Well, you've read the notes, the notes were winding down, and now it is time for you to post until the winding down cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: POTHER!
-
And now, as promised - CD one - which I hope will tickle more than a few dear readers. It's a BIG release! You know the drill - if you want it, it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping paid directly to kritzerland at adelphia.net - be sure to put the CD title (or titles) in the invoice. If you're ordering both this and our other CD, there is only one shipping charge. The other release, which will follow immediately, is a budget-priced CD - my way of saying thank you to everyone who's ordered Kritzerland CDs this year. So, here is the BIG release:
“THE ANTS IS COMING”
Kritzerland is proud to present a limited edition soundtrack – a world premiere release:
EMPIRE OF THE ANTS Music Composed and Conducted by Dana Kaproff
Empire Of The Ants is the first time a score to a film by Bert I. Gordon (affectionately known as Mr. BIG) has come to CD, and this is its world premiere release – in other words, this is a BIG event. Mr. BIG has made some of the most beloved genre films of all time, most of them featuring BIG creatures of one kind or another – Earth vs. The Spider, Beginning Of The End, The Amazing Colossal Man, War Of The Colossal Beast, Attack Of The Puppet People, and on and on. His early films were made at a time when movie going was fun – weekly double bills, shlock and classics playing side by side – a giddy time for audiences and filmmakers alike.
After some lean years in the early 1970s, during which movie tastes had changed, in 1976 Mr. BIG hit it BIG with Food Of The Gods, a movie filled with a plethora of giant critters. The film did well enough at the box-office that the following year Mr. BIG was back with Empire Of The Ants, a deliriously wacky film about giant ants run amok – seeing those two films was like taking a trip back in time to another era.
For the score, Mr. BIG hired a young composer who was just starting out, Dana Kaproff. Kaproff, who was 24, had begun working in TV, and Empire Of The Ants would be his first feature film score. Kaproff’s orchestral score is quite effective, using repeated hammering notes on the piano, along with mysterioso string writing, excellent giant mutant ant music, and, as with the film, there’s a sense of real spirit and fun to the score. Kaproff would go on to be a prolific composer for television and film, and some of his terrific work includes scores for hit TV shows such as Cagney and Lacey (many episodes), Falcon Crest, The Bionic Woman, Matlock, along with a whole slew of TV movies, plus such films as Sam Fuller’s The Big Red One, the classic chiller, When A Stranger Calls, The Golden Seal, and many others.
The CD is mastered from the original two-track stereo session masters and includes every note of music written for the film.
This release is limited to 1000 copies only. The price is $19.98 plus shipping. The first one hundred copies purchased from Kritzerland will be signed by Dana Kaproff.
CD will ship by the third week of January – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).

And here is the second CD - this one is 12.98 plus 3.75 shipping, but if you're ordering both CDs, there is only ONE 3.75 charge.
“THE PROGRESS OF MAN IS THE PROGRESS OF STEEL”
Kritzerland is proud to present a limited edition soundtrack – the first time on CD release:
RHAPSODY OF STEEL Music Composed and Conducted by Dimitri Tiomkin
Rhapsody Of Steel was a short animated industrial film commissioned by United States Steel. Normally, industrial films were not widely seen, but the twenty-two minute Rhapsody Of Steel, a sort of child’s history of steel from the first meteor hitting earth to modern times (circa 1959) and the first manned space rocket turned out so well that it was shown as an added attraction at thousands of US movie theaters in 1959. The creative team included John Sutherland (who’d been an assistant director at Disney and who’d voiced the adult Bambi), Eyvind Earle (who, the same year, had leant his distinct artistry to Disney’s Sleeping Beauty), and Maurice Noble (Duck Dodgers). The wonderful actor Gary Merrill was brought on board to speak the narration.
For the score, Sutherland managed the incredible coup of landing Dimitri Tiomkin – Tiomkin had already won Oscars for High Noon and The High and the Mighty, and would, the same year as Rhapsody Of Steel, win yet another for The Old Man and the Sea, not to mention composing scores for some of Hollywood’s all-time classic films, including Lost Horizon, Duel In The Sun, Red River, High Noon, Strangers On A Train, I Confess, It’s A Wonderful Life, Portrait of Jennie, The Thing from Another World, The High and the Mighty, Dial ‘M’ For Murder, Giant, Friendly Persuasion, Gunfight At The O.K. Corral, Rio Bravo, The Unforgiven, The Alamo, The Sundowners, The Guns Of Navarone, and many others. His music for Rhapsody Of Steel is propulsive and energetic, capturing the essence of the progress of steel through the ages. It’s exciting, dramatic, and compelling music and doesn’t let up for the full running time of the film. Playing the score was the marvelous Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, which was only appropriate since United States Steel was headquartered in Pittsburgh. Tiomkin conducted and the result is a virtuoso performance by the orchestra and a thrilling listening experience in fabulous monophonic sound. Originally released as a promotional LP for friends and family of United States Steel, the LP was a highly prized and sought after collectible, and we’re very happy to finally bring it to CD. The score is presented two ways – the score only, and the score with Gary Merrill’s narration.
Rhapsody Of Steel is being offered as a budget-priced CD, as our way of saying thank you to all our wonderful customers.
This release is limited to 1000 copies only. The price is $12.98 plus shipping. If ordered with any other single title, shipping is, of course, free.
CD will ship by the third week of January – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).

