have a 15-year-old cockatoo named J.B. who sits on my shoulder most of the time when I write.
Just finishing up "Kansas City," a mad crazy Robert Altman film that I don't think I'd seen since it was initially in the theater. Great jazz music, scary performances and that Altman magic.

Well, I am back from seeing Kevin Spirtas' play LOADED, and, yes, he was naked, and alas, I sat in the front row. At one point when he threw his shoes across the stage, one of them almost ended up in my lap, but it did stay on stage, thank you, Jesus.
The play reminded me a lot of FRANKIE AND JOHNNY IN THE CLAIR DE LUNE (not the movie but the play) and that awful Lanford Wilson play BURN THIS, in which two characters get together, and I believe their relationship exists only in the mind of the playwright because I see no reason why two essential strangers would torture each other with their fucked up lives and that one of them at some point would get sick of the other psycho in the room and get the hell out. It reminded me a bit of Robert Patrick's very funny play T-SHIRTS about the generational gap in gay relationships, and I kept wishing it were T-SHIRTS.
That said, I thought both gentlemen, a young student in his early 20s and a man whose 47 yet claims to be 39 in online sex sites, were well protrayed and excellently acted. Both roles guaranteed the stars each a nude moment, a big emotional scene, and a crying jag, and both Mr Spirtas and Scott Kerns, who's pushing 29 and looks 19, were excellent.
I saw Kevin briefly after the show and met the very talented Mr Scott Kerns who deserves a huge career. You can check him out at scottkerns.com, DR TCB.

I don't know where the day has gone to.
Lunch at STAR OF INDIA was delicious...and they indeed did have Chicken Saag today! So I had two helpings. Both Billa and Bains both informed me that next Saturday they were having "free" dinner buffett. Well, you know me and free food...I will be there!

I believe that was rear nudity only, DR MBarnum. This play "in your face" nudity. You would have loved it.

Back from a charming and wonderfully wonderful meal with Mr. Nick Redman and Julie Kirgo. Genghis Cohen was as marvelous as ever. They gave me the big Johnny Mercer book for my birthday - very cool and I'm glad I hadn't bought it yet. Conversation was grand.
-
Jrand, glad you love the CD. And for many reasons, it's the release of the year for me, too, and not just because it's Kritzerland. I was frankly baffled why more people here didn't go for this - can't just be because it's film music, as if that was a dirty word. It's glorious music - gorgeous, tuneful, touching music by a composer that does have Broadway connections. Well, those who did get it can revel in its beauty.
-
Just got the Mercer book, too, but it's under the tree for now. Can't wait to crack into it, especially the section on "The Good Companions," still a favorite score. Priestley's novel is also a favorite and the source of my cockatoo's name. Dr. Elmore: J.B. doesn't talk. He does an unfortunate impersonation of my snoring though.
-
HAPPY HANUKKAH TO THOSE WHO CELEBRATE
-
In honor of our topic of the day, we had orange chicken (extra crispy and still the best anywhere) and Kung Pao chicken (also brilliant). We also had some crackerjack shrimp and some green beans. No sole tonight.
-
Welcome seven GUESTS.
-
And thanks to all those responsible for getting us off page five.
-
Perhaps I'll go sit on the couch like so much fish and see if I can find anything to watch.
-
I have been runningand doing nonstop since since 7 AM and somehow I feel am no closer to being ready for Christmas than I was last August

It seems I missed a lot in the past few days
Happy Belated Birthday to Dear Ginny and darling Mike Barnum
Congratulatins to Ginny's DS on his graduation - thank you for sharing those pictures
A year ago you were just about to "graduate" yourself- and begin your retirement - has the year gone as you thought it would? It seems as if you were busy every day.
-
VIBES for TCB - I hope you are greatly happy with whatever you decide to do
-
HEALTH VIBES for JRand and JMK....maybe you guys have the rare Francis Flu?
-
and now the Vixter has asked me to share her day with you all
-
thanks DAW, Jane, Jose, Ginny, George, and Jennifer

She made these for her Church Youth Group Caroling Party that was held this evening
-
She did every bit of it herself with no help from Mom - she sends her sincere thanks to all of you for your great recipes and clear directions - her cookies were the hit of the party (there wer no leftovers to bring back to Mom and Dad!!) and every one was very impressed that she baked from scratch and decorated them all herself
-
fortunately for me - I suggested that she keep a few back from the platters - so I have just enjoyed a lovely peanut butter kiss cookie
-
We also have lots more ingredients and she has the baking bug now, so I look foward to having our cupboards fullo'cookies for the near future
-
Rapid Healing Vibes for our dear Jane

and welcome to outr newest dear reader!!
Those Chicken Wings sound wonderful!

