Title: THE AGE OF ANXIETY

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a little age and some anxiety, and now it is time for you to post until the anxious cows come home.

Good morning, all! I was up at 6 because I would like to finish Act One piano book of WHERE'S CHARLEY by 8:30 or so. I have to run down to Water Street, which is a horrid schlep, and pay my health insurance premium. I could not mail it last week because the Institute held up our payment a week and it's due tomorrow. Otherwise, i've been threatened with my insurance cut off for a year, and I've got another six months of life before I can look at Medicare. So, it's schlep or perish and I'm schlepping.

Following my adventures on the Lower East Side, I will stop by Toyland to check out the office, insure it's secure, and then head home to finish up the Act Two piano score.

Good morning

Hello!

I finished Act one! The score is a mess. Between Mathilde pincus and Don Walker, God alone knows what the original WHERE'S CHARLEY? sounded like. They have so screwed up the notes as well as the orchestration for the 1954 Music Theatre International edition: simplified reeds, left a score full of wrong notes. It's very maladroit.

Elmore - I always mean to ask you this -- how do you know that the scores are wrong?

It's a gift! Not to be flippant, I can spot a wrong note or notes in several parts, I can see when an instrument is playing something that should clearly be another reed part because it's in a peculiar register or out of its harmonic placement, and other evidence like musical practice at the time the score was written, orchestrator's styles, etc. We also have a sketch, full of wrong notes, that references instruments no longer in the parts, like clarinet 3, and cues for flutes where now there is only one flute. What is always vague, and it turns into guesswork is the question of missing instruments like guitar and harp that might have originally been there: how much of the piano part looks like it might have been a harp or celesta? In 1948 could there have been a guitar? KISS ME KATE in the same year had harp, guitar and piano in the pit.

I was up with an upset stomach most of the night.   I've got to go to work and do a 10:00 AM hearing, but will probably fill a box with work and bring it home fro the rest of the day.  There's nothing on the schedule today, so that will work fine.   The weather is going to hell in a handbasket tonight and we have a very busy day scheduled tomorrow, oh great.

All musical recreation/restoration depends on the taste and experience of the editor. While there was much to admire about John McGlinn's work, he never looked at all of the evidence and reached the correct conclusion. Instead, he read enough about the show's history to form an opinion on what the show should be for him, ignoring evidence that refuted his opinion, and made the restoration conform to his concept. That's a bit of a fraud, I think.

When you turn 50 you often get a reminder from AARP although some of the discounts don't kick in until later, for example, a motel in Michigan where I might be staying in August for a family reunion offers an AARP rate but you have to be a member AND be 62 or older for the discount.

People who are 55 or older can live at The Senior Village (on Long Island) where a friend of Anthony's lives (she's 88). I could have moved in 3 years ago.

DR John G, that is indeed correct. I don't remember the exact details but I think it had to do with orchestras and recording issues. There were a lot of pop things issued during the strike with choral backup for soloists and no instrumental accompaniment.

I learned one good thing and one bad thing at my insurance office:
THE GOOD:  When I turn 65 on 9/19, my premiums drop to $152 a month
THE BAD: I thought I was paid up through April and I'm not so I have to add $868 to my expenses this month to cough up thepayment along with the Internal Revenue payments and rent. Oy!

I was at that wonderful concert of MAGDALENA and I have the CD. What I  meant was t that that score should have been recorded with its original cast (Irra Petina, Dorothy Sarnoff, and John Raitt) in 1948 but the strike prevented it.

Well, that's depressing.

Try to look at it from a different perspective -- if you are in your 50s and taking an exercise class in a seniors center, chances are you will be the "star" of the class, presuming most of the class would be in their 70s and 80s.

As for the Topic of the Day...