Welcome seven GUESTS.
-
AARRGGHH!! BK, I just ordered the two CDs, but I clicked too fast and didn't put any title in the e-mail header...or any message, either! :o
Now what? :-[
-
Who will be first to order Mr. BIG? And get a signed copy by Dana Kaproff. And the packaging for Ants is a whole lot o' fun.
-
I'll note what they're for.
-
George is the first to have giant ants in his pants. I think everyone will be most amused by my track titles - I had so much fun doing them.
-
I'll note what they're for.
Thanks. :)

This evening, I'm working concessions at the Kenneth J. Minneart Center for the Arts at South Puget Sound Community College (non-college booking and house management are now handled by the Washington Center for the Performing Arts). They have two performance spaces and they actually have two performances each (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/calendar/default.asp?cal_mo_numeric=12) of two different shows today (I'm working the evening shows). There is also another show at the WCPA, but I won't be there. I will have to deal with two different intermissions, and hopefully there will be at least one other person to help me. The concessions counter at SPSCC is pretty small, so there's not much room, but a second person would be most helpful when even one theater is crowded.
:)
-
DR Jane - Keep the faith!!!!! You will get there. Glad the motion range continues to expand, and the pain meds are longer between each dose. I know it is hard to be patient, but you're doing great! :)
-
DR Cillaliz - very excited about your office move. Thanks for keeping us all updated.

We were supposed to be celebrating Christmas early at my Mom's today - the only day the whole family can get together - but we may have to adjust our plans with the coming storm.

Good morning.

Good morning, al! I am up early because I have two shopping bags of parcels to ship at the post office and I want to finish as quickly as possible. Around 8:30, i will hail a cab and take everything to the station at 68th and Columbus where there are three automated postage machines; my post office only has one and the place is a zoo. They've told me for several years now that they are getting another but it's bullshit. My station has also removed all the postage machines so it's a complete waste for anything except wasting your time in a line.
After that, I believe I shall have a bit of breakfast and proceed with the remainder of my day, most of which will be at the NYPL.
I was on the home phone with Tommy Krasker last night around 9:30 when our DR edisaurus called me on my cell during intermission to tell me she was loving FINIAN'S RAINBOW. I'm sorry I missed her. I look forward to her reaction to the whole shebang. We just made Charles Isherwood's 10 best list in the NY TIMES.
-
New releases ordered.
-
Well - now it is starting to snow, so I think my brother in law will be driving us to work this morning. I hope.

DR GEORGE - Sea Hunt was the Baywatch of the 1950's.
-
DR MATTH there was an "arrival scan" on my Basterds on December 17 - but the location is a secret. Maybe it got to Mooresville yesterday and will arrive at my house today. Time will tell.

And the word of the day is: POTHER!
And The Song Of The Day Is: WHEN I'M NOT NEAR THE GIRL I LOVE
-
Our early Christmas gathering this afternoon has been postponed indefinitely. We wouldn't enjoy ourselves, worrying about the storm and the roads and getting home safely.
-
I'm already planning on taking Metro North to my church job tomorrow morning.
-
I don't watch TV, except on DVD because my schedule is too erratic and I don't have cable, so I can't contribute much to today's discussion. But I did catch the third season of "Dexter" and started watching "Foyle's War," which is now a new addiction. Michael Kitchen is perfect in the title role, and Honeysuckle Weeks (love the name) is a great sidekick.
All you people getting packages mailed and stuff: Anyone got time to write all my cards for me? I haven't even started my baking yet. Oops, it time for that right now. Will write more later.
-
Wowie! I got to the post office by taxi around 8:40, went right to a postage machine and finished by 9 am, I then walked to my pharmacy, pcked up a few prescriptions and I am home until I leave for the NYPL around 11. I may stop by the FINIAN'S RAINBOW matinee today as well before I head back home.
-
Good morning!
All the predictions for snow and rain were completely wrong for this morning. It's cold, but clear as can be and beautiful. Not a cloud in the sky, and my walk this morning was most invigorating.
-

Stay warm!!
-
DAW I am sorry about your postponed Christmas
-
on theother jand it would be most conveinet to me if I could postpone it about a month or so
-
I have a Christmas party to attend tonight, so while I expect to be home reasonably early (by 8:30, I'm hoping) and get some viewing done, looks like most of my day off will have to be enjoyed this afternoon.
-
Good morning!
-
No snow here yet, but they say we should be getting about a foot once it starts.
-
Looks like another Warner Archive disc this afternoon, and it'll likely be the early Judy Garland film EVERYBODY SING.
-
I have a busy dy of theater today -- The Starry Messenger this afternoon, followed by Evergreen this evening. Evergreen is the new holiday musical written by Peter Mills and Cara Reichel for Prospect Theater Company.
-
But first, meeting some friends for brunch.
-
Congrats on the two new releases, bk!
-
I don't watch a lot of TV series, because I'm frequently not home in the evenings, and it gets hard to catch up and the DVR just gets used up. But I have enjoyed The Good Wife this season, as well as some episodes of Glee. I started watching Lost just last season, and I'm looking forward to that starting up again soon. I tried watching a few episodes of Flash Forward this year, but that doesn't really do it for me. Oh, and I've watched some Mad Men, too, which I really like.
The show I haven't seen at all that I think I want to check out is Dexter. I suppose the best way is to get the season 1 DVD and start from there.
-
I never posted my 10 best theatrical productions of the past year because I'm sure I even saw 10 that I liked! I know I liked very much the following:
FINIAN'S RAINBOW at City Center Encores! who knew that six months later I would be involved?
LOADED: I wasn't wild about the play but I sure liked the direction and the two actors
TIME AFTER TIME: a wonderful musical by Steve Cole and Jeff Saver that deserves a long life
-
We got the snow.
-
Today is my mother's 77th birthday. There will be cake.
-
I will need to shovel both driveways.
-
Happy Birthday to td's mom!
-
Happy Birthday, Mrs. D!
-
Today the children will have their Christmas party at church and the parts assigned for the Nativity for church tomorrow.
-
Saturday morning greetings! It's snowing here in SW Ohio, but not like on the east coast. It appears to be sticking to the grassy areas and trees, but not piling up on roadways too much. And that's a good thing.
-
So far this morning I've prepared a Christmas package for Rob to take to Mary Linda's family in Michigan and one for my niece to take to her parents' house (also in Michigan, by way of Illinois). I've also finished cleaning up the freezer - it's all connected and humming along nicely in our kitchen.
-
Good morning all.
The snow hasn't started but they are talking about it. The talk began last night. Since it's snowing in Virginia perhaps we may really get snow. We have a party tonight and it's supposed to begin during the worst time of the storm. We may not be attending the party after all.
We have DVDs to watch if we don't go out and I will go to the grocery store soon to pick over what is left from the crazies who will treat the storm like the beginning of Armageddon.
-
Good morning! Well, the snow is here! I think about 8 inches so far, but we're expecting up to a foot or more of additional snow and now we have a blizzard warning. Being from Buffalo, you'd think I'd be more blase, but we haven't had a big storm for several years in the DC area!
-
When I look out the windows, I see a deep blanket of white.
-
A very very happy birthday to the DM of DR td!!!!!! :D

