Title: PLAYBILLS
Post by: bk on July 20, 2013, 12:11:04 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of playbills, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently remembering all their early theater experiences, like Ciao, Ciao, Cowdie and The Unsinkable Brown Cow.

TOD: I don't remember my first Broadway show. We lived an hour from NYC by train, and my parents first started taking me when I was around 14. I definitely saw A Chorus Line several times, as well as Annie and the revival of The King and I, both of which opened in 1977. I saw Evita after it opened the next year. I remember treating each of these occasions as a near-religious experience, and poring over every word of the programs (including the ads) for weeks afterward.

I also remember attending the out-of-town tryout of Ballroom in Stratford, CT - that would have been 1977 or 1978. I loved it, and was so disappointed the the cast album came out missing some of the songs we had heard there. What a surprise and delight to discover them again, years later, when bk unearthed them on one of his "Lost in Boston" albums.

The first show I saw was a touring company of Fiddler On The Roof with Paul Lipson. The first shows I saw on Broadway were all in one weekend and I don't remember the order but they were Chicago (the original cast with the exception of Chita Rivera), The Magic Show (with one OC member Dale Soules) and Pippin with Michael Rupert in the title role

Good morning, all.

Last day of the heat wave?  I think it's supposed to top out at 90, not go above it.  I find that even when you may take refuge in the AC pretty much the whole time, you eventually need a break from it all.

Coffee!

Good morning, all!

I'm thinking about getting a ticket for an early showing of THE CONJURING and having a good ol' scary time. I'll see if any of the apartment building's ghosts want to come with me.

My first show was the national tour of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, around 1962, followed by the national tour of CAMELOT, at Cincinnati's Shubert Theatre. I saw many wonderful things there. All of my playbills and souvenir programs from 1962-1972 were destroyed in a fire in my family's home in late September 1972. Wish I had them.

Title: Re: PLAYBILLS
Post by: ChasSmith on July 20, 2013, 07:27:13 AM
As far as I know, this was the first musical I saw on stage, just after we'd moved from Ohio to Florida.  We'd just seen the movie the year before, and I was blown away at discovering what an incredible thing a musical was.  This stage production, as lacking as it might have been (who knows? -- but the auditorium, more like a convention center, was just horrible for that type of thing) reaffirmed the magic and was a life changer.

I haven't been able to figure out what my first play might have been.  Most likely a "Little Theatre" production in Fort Lauderdale, as opposed to anything professional.

Other early shows for which I have no playbill are an outer space rock musical of Titus Andronicus and Dracula, both at Actors Theatre of Louisville, and a tour of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers with Howard Keel and Jane Powell.

I still have the T-shirt from Andronicus, which means it's about 37 years ago. On it are the words "A pie fit for a space queen. In it you'll find your two murdering sons."

It's a miracle I even have that program - and not one, but two copies.  My grandmother took me, no one else went, and with all the stuff thrown out or otherwise lost over the years, I was just amazed when I found it.  There are a few other early ones I would kill to see now.

A DR yesterday mentioned the amusing tag-lines used for some of the vintage paperback books...here is my favorite. It is from the 1965 novel TERESA by Jan Lowell (aka Jan Englund, star of the 1957 drive-in film REFORM SCHOOL GIRL).

It reads" There were two kinds of love, innocent and wanton...Teresa never thought to choose between them."

Of all the shows I have seen through the years, the performers I'm most grateful to have seen were Anita Morris in "Nine" (not that the rest of the company were slouches), Twiggy and Tommy Tune in "My One and Only" (and I saw both of those shows on the same day), and Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin in "Sunday in the Park with George." I have mixed feelings about Patinkin's abilities nowadays, but in that performance and with Peters at his side, not to mention Sondheim's score and most every aspect of the production, something transcendent happened in the theater that day that remains evergreen.

Yes at least in the EST zone, GASLIGHT will be starting just as we begin ANGEL STREET onstage.  I enjoyed the film much more before I read the play....it is very BUSY with lots of additional stuff and characters....but I guess it was needed to "open it up" for the screen.

The English version with Diana Wynard is on the reverse side of many of the DVD's and it's a bit more faithful to the play, but still quite a slog.....

Hi Kate, you must have misunderstood my post. I have not interviewed anyone from GASLIGHT....although, there are some in that film who I would liked to have interviewed.