-"Mass" - I'm sooo happy that Naxos preserved Marin Alsop's rendition with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and forces that I was very fortunate to experience Live at Carnegie Hall a few seasons ago.
-Candide in it's various incarnations and variations.
-"La Bonne Cuisine" song cycle. -Who knew recipes could be so musical? ;)
-"I Hate Music" song cycle.
-"Arias and Barcarolles" song cycle. I had a chance to play one of the piano parts (it's a duet accompaniment) with an opera company in DC many years ago. Challenging and moving.
-Some of the "Anniversaries" - Bernstein wrote various "tribute" pieces to various people (friends, composers, etc.) It's interesting to see how he interpreted them through his music.
-Trouble in Tahiti - The whole "There is a garden..." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXjfQa9Bka8) sequence destroys me every time. -And then I get picked up again by "What a movie!" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERujbf4Pd3w).

DR vixmom - You can actually prep the original stuff the night before. When I'm in an Irish Oatmeal Mode, I prepare four servings at once: 1 cup of oatmeal, 4 cups of water. I prep it the night before by bring the water to a boil, then adding the oatmeal. I then bring it back up to boil for a minute or two, then turn off the heat and let it sit until morning. You can then either heat it all up on the stove, or microwave individual portions. -You can also freeze it in Zip-Loc bags if you don't think you'll be eating all of it over the course of the next couple of days.

Classical:
Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring
Aaron Copland's Rodeo/Billy The Kid (I play these two recordings incessantly!)

COPLAND remains one of my favorite Sylvester Stallone films.  They took some liberties with Copland's life story, but it was better than neglecting this composing master.

:)

Stallone had a habit of redoing things his way.  Look what he did to the ASSASSINS movie.

D'oh!  Darn that DR Jose!

I've loved and adored Leonard Bernstein's MASS ever since I saw the first presentation on PBS back in the early 70s.  It is a wonderful piece of music and theatre.

However, for years I had an image in my mind of Bernstein composing this work, having been commissioned--no, that's too commercial a word--having been implored by Jacqueline Kennedy to compose an opus that was worthy of the opening of the Kennedy Center in D.C..  I imagined Bernstein struggling through his long held grief as he feverishly penned notes of music to paper, working long into the night, a framed photograph of the fallen president atop the piano, working, working, working though his tears until the piece was perfect and complete...

And then I learned that Bernstein pretty much lifted all the music from his aborted musical A PRAY BY BLECHT, which was to be a collaboration with Sondheim.

I wonder how Stephen Schwartz reacted when he learned where the music came from?

There may have beena few flops that might have been recorded. The most serious loss besides LOVE LIFE and WHERE'S CHARLEY? is the fantastic Villa-Lobos flop MAGDALENA.
But we did get a recording of it with Judy Kaye. Quite lush and lovely.

Are there any fans of "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (or, How I Flew From London to Paris in 25 Hours and 11 Minutes)" here?

The marvelous Ron Goodwin score (including the wonderful title song) has long been a favorite of mine.  It was issued on the 20th Century-Fox label back in 1965.

Today, Intrada (a CD label) has issued a 2-CD original soundtrack recording of the complete score in stereo from original scoring masters.  It's quite THE thrill for me.

Back from various and sundried doings.  I had a salad at the Studio Cafe.  Then I went to the mail place where I picked up some mail but no packages.  Since I was expecting an amazon package I asked twice and was twice told there was nothing for me.  I went home, went to amazon, and sure enough the package had been delivered an hour before my arrival.  I called the UPS Store and gave them a rather large piece of my mind, since they do this sort of thing way too much - just too damn lazy to actually check to see if I'm right.  So, I had to drive back there and get it, then did some banking, then went to the AT&T store, where I picked up my new 36 cell tower - this is something AT&T is giving its customers for free - and it supposedly boosts cell signal in the home.  Since I get lousy reception here it will be very helpful, if it works.  It's sitting there waiting for me to start it up, but to do so I have to shut down the modem and the router and then power it all up and that frightens me.  However, since it's early and I can get people on the phone, I guess now would be a good time to try it.

But if you meet a guy on a bridge your connection, or whatever it was, will be stronger. ;)

Yeah, right.

I went to work and went to my 10:00 hearing, which was really a 9:00 hearing and thanks to Ricky waking me up early, I got to work early and made it to the hearing, lol.   My client, however, didn't feel the need to go.

That doesn't sound good for your client.

I'm glad you are feeling better.

Not surprising for this guy.