...I will go to the grocery store soon to pick over what is left from the crazies who will treat the storm like the beginning of Armageddon.
LOL! I thought that only happened here in SW Ohio!
-
I did finish wrapping of most of the gifts yesterday and this morning. I have one that contains perishible items which can't be attended to until the afternoon of the party where I'll be presenting the gift. Otherwise, I'm all done with wrapping this year. Hooray!
-

LOL! I thought that only happened here in SW Ohio!
It happens everywhere! We got a few grains of sleet yesterday, and the grocery store was jammed.
-
Well, I have to say I'm surprised. An hour ago, there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Now, the sky is nothing but clouds! Wow!
-
Now, I'm going to deal with some computer stuff and then head back down to start on some viewing. I have that MENTALIST episode to finish that I started last night, and I'll likely watch another one while I eat lunch before starting on EVERYBODY SING later.
WBBL.
-
I agree about "Hatari" being an ideal candidate for a Blu ray restoration, including the score by Mancini.
The film's singular liability -- IMO -- is the obnoxious "Pockets" played by Red Buttons, who was the ideal actor for obnoxious roles (if his credits are any clue). Or was this a case of the obnoxious Red Buttons playing "Pockets" who "might have been" an endearing character?
-
TOD:
LOST
COUGAR TOWN
THE AMAZIN' RACE
And really, that's all I can come up with. I watched PROJECT RUNWAY all the way thru to the bitter end, but it was a blah season. I kept up with FLASHFORWARD, but mostly because I was intrigued with it's basic mystery--I dont think it's well written or acted. And while I very much liked the pilot of GLEE, I haven't liked any of it that I've seen since and gave up on it back in October. I still think that 90% of TV is crap.

In addition to The Graveyard Book, if you are in a mood for books for young adults, I also recommend either the Artemis Fowl series or The Mysterious Benedict Society series.

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I'm just waiting for the snow to fall. And it better!!!!!!
-
I'm off to the NYPL!
-
As for DR edisaurus...
I was able to meet up with her last night after she attended and LOVED Finian's Rainbow. -My timing worked out well enough that I was also able to catch Kate Baldwin on her way out of the stage door and was able to exchange a nice hug and kiss. *She'll also be back at Feinstein's in April. In any case...
With my friend, Bradley, in tow, the three of us headed up to Casellula to grab a bite to eat and a glass of wine. Well, that was the plan. They were slammed last night. Thankfully, we were able to head across 9th Avenue to Eatery where we able to grab the nice quiet corner table in the bar area. The food was good - they had just revamped the menu. The house merlot was drinkable. And, most importantly, the conversation was sparkling. -And I don't believe too many people's ears should have been burning last night. We had a great catch-up session.
DR edisaurus will be flying back up to NYC on New Year's Eve. However...
-
It looks like DR edisaurus will be staying in NYC for one more night. I spoke to her this morning, and by that time, she had found out that her flight back to Atlanta tonight had already been cancelled. -In fact, Jet Blue has already gone ahead and cancelled almost all the flights out of JFK after 2:00 this afternoon, and most of the other airlines have started to follow suit.
Alas, her hotel was already fully-booked this weekend, so she had to check out. However, she'll be able to crash at Peter's place tonight, if needed, and I also have a sofa-bed here she's welcome to use. So...
*DR elmore - Peter's place isn't too far from your place, so, depending on when Amy flies out tomorrow... Brunch? Popover? Good Enough To Eat? ;)
-
DR Jane - Progress is progress. :)
-
DR DAW - I'm sorry that you had to postpone your gathering, but at least you got the cookies made. ;)
-
I'm up, and can't tell what sort of day it is out there.
-
Oh dear!! Hope DR Edisaurus finds what she needs during the duration of her visit. You are very kind to offer help, DR JoseSPiano. Glad she liked the show! :)
-
The Children's Hour has landed, and it looks fantastic!! :D
-
RLP - I agree about Red Buttons in Hatari - makes my teeth hurt. The real surprise is how delightful Elsa Martinelli is - she should have had a longer career - I remember her from a few other films, but now I'll have to find out what happened to her.
-
Thanks, DRs JoseSPiano and vixmom!!
-
DAW, glad it got there - don't know why this one's taking so long - not one person on the film music board has acknowledged getting it and that includes the many Californians.
-
And now I await the arrival of she of the Evil Eye.