Hey, DR vicmom! Tell the vixter howdy for me!
-
The gin has kicked in. Time for bed.
-
I finally got my car back - $760 odd later.....
the insurance adjuster wanted to see the last five years of maintenance records before he would OK the claim - I was goingt o fight it but the inconvenience of having no car while I argued it would have cost me more in aggravation then what I would have saved in coverage as they only cover mechanical breakdown, not regualr service items so the new battery, the radiator flush and fill and the leaky hose would not have been covered in any case - then there is a $250 deductable on what they do cover - so in the end it would have been about $200 savings - if I won my appeal wjoc was doubtful since I didn;t keep teh receipts for all the past years maintence - I had been ever been asked for them before -
Vixdad thinks they are sick of paying for the car after 220,000 miles, 2 transmissions, a radiator, a water pump, an AC unit, a head gasket... and are just going to deny the claims going forward...
-
Hello Larry!!! Thanks for sharing your theatre thoughts with us!
-
and thank you to Julie for theMet report - and to Jose for the insider info!
-
I wonder what Laura and Sandra thought of Little House
-
Cilla, have you checked if you can get DSL in your building?
I have the internet covered. I'm not going to change compaines for that, it's DSL.
I'll check on monday for the prices. Dish has great prices for a year, but the second year they go up. But the channel line up is better.
-
Congrats to DS Rob, glad your family had a good day Ginny.
-
I had a Christmas card from the woman who was my secretary when I was in private practice at the lakes. she was with me for about 6 years. Anyway, I had no idea both her dog and the man she lived with for the past 15 years died this summer (not at the same time). I called her and we talked for well over and hour. We had a great talk.
when I told her about the new office she was shocked I went this long without cable TV. It was the first thing I put in my office up there.
-
I would say "Little House" was okay. I loved the series as a child and was glad that it was not too inaccurate.
-
...and I've seen some really cheesy ones.
Ah. So you saw our living nativity that year then.
-
Good Evening!
$1 Coffee at the ING Direct Café.
Cuban food at Tina's.
Tumi at the Time-Warner Center.
Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream - Chocolate-Cherry-Hazelnut! - at Lulu & Mooky's.
Amazing Sichuan food at Little Pepper.

Catching the D Train - the express - back home.
It was a good day.
:)
-
DR Ginny - Congrats to your DS Rob! And thanks for posting the links to the pics.
-
DR vixmom - Thanks for sharing DR the vixter's day with us! The cookies look great. *I'm actually starting to whittle down my cookbook collection, so... ;)
-
DR elmore - Thanks for the theatre reportage. -And at least it was only a shoe that almost landed in your lap. ::)

;D ;D

Yeah, that is an interesting decision by the Tony committee regarding After Miss Julie, although I understand their reasoning. I think. -I guess they're making up for the nomination back in the mid-90's for Indiscretions which was based on Cocteau's Les Parents Terribles. ???
-
DR Laura - I believe the only way that Little House on the Prairie would ever come into NYC would be if they got a new director. Just sayin'.
<meow>
-
Laters? When is Laters?
;D
-
Probably the reason it is doing well on tour is because it is being sold as part of season ticket packages.
-
Iwas overcast most of the day today...
Little Black Rain Cloud (http://lair2000.net/Pooh_Lyrics/Songs/Little_Black_Rain_Cloud.html)
I'm just a little black rain cloud,
Hovering under the honey tree.
I'm only a little black rain cloud,
Pay no attention to little me.
Oh, everyone knows that a rain cloud,
Never eats honey, no, not a nip.
I'm just floating around, over the ground,
Wondering where I will drip.
-
Tonight I watched a 1961 Punjabi movie. That is all.
-
OK.. Me sleepy.
Goodnight.

It's lack of familiarity coupled with the onslaught of CD releases over the past few weeks that have left some of us near-paupers.
But because it's Bernstein, there STILL needed to be "some" respect.

Topic of the Day: I don't know any chicken recipes...and most of the chicken "dishes" that I like are fast-food-based. ::)

DR George - I am amazed that:
1] Your picture of your television came out so clearly, and
[2] That you so quickly identified the source!
Congratulations! :D
1] Who knew?? ;D Evidently, you can take pictures of Hi-def TVs much betterly than CRT TVs, and
[2] Closer Than Ever is one of my absolute favorite musical reviews...WSMA, you know. ;)
musical revue
(review is when you critique something)
Although Putting It Together was subtitled A Musical Review (On purpose)
AARRGGHH!! I know something didn't look right. :P

DR Elmore, Kevin Spritas was naked in that movie of his that I watched. I think he likes being naked.
I believe that was rear nudity only, DR MBarnum. This play "in your face" nudity. You would have loved it.
He's not the only one. ;)

Those were some great looking cookies! Congrats to the Vixter!

I am now watching Wednesday's "Glee." I was planning on watching last night's "Ugly Betty" first...and it looked like my DVR did record the correct channel and time...but "Ugly Betty" was not on! Some movie with Adam Sandler was on. At least, I can watch it on-line.