Also something I ordered that I've been tracking at Fed Ex and is expected to arrive tomorrow.  Obviously I'm confused as to why the post office delivered it today.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I love "Trouble In Tahiti."  I just ordered THIS (http://www.amazon.com/Bernstein-Trouble-Tahiti-Symphonic-Dances/dp/B002MUQ9Z6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1299629941&sr=8-1) version that I never knew about, featuring baritone Rodney Gilfry and soprano Kim Criswell, our very own Elmore's close and personal friend!  I Love Kim Criswell!! ;D This recording also includes Bernstein's "Symphonic Dances" from West Side Story, apparently in the order that Bernstein preferred, not in show order.

Larry, have you heard it...or heard of it?

Topic of the Day:

Candide Overture
Glitter And Be Gay
Make Our Garden Grow
New York, New York
One Hundred Easy Ways
Some Other Time
Swing!
What's the Use (from Candide...I just love this music :D)
Wrong-Note Rag (when it's sung correctly...I've heard several recordings where the singers can't sing the "wrong" notes the way that they're written.  I hate that.)

I checked the recording out on Amazon. Both Kim and Rod Gilfry are good friends, so I will have to buy the recording.

As to the Symphonic Dances, I think the point is that the score for the dances in not in show order and the one reviewer was pissed that they weren't. I'm assuming the recording is of the symphonic Dances as they've always been recorded. The score sequence is this:
  Prologue
  Somewhere
  "I Have A Love"
  Scherzo from Act Two Ballet
  Mambo
  "Maria" cha-cha
  Cool
  Rumble
  Finale

That is very nice of him to say.  I have known Christian's family since I was a little kid.  His grandmother was one of the legends of Tacoma musicals in the 50s and 60s.  I first worked with his father in SOUND OF MUSIC in 1968  His dad has worked aa a performerfor all of his adult life.  Even when we have lost touch for periods of time, we have always reconnected eventually.  Even though I have been around his father, I never knew there was a Christian.  Then a few years ago, I was cast in an Agatha Christie play, and Christian was also cast in the show.  When he told me who his grandmother was AND then who his father was; I almost passed out.

I've been watching the most wonderful DVD about the dancer Jacques d'Amboise, whose biography I'm currently reading, The DVD has complete performances of three ballets, Balanchine's "Apollo," Jerome Robbins' "Afternoon of a Faun," and Lew Christensen's very funny "Filling Station," the ballet that made d'Amboise a star and sent him to Hollywood for SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS. There are also several Bell Telephone Hour performances of excerpts from "Swan Lake," "Nutcracker," and "Stars and Stripes."

The final section is a 2006 interview with d'Amboise who's about 72 years old at the time, about the dating age for DR MBarnum; it's quite moving.

Just finished watching Inside Job.  If this film does not finally get people to understand what has been going on in this country then this country deserves what it will most surely continue to get.  It is infuriating, nauseating, moving.  It will have you shaking your head, it will have you yelling out loud.  And anyone who thinks our dear president is doing one single thing about the problem other than keeping the staus quo, will learn otherwise.  They will either be alarmed by it, or ignore it.

I remember the debate here when the bailout happened - several of us were very opinionated that the bailout money would help only the rich, which it pretty much did.  And yet, there are those who will not see what's in front of them.  The taxpayers' money has gone into the pockets of people who did not need their stuffed pockets stuffed anymore.  There is only one place that something should have been stuffed and it wasn't their pockets and the stuffing should have been something a lot stronger than money.

I am now going to get a snack.  When will the sheep awaken and do something?  The government is run by the financial industry - if enough people quote Mr. Paddy Chayefsky and shout "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore," and then actually stand up and DO something about it - by the MILLIONS - only then will things change for the better.

Had a beautiful dinner on the River Walk this evening. The weather was in the low 80s with a breeze and it was just pleasant to sit outside with friends and watch the rest of the world drift by.

Dinner was a three-course pick-your-own deal. I had rabbit terrine with a beautiful salad, arugula with pickled radishes. I could have eaten the radishes all night. Then lamb provencale, followed by something called domino cake, which was largely pound cake, raspberry sauce and whipped cream. I could have eaten that all night, too.