Oh dear!! Hope DR Edisaurus finds what she needs during the duration of her visit. You are very kind to offer help, DR JoseSPiano. Glad she liked the show! :)
If anything, she'll have a couple more hours to finish her editing work here with Peter. So that's a good thing. Now it's just a matter of getting re-booked for tomorrow - and getting to the airport tomorrow.
*She was also able to pick up some croissants from Petrossian, and it looks like she'll be able to get a bagel with whitefish salad today too. ;)
-
And after making some other phone calls this morning...
Up to 18" of snow in Charlottesville. So far.
Up to 14" of snow in Richmond. So far.
Up to 12" of snow in the DC area. So far.
-
I ended up seeing "A Single Man" last night at The Paris Theatre (http://www.theparistheatre.com/) last night...
Non-movie observations: I was sort of surprised that the movie theatre was not filled last night. There was a good crowd in attendance, but I was expecting it to be close to sold out. However, the lack of crowd did allow me to have a nice seat in the mezzanine with an empty seat on either of me. Alas, I believe The Paris Theatre has to have the noisiest popcorn bags in New York City. The crinkling was quite distracting at times.
I also got a chuckle out of how many gay men were in the theatre last night... with iPhones. -Myself included. ;)
Anyhoo...
-
Wow, lots of snow for you easterners! Now such weather for us on the west coast...in fact it is in the 50s and damp here.
-
TOD:
CASTLE
THE AMAZING RACE
BIG BROTHER
SOUTHLAND (now cancelled)
RULES OF ENGAGEMENT (now cancelled, I think)
LIFE ON MARS (now cancelled)
MODERN FAMILY
Those were the only shows I watched in 2009, so I don't have ten total. But I sure liked all of 'em.
-
Getting ready to jog.
-
Then I'll go over to Jerry's and have some bacon and eggs.
-
Yesterday I received two LP records of crooner Tony "The Teenaged Tornado" Travis. What a swell singer he is.
Some (particulary JRand) may be familiar with Tony as he starred in films like JAMBOREE and THE BEATNICKS and showed up on lots of TV like Perry Mason and M Squad. He was a wonderful actor and singer. I think I need to interview the guy.
-
As for "A Single Man"...
I really liked it. It really does seem like the pairing of first time director/writer/producer, Tom Ford, with Christopher Isherwood's original story was fated. There's a great "style" to the movie, but it's subtly executed. Colin Firth has really earned the praise and nominations he's earned so far - and his wardrobe - designed by Tom Ford suits (pun intended) him well.
Plot-wise, it's sort of hard to talk about. It's more of a "personal journey" movie. However, I will say that the opening 10 minutes are haunting, beautiful and heart-wrenching.
-
What DR Jose said! Yes, I'm back at it and no time to read all the posts but just wanted to say that FINIAN'S RAINBOW was amazing and wonderful and i loved every minute of it!
And it was so kind of Jose and Bradley to meet me after. I have had zero opportunities for fun on this trip so that more than made up for it!
I have never had a flight cancel so I don't know how it works to get another. I tried calling Delta, but of course, all lines were busy.
I do like the idea of brunch tomorrow if it works out! More later...
-
Good mornin', my dear dears!!!
Many thanks for all the happy birthday wishes from the Hainsies yesterday - I have had a roller-coaster 3-day birthday, filled with much travelin' and several refuelings - and MY car gets 50 mpg...
Anyhoo, thank you thank you to BK, my twin Dan the Man, MBarnum, JMK, Kevin H, Jeninifer, TCB, Arnold MBrockman, Julie, George, Michael S!!, Laura, DAW, Vixmom, JRand, Ginny-Gins, Sandra, RonP, ELMO!!, Kerry, Ben, MattH, Druxy, Jose, Cillaliz, and my ol' pals Jane/Keith/Sherlock for remembering me on my 61st anniversary of life on this here planet!
I had three - count'em - 3 dinners on the 3 days of birthday; got paid, finally, from the rehab clinic (HUGE check, cuz they owed me for 3 months) - I drove to Malibu and sat in the office until someone wrote a check! - , visited my arents' and grandparents' graves at the cemetary way out in the wilds of Simi Valley yesterday - my dad's b'day and mine are the same day - visited my developmentally disabled cousin Tina (morey Orloff's only daughter) in Tarzana, shlepped to Agoura for many days to help my sister Rikki cut, weigh, package and box her largest-ever year of candy orders, wrote the reviews I've been putting off becuzz I was too busy, did two count'em 2 auditions (didn't get the gig - probably a good thing...), picked up 3 piano students, picked up a taping of a new game show!!, got good news about one of my stories (more to come on that one), and and and... tonight I'm going to LA Ballet's Nutcracker at UCLA Royce Hall - I get great tickets, becuzz I write reviews that celebrate this company's continuing progress and their still Being Here into a 4th season...
And thass all the nooz, right now, from Marina del Rey!
-
Forgot to mention the two shows last week at our theater - where i performed a rude version of O Holy Night, with unprintable lyrics... got my laughs, however!
-
Jane is my hero.
-
DR PennyO - whew!
-
OH!
And, yes, as evidenced by the copies in hand last night at The St. James Theatre, Finian's Rainbow now has a Souvenir Program.
-
I'd love to see Finian's Rainbow...
-
My niece is on her way here for some lunch and to pick me up for some shopping around town. She's really coming to give herself and Gram a break from packing and from each other. Sounds like it's gotten pretty intense out there.
-
I'm at a loss here - how do you access the past blogs???
-
DR edisaurus - Once again, it was great seeing you last night.
*I got an update from my airline pilot friend - If the change fee isn't too bad, you might have a better chance of getting out early tomorrow if you can rebook to fly out of Newark (EWR). Of course, then there's the little issue of getting out to EWR tomorrow morning. -Although, on the bright(?) side, "they" are saying that the NYC-area will be getting 9-14 inches of snow. However, it will move in fast, fall quickly, and move out fast, which will leave plenty of time to get the roads - and runways - clear by tomorrow morning.
-
I'm able to read the daily discussions, but not the lead-in blogs that inspire them...