I saw James Stewart in HARVEY, too, when it toured to Ann Arbor about 1970.  It was an all-star cast that also include Helen Hayes.

You lucky people who saw him perform this on stage.

Belated greetings of the day to everyone!

It's been busyworld here for me. Just finished working and now and committed to seeing a production of Shrek, the Musical tonight. Anyone want to go in my place??  :D

No, I have to go. The man who directed my last show is playing the lead. But what I saw on the Tony's the year Shrek was nominated, made me want to run for the hills.

And oddly enough, right now, the only song that keeps running through my head is, "It's Not Easy being Green".  :P

I wish I had time to find my old playbills....

Missouri Breaks CD arrived!  The few minutes of it I heard in the car sounded fantastic.

(Car CD player's on the blink -- probably only for want of a cleaning disc.  But they're different for car players, and I've only found one which was made by Maxell, and it is somehow totally unavailable.)    (I mean:  totally  unavailable.)

Earlier today Keith showed me the tadpoles in the pond.  While walking down there I saw movement on the ground but didn't realize it had come from the little piece of bark, that is until Keith put his arm across me and blocked me from stepping on the little bitty frog.  Since I was oblivious I was about to step on the frog it is good Keith is strong but gentle.

The first actual "On Broadway" show that I saw was "Swinging On a Star: The Johnny Burke Musical."  It was fabulous!  I've only been to NYC once and we also saw Julie Andrews in "Victor/Victoria" and "Beauty and the Beast."  I went walking around one of the days and on my own, I bought a ticket from a woman standing in front of the theater that was showing "Robeson," starring Avery Brooks.  I bought her $40 4th row center ticket and had one of the most incredible theatrical experiences of my life.  I know I have some of the Playbills, but they're in boxes, so I can't get to them.

More than 15 or so years ago, a friend of mine asked if I wanted a small (probably 8x10x12 inch) box of Playbills that he got from someone that he knew.  I still have those.  I don't remember what all is in there, but it's filled with Playbills from the 60s and the 70s.  Some even had the ticket stub stapled to them...sadly, even by the time I got them, a lot of the staples were rusting.  I haven't looked at them in many years.  I don't know if I even went through the whole box to see what was there.  Someday (maybe as I bring things to my newly rented storage unit), I will. :D

Well, I have been home all day doing nothing but recording some video clips from Classic Arts Showcase up in my bedroom (where I don't have a computer).  With a few other things that I've recorded on my DVD burner, it's COMPLETELY FILLED UP!  I only have approximately 4 minutes of room left!  I need to burn some DVDs!  A couple of hours ago, my friend Margo asked if I wanted to see a local production of "Julius Caesar" that a mutual friend is in.  I do want to see it, so I said yes.  But the Capital Lakefair parade is going on at the same time and I thought that the play started at 7:00, but it started at 6:30, so there wasn't enough time to get there, find parking and hope that the parade is out of the way.  Instead, we're going to see a movie later tonight.  I wrote down a few choices and when she calls me, I'll let her know what movies are the ones I want to see and what times they are playing.

Today I mowed the yard this morning, then worked on the yard for 4 hours this afternoon.  While I was trimming a tree I noticed some storm damage at the top of a huge tree that I hadn't noticed before.  It's a big part of the tree that's broken off.  I also need to have another tree cut down and some others trimmed so I called the tree guy.  He's going to come Monday to give me an estimate

And my washing machine is in the process of dying.  It was the cheapest model and I got it 12 years ago, so it may be time to get a new one. It won't go into the cycle where it drains the tub without me playing with the dial for about 10 minutes.  I can finally get it to work, so I don't think it's the drain, or anything like that.  I think it's just time to get a new one

I did get all my laundry except the sheets and towels washed and dried. Went to a four-hour dinner tonight with Stephan Pyles cooking Italian food using local ingredients and Paula Lambert of the Dallas Mozzarella Company providing some sparkling commentary and a host of incredible cheeses. Too many wines (and they weren't reacting well to the yerba mate, so they went to waste) and way too much food for one sitting. But the conversation was great and the evening flowed by.

The Cuckoo's Calling madness continues unabated.  Signed copies, of which there aren't many, continue to go for no less that $2500 and the unsigned true firsts have now creeped up to no less than 1500 bucks, so I'm guessing those who didn't buy the two copies that were Buy It Now on eBay for a grand are now kicking themselves.