Yikes - Winter...

DR Edi - I'm so glad you loved Finian's Rainbow (I thought you would)! Sorry you're weather-bound in NYC - or not...

Happy Birthday to the mother of DR td - and the sister of DR DtM - (Anniversary wishes included at no extra charge, you simply pay an additional shpg/handling fee).

I'm at a loss here - how do you access the past blogs???
Go to: http://www.haineshisway.com/
Then click on "Column Archives" under "Unseemly Linkage". -The entries are not dated, so you'll have to click and click. -Or just reference the Notes Titles from the message board listing.
-
DR GINNY and I are having the same snow.....lots in the air and on the ground (although the grass is still visible) - but not much staying on the roads. A bit sparse customer wise so far this morning - but hopes are high for this afternoon.
-
Wow DR PENNY O until I adjusted my glasses, I thought you performed a NUDE version of O Holy Night!
-
Callback vibes for THE VIXTER!
-
DR JRand - the precip here sounds more like rain outside my window. There's a little snow mixed in, but it's 'way above freezing.

Stay safe vibes to all east coast Hainsies/Kimlets!

Today is my mother's 77th birthday. There will be cake.
HAPPY 77TH BIRTHDAY TO DR TD'S MOTHER!!!!!!!

Is anybody venturing to see BYE BYE BIRDIE or is it just running its course to the end?
I am glad DR EDISAURUS opted for FINIAN'S RAINBOW even though she likes BBB's Mr Bill Irwin.

Before and After the movie last night, I checked out the "Alice in Wonderland" themed windows at Bergdorf-Goodman. They - for lack of a better word right now - ROCK!!!!!!!
Below is an iPhone pic. I'll try to post my regular camera pics this afternoon on Flickr. But in the meantime...
*Almost everything in this window is made out of paper.

Wow DR PENNY O until I adjusted my glasses, I thought you performed a NUDE version of O Holy Night!

I have returned from the NYPL since i am not going down to the theatre this afternoon. I am going tonight with my beloved goddaughter Charlotte to see the show. So I've got things to do here for the nonce.
Speaking of the NYPL, I'm getting good at finding things on the computer but having a bitch of a time finding info in the books the computer tells me lists things on my subjects. Oy!
-
It looks like DR edisaurus will be staying in NYC for one more night.
Brunch? Popover? Good Enough To Eat? ;)
Tomorrow's a crazy day for a couple of reasons, and I'm a bit bummed because today would have been perfect. I've got to go to Toyland and use the paper cutter as well as pick up a book, then I've got to run by the St James and drop off Christmas things before the Men's Chorus concert at Town Hall at 3 pm. :-[
-
DAW, glad it got there - don't know why this one's taking so long - not one person on the film music board has acknowledged getting it and that includes the many Californians.
BK, it might be the slow up in mail because of the holiday increase.

Cilla:
Great news Jane. Slow and steady in the rehab is good and very glad to hear you can go longer between pain pills
Thank you cilla and vixmom. Unfortunately, as I discovered the hard way last night, I must still double the wee morning (4 hours after the bedtime) dose.
thank you daw, jose & penny for your words of encouragement.

The earliest flight I could get on Delta was TUESDAY!
So, I bought another ticket on US Air that goes thru Charlotte on Monday, hoping to be between snowstorms.
Although The Wellington was still full, I was able to get a room for 2 nights at The Edison and can take the subway there, so the only bad thing will be destroying my suede shoes, and I guess I'll just take overnight bags from Peter's. So, there are worse things than spending an extra 2 days working in NY. There still won't be much time for recreation but maybe brunch at Popover???
-
I have extended the birthday wishes posted to my mum, she's very thankful to one and all for sharing.
-
My driveways are reasonably clean now. My snow shovel BROKE while shoveling!
-
no spare td?
-
Mum doesn't know it yet, but, there will be cake after dinner! As well as cousins kind enough to have bought said cake! So, it's almost a surprise party. . .
I have a slow-roasted hickory pork tenderloin in the oven, will be making cheddar mashed potatoes (the potatoes are getting ready to boil on the stove) as well as steamed mixed vegetables for our dinner plates.
Dinner at 4:45. . .c'mon over. . . ;)

Alas, no spare, DR Jane. Some of my cousins and I ended up sweeping and salting rather than shoveling.

It is rather nice here today so I get to go on a walk with the guys. I can’t go to the trails but I can walk here. We will go a mile ot two. Walking is easy and I need to stay in shape. the way walking makes my shoulder hurt is not easy, good though is walking doesn’t harm my shoulder as long as I wear the sling.

Oh, man! I am here at Panera with Ye Olde Laptop. I came home at noon to find a house without any power whatsoever. I called the DWP from my cell and was told that a transformer in my neighborhood blew affecting 600 people. Unbelievable! ETA? Midnight tonight, although they're "onsite" working on it. I made them switch me to a supervisor - when I got her on the phone I said midnight was sort of unacceptable and that even MORE unacceptable was that in the year 2009 the friggin' DWP has no BACKUP system for problems like this. She said they did but didn't explain why it wasn't being used. She simply explained they were working on it and it could be back up before midnight. I told her I'd just opened my latest DWP bill for $900, which is a third more than my bills were in June and that for $900 I expect a backup system to be used or power to be restored in a timely manner. They don't care - they're not affected. Most of the signals are working, but at least one is out. It's certainly not affecting Panera. I shudder to think what this might have done to the computer, wireless router and modem. And if it's not up by six and I have a problem with any of that stuff, I won't be able to call about it until tomorrow. Therefore, IF there's a problem it means I have to come back to Panera later to write the notes - IF I have any battery left by then.
-
TOD:
CASTLE
THE AMAZING RACE
BIG BROTHER
SOUTHLAND (now cancelled)
RULES OF ENGAGEMENT (now cancelled, I think)
LIFE ON MARS (now cancelled)
MODERN FAMILY
Those were the only shows I watched in 2009, so I don't have ten total. But I sure liked all of 'em.
RULES OF ENGAGEMENT is not canceled. It'll be back in the new year, and if it scores higher rathings that Elfman's ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE, it'll get a renewal for next year, too.
-
And I'm hoping my phone is charging by being plugged into the computer. That battery was halfway down despite the fact that I charged it overnight and haven't used it that much today.
-
And let me get this straight - dear reader PennyO has been coming to this site for what - six, seven YEARS and has never read the NOTES? Color me truly boggled.
-
So much for a nice day of rest and movie watching.
-
I am beyond furious.
-
I know there are several Saturday before Christmas parties in my nabe - poor them.
-
bk - 1) Did you unplug your computer components and TV before you left your house?
2) Did you not bring the power supply-A/C adapter for your laptop with you to Panera?
3) $900 - WHOA!?!?!?
I hope your power is restored sooner rather than later.
-
My friend who lives in Roanoke said they had 18" of snow.

Back from some errands with my niece, during which time I hope my mom took a nap. Laura and I went to Walgreen's, Kathryn's (the local Vera Bradley
pusher retailer), and to Bern's greenhouse for my annual quartet of miniature poinsettias. Kathryn's also sells a lot of used furniture on consignment and we found 3 possible baker's racks for my mom's home-to-be. Laura took photos with her phone to show to Gram.

I know power outages are irritating as hell, but you folks do have nice, warm weather today don't you? It's 35 here. I'm praying OUR power stays on.
-
And I'm hoping my phone is charging by being plugged into the computer. That battery was halfway down despite the fact that I charged it overnight and haven't used it that much today.
Well... It sounds like you're iPhone battery has reached it's "half-life" - which, unfortunately, comes quicker than one would like. However...
-Have you turned off "Location Services"?
-Do you have any "Push" notifications turned on?
-Have you dimmed your Brightness setting?
-Do you turn-off the Wi-Fi when you're not near a Wi-Fi signal? -The iPhone will continually look for a wireless hub otherwise, and drain your battery.
-And, yes, your phone should be charging via your laptop battery.
-
DR Elmore - I love, love, love the holiday greeting from The Fantasticks! Great memories!
-
Now probably wouldn't be a good time to remind BK that our household was without power for 5 (count 'em, 5) days in 2008 when Hurricane Ike roared through SW Ohio.
-
I finished that MENTALIST episode that had started. I remembered the killer (as I mentioned last night), but I had forgotten one piece of the puzzle with another killer, so rewatching the show reminded me of it.
-
What is our Vixter auditioning for???
-
I watched another MENTALIST episode while I ate lunch. This one guest starred Elisabeth Roem as a psychiatrist who had helped Jane get over his grief after his wife and child were butchered. She's still a stiff presence as an actress, and never the least bit sympathetic. I honestly didn't remember much about the episode, so it was a pleasure rewatching it.
-
What is our Vixter auditioning for???
The lead in ONCE UPON A MATTRESS.
-
I've read the notes on the days I've been here - but didn't know how to access notes I have not read...
-
Then I watched another Warner Archive offering: EVERYBODY SING. It's funny. Judy Garland had one of her first record hits with "Everybody Sing" but in this movie, neither she nor anyone else ever sings it. I think she sings in in another one of her early MGM movies.
-
Well, now you know.
-
I didn't know Panera had plugs, so if I have to come back, which I'm praying I don't, then I'll bring the power cord. So, if the iPhone battery needs to be replaced, do I do that at the Apple Store?
-
And let me get this straight - dear reader PennyO has been coming to this site for what - six, seven YEARS and has never read the NOTES? Color me truly boggled.
I both read and enjoy and am inspired by the notes, on the days I am on the board... however, as tech challenged as I am, I could not figure out how to read notes from the days I'm not here - untwist those panties, BK! Unboggle the frontal lobes...
-
Then I watched an episode of SUPERNATURAL from the 4th season Blu-ray set. I remembered that I still had four more episodes to go in that set, so I put on the last disc and started it. This was the one where Dean and Sam find out they have a half brother. I remembered very little about this episode, so the surprise twist near the end was a REAL surprise.
-
I did a two-mile jog and it is a beautiful day so that's nice. What's not nice is being able to be at home on my computer or watching a movie.
-
Well, now you know.
Well, I DID know once Jose told me how to access said blogs... I doubt if I'd remember a few days from now. Ah, the blessings of age...
-
And a happy dance AGAIN, for page 8!!!
-
I didn't know Panera had plugs, so if I have to come back, which I'm praying I don't, then I'll bring the power cord. So, if the iPhone battery needs to be replaced, do I do that at the Apple Store?
Yes, you can get your iPhone battery replaced. However, it doesn't really need to be done until the battery life is somewhere in the 30 minute range. If you got the Apple Care for it, the battery replacement is covered, otherwise, it will run you around $75. It can be a "walk-in" repair, but it's always best to call Apple Care in advance and set up a Genius Bar appointment.
*I'm still have my original iPhone battery.

Only three children showed up for the party and rehearsal. Tomorrow will be chaos. Hopefully everyone will think it's cute.
I can hope.
-
Well, phone is charged full and I guess I'll just go home and do nothing. I don't really feel like driving around aimlessly.
-
The last time we lost power, I pulled up a chair next to a window, got a book, and read all afternoon. We didn't get power back until long after the sun went down, but thankfully, I had plenty of candles.
-
Guess I'm going to head down now and sort through the closet looking for something decent to wear to the Christmas party tonight. Then, I'll start getting cleaned up for that.

A really good place to go, for a charge and free wireless internet, is a public library... up in the cabin, sometimes I'm days without electricity - a mere half-hour's drive, and I can be in the exquisitely appointed (our tax $$$ at work!!) Sultan Public Library. Free DVD's, too... and electric sockets abound where one can plug one's phone and laptop into the current...
-
Starbuck's is another great place to plug in and sign on...

EMPIRE OF THE ANTS - giants bugs AND Joan Collins and shady real estate dealings. What's NOT to love?
What a coinkydink! After I went to my bedroom last night, I turned on the TV for a bit and it was on the Nickelodeon channel. Every night, they show several episodes of "Roseanne" and the episode that just started is when Roseanne's estranged cousin comes to visit and the cousin...believe it or not...was played by Joan Collins! Her American accent was not very consistent. ;)

As expected, the Christmas party I was going to tonight was cancelled. Oh, well--I can wrap gifts while watching THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER on TCM.

Finished the Ozon movie - not sure what to think about it - it's really odd and there's something going on that I don't think is entirely clear. Reading various critics, it's VERY clear they don't have a clew. And hilariously they must have either all been fed the same press materials or before writing their various reviews they must have read other reviews and cadged from them - this is especially true of Stephen Holden's NY Times review of three days ago - he "borrowed " almost the entire review from other reviews, which reveals him to be the critically bankrupt fool he is. Five reviews said the exact same phrase "it starts out like a Dardenne brothers move" while many reviews used the exact same phrase "magical-realist" complete with hyphen, while several others used the exact same reference to David Lynch, David Cronenberg, etc. while yet three other reviews said the score occasionally had touches of Rosemary's Baby (completely and totally wrong and stupid).

There are only six or so "reviews" on the imdb and only one seems to be on the right track, I think. It's the only interpretation that sort of makes sense, but little about this movie makes sense, which, I believe, is part of the point.
-
Well, it's time for me to go to the theater and work the concessions counter.
Until later!
-
Listening to music now, and then I have several Blu-Rays to choose from, including something called Iron Monkey, the American Godzilla, which I've never seen, The Queen, or something called Easy Virtue, which I know is based on a Noel Coward play, but which I've never heard of (the film).
-
Has anyone else tried Ocean Spray's Cran-Raspberry Cranberry Sauce?
No, but sounds good!

I do, too - very cozy-looking.

I finished my Christmas shopping to day and got everything wrapped. That foesn't mean I won't find a little extra here or there but if Christmas was tomorrow I'd be ready. Whew!
-
DR Laura, I decided to take your advice...I didn't work at the office today. I didn't even clean out the desk. There is time to do that later. I do have a deadline Monday, but I can get it done on Monday
I did call my friend who invited me to a cookie exchange tomorrow - we do the dough ahead of time and bake the cookies at her house - and said I'd love to go. I'm going to make Jane's wonderful sour cream cookies. they were a huge hit at the office (the neighbors, workmen, Edith and I etc) So I'll make the dough in the morning and chill it until time to go.
-
Vixmom - I have some before photos, so when it's done I'll do a before and after
-
Vibes to allw ho need them
-
I'm glad you took some time off today, Cillaliz. Well, sorta.
-
LOL, it's time off from the office. It's been a nice day. The glass of wine at a friend's store didn't hurt any.
-
Uh-Oh... I hope that Greg is keeping an eye on things down in Atlanta for DR edisaurus:
No snow in Atlanta, but potential floods (http://www.ajc.com/news/no-snow-in-atlanta-244982.html)
*Charleston, SC, is has also been dealing with some record rainfall and potential flooding the past couple of days.
So far, so ...OK...
-
I hear snowplows! That's a first for me, I think!

DR Edi, sorry you are stranded, but there are worse places to be stranded than New York City at the Edison Hotel. Hope you make the best of it.
-
Party pics up on facebook, soon to be on photobucket, which means that they will arrive here shortly.
-
Lucky me, Peter's wife has the same size feet and has generously loaned me a pair of snowboots, so now I'll head to the Edison. No internet, but I may just wander around Broadway for awhile...

Decided to watch Godzilla, the new version - so far, in the first ten minutes they've managed to do several things wrong. It gives me little hope for the rest.

i didn't even think about that. i'm sure you appreciate having warm dry feet.
-
I love NYC in snow! I was there for New Year's Eve in either 77 or 78 and there was a massive snowstorm! We wandered around Central Park at night amazed.

Back from seeing Avatar - totally captivating; seeing in 3D is a must.

I hope Pixar can do as well with John Carter of Mars.

-
we don't have 3D here. how long is the movie? maybe next week i can sit through a movie.
-
i have two different anti-nausea meds so i can tolerate the pain meds. normally i would read up on meds before taking them, under the circumstances i didn't. neither did i read the extra flap on the prescription label that says may cause drowsiness. i'm going to try skipping the morning dose (i was taking one in the morning & one at night, alternating the 2). one at bedtime sounds better.
-
Before I left for the CHristmas party, I had time to watch another episode of THE MENTALIST. This was the one where Patrick quit the CBI because he was forbidden to help prove a man in jail was innocent. The man claimed to have information on Red John, and Patrick would do anything to get that information. I love how the team rallied around him.
-
Decided to watch Godzilla, the new version - so far, in the first ten minutes they've managed to do several things wrong. It gives me little hope for the rest.
It is a really terrible film.
-
The CHristmas party was quite festive and enjoyable, and I stayed exactly as long as I had planned and no longer. Nice to see some folks I hadn't seen in a while including a former student of mine with his lover. Of course, I had no idea he was gay when I taught him in 8th and 9th grade. I'm glad he has found someone who makes him happy.
-
When I got home, I watched a film I've been itching to revisit for a few weeks: THE THIN MAN. It takes place at Christmas, so it's perfectly appropriate for this time of year. It's such a great film that it's right for ANY time of year.
-
Since I didn't get any more review material in the mail today, I have decided I'll take another day off tomorrow. I plan to watch the big hit comedy of the summer THE HANGOVER on Blu-ray tomorrow.
-
Hmmm... the internet seems very quiet tonight, so I think I'll take myself downstairs and go to bed a bit earlier tonight than usual.
Good night!
-
The CHristmas party was quite festive and enjoyable,
:)

What a great evening! Charlotte met some of the band, all of the leads, Joshie, Rob Berman, and part of the ensemble. The show got me again tonight and I left the theatre all teary; it's a killer ending.
The snow is really falling so we subwayed to 86th Street and i walked her home, then walked back here. I have no idea how much has fallen so far but it's quite beautiful.
-
DR elmore, you're making me want to see Finian's for the third time!
-
Dan the Man - I don't think I can help you, but there is this about loutish audience behavior to tune of the very end of "Too Many Mornings"
Too many morons
Wasted and pretending they’re still at home.
How many morons
Are there still to come!
How much crap, can they be so immature?
So much crap, you would think you’re in a sewer
Though it’s crap, still you must endure
Silly folks who sing along,
Silly whistling as they clap,
Silly pests who use their phones,
With their candies to unwrap
-
is that a chocolate cake inside? thanks for the photos.:)

Thanks, Dr. Matt, for the reminder that "Thin Man" is great for the holiday. I just found "After the Thin Man," and "Easter Parade" and "Dancing Lady" among others, at Big Lots for $3 apiece.
Also, loved the lyrics for "Too Many Morons." I think I sit next to the lot whenever I go to the theater.
-
Thanks, John G!
-
I'm back from working concessions for two different shows at the same theater...and their respective intermissions happened at the same time. BUT, it wasn't too bad. There were three of us working and we all worked well together, so there were no scary moments or rude customers. Everyone was quite well behaved. :)
-
And now, it's time for Doctor Who!! ;D
-
Nice pics DR td.
-
thanks DR JANE - now I have that lovely thought as well!
-
THE CHILDREN'S HOUR arrived at my home today, but I haven't listened to it yet.
I did watch INGLORIOUS BASTERDS which was most entertaining. I enjoyed it very much. It really is quite clever in someways, and there are some outstanding performances in it.
-
I am heading to bed since tomorrow is a work day.
-
How violent is Inglorious?
-
JRand, have you read Ayn Rand's biography yet? I saw it today and am thinking about getting it
-
Finished watching the 1998 Godzilla - truly one of the worst movies of all time. It, in fact, makes the films of Ed Wood look like genius. One of the biggest wastes of money and celluloid ever.
-
How inglorious is violence? ;)
-
Time for me to get some sleep. Night all. Stay warm and dry wherever you are
-
Cranberries.
-
And Godzilla can kiss my ASS.

I think I'll take a shower in a little while.

Glad that your outing with your goddaughter was such a success, DR elmore3003!!
-
DR elmore - I'm glad that you and Charlotte had such a wonderful time tonight. -How long is she back for? Is she staying in NYC for her whole Christmas break?
-
Glad to hear that everyone's holiday "to-do" lists are coming to completion.
-
DR DAW - Are you up late? or up early?
-
DR JoseSPiano - both! Up now (after sleeping) to file my weekly unemployment claim - the only time you can get in online - and up again in a few hours to walk to the train station for church.
-
Glad to hear that everyone's holiday "to-do" lists are coming to completion.
Umm... Well... Uh.... :-\
*Although, my brother, Mike, did send out an email the other day explaining some of the presents he already bought his kids, and how some of them will be from "Uncle Jay, "Uncle Don" and "Uncle Jojo". -It's his way of cutting down on the number of toys in his house. ;)
-
Snow looks pretty in NY, at least in those photographs.
-
So... I had planned to head down to Virginia on Wednesday, but if that second storm ends up coming to fruition(?) on Wednesday, well... Hmm...
-
Hmmm.... Nicholas Harnoncourt has recorded Gershwin's Porgy & Bess... Using a very caucasian choir....
-
if that second storm ends up coming to fruition(?) on Wednesday
Yikes. Hadn't heard about that. :P
-
OK. Back to bed for an hour or two.

Happy 6000+ Posts, DAW!! ;D
